It was my first time at Dono Sushi Cafe. I had no idea this place has been at this location for 20 years! They are celebrating their 20 years anniversary by offering 50% off all sushi and rolls. It's all day Happy Hour. We ordered Monkey Balls. It's deep fried spicy tuna with mushroom. It comes beautifully presented. It tasted pretty good but I cannot taste the tuna. The mushroom taste overpowered the tuna. All I can taste was the mushroom. It was still tasty nonetheless. We also had Rainbow roll and Salmon Lover roll. Both of these were delicious. My favorite was the Rainbow roll. I liked the assortment of raw fish on this roll. We ordered the Yellowtail roll under the regular rolls menu so we can compare and see the difference of a regular roll versus the premium rolls. The regular roll was a bit boring. I recommend skipping the regular rolls. All the sushi tasted fresh. Waitress was friendly. This place is nice and clean. There is plenty of parking since it is part of a large shopping center. I would come back to try other dishes. Their menu has wide selection of dishes other than sushi and rolls. read more

It's a great casual sushi spot, perfect for smaller groups/families. Here is what I recommend ordering when you visit: - Chirashi deluxe, $29.99: this is an AMAZING deal for a chirashi bowl in today's economy. It even has ikura and uni with the assorted sashimi in the bowl. Highly recommend for the price! - Salmon kama (collar), $8.99: this is a HUGE salmon collar portion for the price, and it's absolutely delicious. It takes a little longer for them to make, but is so worth it. - Spectrum roll and salmon lover roll: these are our 2 favorite rolls to order. Spectrum has albacore with crispy fried onions, and salmon lover has is... well, packed with salmon. Miso soup comes with all orders. Service is always extremely friendly and food comes out quickly. i called in to make sure if they had uni & sweet shrimp & the waitress said theres a new rule which is 2 pieces per person but when we get there the Chef changed the rule during our meal and says its 1 order per table, it seems they made this rule on the whim. So if i had more than 2 people at my table then we would have to share & split the 2 pieces amongst all of us like peasants? i asked the waitress and she confirmed yes we only get 2 pieces per table no matter how many people is at the table. i have never experienced this at a sushi place thats not AYCE not sure if this rule was only for us or its going to be like this but this made me extremely sad because we come here weekly. im really dissapointed. read more

Another hidden gem. Can't believer there are 2 AYCE sushi places in Chino. Dono Sushi in a welcoming spot for fresh sushi and Japanese comfort food. The menu features a great mix of traditional nigiri, sashimi, and creative specialty rolls, along with hot dishes like ramen and teriyaki. They are similar to Sake 2 Me sushi in that they ahve a discount on their rolls and sushi. However, the best part is that you can order a half roll and still get it 50% price. That's a better way to try many different flavors for a great deal! Top menu highlights include the Rainbow Roll, Tiger Roll, and Dragon Roll, which are not only flavorful but also beautifully presented. All are delicious. The sashimi is fresh and generously cut and the sushi tastes so frech. We got our order to go but can see how busy and popular it is here. The restaurant is clean and inviting, and the staff is attentive without being rushed. Portion sizes are satisfying, and prices are reasonable for the quality. Just driving by this place and looking for a place to have dinner. I saw the all day happy hour for 50% off. Almost sounds too good to be true. But it's true! Many things on the menu is really half off. (Maybe overpriced to start, but still 1/2 off). Every sushi roll is half off and it's basically 8 piece. It came with a bowl of miso soup. I have the salmon roll and the yellow tail roll. Since the price is so good I ordered another set of salmon roll to go. Place is not that big but enough to fit many customers. I applaud the one server girl who works so hard spinning between tables to serve everyone. I know they're probably understaff. I compliment her that she's doing a good job! Because they're understaff they closed on takeout. Understandable. The sushi roll itself was wrapped not tight. If anything it's the chef's fault. For the price I would come back again. read more

We stopped by Dono Sushi while at the plaza after seeing their 50% off deal on all sushi and rolls, plus all-day happy hour. It sounded like a great deal, so we decided to give it a try. It was around 2 PM on a Saturday, and the place was pretty quiet, with just a few tables taken. We ordered: Volcano Baked Roll - The roll was pretty small, even with the 50% discount. Unfortunately, the portion didn't feel like much, and the taste was just okay--not bad, but not memorable. I definitely wouldn't order it at full price. Kids Dinner Set - We got the teriyaki chicken, which came with French fries and nicely cut orange. The portion was decent, and my kid liked the teriyaki sauce so much that he ate a bowl of rice with it. However, the chicken itself was super dry and hard to eat. The fries and orange were fine, but the dry chicken was disappointing. Combo (2 Items) - We went with California rolls and mixed tempura. Both were very standard--nothing special, but nothing to complain about either. Overall, the 50% discount made the price reasonable for what we got, but I wouldn't pay full price given the taste and portion sizes. Damn. I've been going here the better part of 20 years and this might've been my last time eating here. The food has lost all flavor and taste. This includes everything we ate. From the knock of sriracha hot sauce to the garlic edamame to the 4 rolls my gf and I ordered. There was no flavor to anything! I liken it to convalescent home sushi... where all the food is tasteless as to not upset the elderly folks' stomachs. I don't know if it's the prep, the chef or if the owners are buying cheaper versions of what they used to buy. Either way, it doesn't matter. I probably won't be going back. My gf said the same thing. The sushi and all that we ordered had no flavor. It's a shame. ** UPDATE** The Day After... Well, me and my girlfriend have been ill overnight and into this morning. Love this place! The rolls are so fresh and the prices are amazing. It's always a hit or miss with my toddler when it comes to anything she'll eat, but paying $4.50 for a California roll is worth the risk (I'm always happy to finish what she won't). They offer a complimentary first bowl of miso soup, which is so rare these days. The service was impeccable, the two girls had a lot of tables, but they were nice and right on top of it. They helped each other out a lot, I can tell it's a real team effort. The chefs are always the same when I go, and the rolls are beautiful and tasty (my favorites are the autumn and chino). Everyone seems to know the staff - I saw at least two tables call them by name. I work in a restaurant, and it says a lot about ownership and staff to have that kind of consistent relationship. That alone made me want to come back. Ambiance was good, they had a couple tvs on, my daughter watched what seemed to be a nature channel. Overall - wonderful experience! read more

