Don has encyclopedic knowledge of all things tennis, and he dispenses it liberally. My racket needed restringing, so I made an appointment. Don measured my grip, asked me a few questions, and quickly determined the right string and tension for me. He also gave me a wrap to make my grip the right girth. Don is a cool dude ... in a unique way. He's an older fellow who probably doesn't have cable yet. There is no computer in this shop, and I highly doubt the dude has a Tracfone. On the other hand, and what's important, is that he knows his tennis, especially his rackets. If you ask him one simple question about a racket, his passion will take over and he will go on a rampage. I nod like I understand, but I'm always thinking about Dunkin' Donuts next door. Today, I left two rackets to be restrung. It took one hour and cost $27 per racket (plus tax). I walked the greenway across the street (review in near future). On a related note, I haven't played tennis for more than a year because I always had to get my racket restrung, which got annoying. But I love to play and a guy at the gym kept begging me to play because he's now obsessed with tennis. So, when I texted my friend to let him know I got my racket restrung, he wrote back saying he also got his racquet restrung. See what he did there (racket/racquet)? He will pay. I haven't played in more than a year, but the key to tennis is determination. That usually (not always) leads to a win. So I guess tennis is a lot like life. And life is about winning. I will never do business again at Don's Tennis after being a long time customer. I was buying a new racquet today using a $100 gift card I received for Christmas. After applying the gift card, the balance was paid using a card. Don asked me if I wanted the gift card back, I replied no since there was no balance. He cut it up and put in trash. After I left Don came after me and told me the gift card was declined. He accused me of trying to use a gift card that did not have any money on it. This gift card was never used since I was saving to buy a new racquet. Now I cannot get a replacement gift card because Don did not give me all of the pieces. I also got a refund for the racquet. Tennis channel on the small TV all day. Demo racquets available. Every racquet you could want is for sale here, as well as shoes, balls, bags, hoppers, string, grips, etc, etc. Don is there most days and provides some fast talking, but is genuine in his advice and feedback. Just went to Don's the other day to get my tennis racket re-strung. The store was pretty busy (right after work - 5ish), but Don somehow was still able to provide personal service as he always does. You pretty much can get everything Tennis in this store, and if Don doesn't have it, he will most likely order it for you if you want to wait for it. You can either drop your rackets off and come back later to pick them up - most of the time I only have one to string and I just wait for it while browsing at the new products, maybe hitting some with the makeshift hitting cage that Don has in the back of the store. Don is pretty old school so no credit/debit cards... just cash or check. I always make sure I make a pit stop at the ATM before I go and see Don. read more

I travel 20 miles to have Don and his team restring my racquets because I know 1. they don't cut corners, 2. they'll customize the stringing to how you play, and 3. they are very quick. Don has always took the time to talk with me and helped me in choosing the right racket, strings and tension for the style of tennis I play. I've trusted Don with every aspect of my tennis game for almost 30 years. My preference is Yonex and he's always had a good selection of new models and great sales on previous models. Don is like finding a great mechanic. For as long as he's in business, I'll keeping driving past a dozen other places where I could buy things. Some times I might pay a little more for something, but most times I get a good deal. I tend to go for some unique string colors and they've always been a talking point on the court. I enjoy sending people to Don's because he is a LEGEND of tennis in the Charlotte area. Racquets, grip tape, shoes, tennis bags, racquet accessories, apparel, tennis balls, multiple string types... he's got it. I only remember having one issue with a racquet being strung and it was my fault. Don offered to re-string the racquet at No Charge, but I insisted that I pay for my own mistake. Go see Don. I am a big fan. You can demo racquets for a few bucks a day. If you opt to buy a racquet, the demo fees get removed from the price of the racquet. You can also buy used racquets. Great way to get an expensive racquet on "sale". Don -- the owner -- is a "master" stringer. Worth the trip. read more

Some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced. I returned a demo racquet, and "Don" basically started yelling at me because it was 2 days late apparently. It was never communicated to me how long I could demo the racquet, and they had all of my contact information if it was that important. I bought a lot of rackets and supplies from Don's store close to 10 years. Last two weeks, I bought four tennis rackets, tennis strings, shoes, and supplies. One of his employee strung one of my racket incorrectly. Close to the center of the racket, he repeated weaving four crosses and repeated weaving three mains at the same location. This appeared to be intentional. How could anyone repeat weaving 4 crosses and 3 mains at the same spot without notice? I bought two same rackets, same strings, and same tensions. The other one was strung correctly. At the tennis court, I noticed that they both did not handle the ball the same way and had different stability. I didn't know why until I carefully compared the two and noticed that one racket was strung as I mentioned above. I called Don and mentioned the problem. He asked me to bring them back for him to take a look at. I brought them both to Don. He put a new string for free with a can of tennis (3) balls. However, I had wasted money for gas to drive to and from his store. I had wasted more than two hours on this. If this guy had strung my racket correctly, I could have spent money and time for something else. I like Don and have a lot of trust in him. He helped me select racket, string, and tension. He is a good business man. But I lose trust for the person that restrings my racket. Moving forward, I plan to go to Don's store again but will think carefully about the consequences before buying tennis string and let them restring. If you must restring your racket there, when you go and pick it up, you need to check your racket to make sure it is restrung correctly. There are many places in Charlotte area that do racket restring and they do better job than this guy at Don's store. read more
