Feeling the glass on other washers that were running verified what I suspected... they had hot water completely shut off and all were cold. Further, the washer (front load type) was set to use so little water that at no point was there any liquid visible and splashing, more like a light spray of water on the clothes and some of them came out of the dryer with spots of concentrated laundry detergent; that's how little water passed through them. I had to soak them in the tub to rinse out the detergent.