The restaurant was clean, and would have been inviting if not for the sushi chef who was noticeably upset to see us walk in. The menu was inexpensive, and had lots of options to pick from. Since it was late we kept our order simple. We did get miso soup along with our rolls. Unfortunately after receiving my simple salmon roll, I had to immediately send it back. The way that this role was made was just insane. It was not only falling apart but just completely mushed. As to not further annoy the chef, I declined to order anything else or a replacement. There's always a first for everything, right? Tonight I had my first experience where I got charged $2 extra for asking to change my spicy salmon roll to NON spicy salmon roll. They said because they put more salmon in it. Hmmm, okay. It's very bizarre to me, also they didn't notice me in advance. It's not about the $2, it's about the notification if you need to charge your customer extra. That's not cool at all. The food is mediocre, and took a while for our food to come, and there were only us and another table at the restaurant. Overall experience 3 out of 5. We have been to this place twice now and both times saw the same sushi chef interact horribly with clients and staff. On our visit he even argued with a client and had no problem telling him to buzz off (to put it nicely.) He is extremely unpleasant and ruins the experience completely. The servers are always polite, I feel sorry that they have to interact with this individual, he treats them like dirt and you can feel the tension in the air. Why is this man still employed by this business? It baffles me that he remains in place. The food is mediocre at best and definitely not good enough to deal with these shenanigans. The only reason we went a second time was because we were in the neighborhood and figured first time was a fluke but NOPE. Also what's up with this "50% deal"? They clearly inflate prices only to bring them to a moderate price and fool the client. This is extremely deceptive. Won't be returning ever again and certainly not to support this chef they continue to employ. Steer clear, there are far too many options to settle for this place. They get two stars for the nice servers otherwise it would be one star. read more

This place was FANTASTIC. And several of the rolls were 50% off! I thought that meant they were going to be tiny or the quality was going to be less than ideal, but everything was delicious and a normal size :) Also, the large Sapporo 22 oz is only $3.50 during happy hour, killer deal. Super nice staff as well. We got the albacore roll, sunset roll, Philadelphia roll, and the TNT roll - all of the fish tasted fresh. Came with a few friends that recommended this place for lunch today. Tried their bugolgi combination plate. Came with rice, salad, qyoza, and California roll. Also comes with miso soup. $14.99 not bad and they give you a good portion for the price! My friends got lunch 3 item combos and noticed how big the portion sizes were. Good stuff! I love coming here for sushi because of their selections. I'm picky with what sushi place I go to so I always have to read the menus to see what type of sushi they serve. I consider what's inside the rolls, outside, and the toppings. I also put into consideration the proportions and the price. This place met my expectations and became a go-to sushi spot I always return to whenever I'm in Chino Hills! Parking has never been a huge issue in this area as well. The parking lots have been pretty busy around dinner time before but after circling around, I eventually found a spot. I've only had difficulty finding this location because when I put it into my maps it doesn't take me to the parking lot directly in front of it and I would get lost trying to find the place but you'll get the hang of it. It's never been too packed inside whenever I went but there are always a decent amount of customers enjoying their time. read more

I have been coming to this restaurant on and off for many many years. Having moved to Hawaii I haven't gone in a few years. I was so happy that they are still in business. I was visiting family in Pomona and stopped by for dinner on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was packed but we were able to get seating fairly quickly. We all ordered the same item which is the salmon roll. It was delicious and tasted fresh. I could have eaten 2 plates of it. I tried the yakisoba but was way too sweet for my liking. In Hawaii we eat it more savory. We were also given miso soup which was extremely appreciated considering it was a cool evening. service was great and prompt. This restaurant is tucked behind the corner of Pot on Fire. We found it because Pot on Fire was closed and did not open till 5:15 pm. People were walking in and the ambiance seemed very casual and inviting, a place to have dinner with family or close friends, so we decided to switch dinner plans. We were instantly welcomed and assisted with questions about the menu. The restaurant owner was relaxed, but eager to assist her customers with prompt service. It was obvious that customer service was of top priority. The Tiger Roll and Monkey Balls were good and there was a wide selection of sushi roll specials. My husband and I ordered 1 lunch (3item) box for $20 miso soup and salad included. 1 viking roll and Monkey balls. When I tell u this was more than enough food for both of us I mean it. Monkey balls were hot and delicious they were bursting with flavor. Viking roll was amazing and huge. The lunch box was delicious. We been coming here for a while now first time they ever told me this! We tried chobap sushi and it was much better ! Place is brand new! As much as I love the food, I just cannot give Donna sushi a five star review. The reason why is because my husband and I have been going there just about every Thursday for almost 2 years. We have gotten to know the servers who are all very sweet ladies. There service is always excellent. However, there is one person that is completely distracting throughout our whole dining experience. That is one of the sushi chefs whose name is Alex. Every time we walk in everybody says hello except for him. OK, I can get over that for a while, but this has been going on for far too long. It's not that he's not friendly. He is outright mean. I have watched him interact with other employees. He talks down to them. He's rude to them. He's even yelled at one of the servers in front of the crowded restaurant which made her cry. I have had it with this guy. He's a complete jerk and should be removed from their restaurant by the owner. I hope the owner reads this because something needs to be done about this guy. read more
