I'm pretty picky about my hair, especially because I'm originally from Japan and I have a different hairstyle expectation that you usually cannot get at a U.S. hair salon. That's been said, if you have a typical Asian guy with hair traits like mine (thick & straight), I highly recommend you give it a try at this hidden gem in Monrovia. I cut my hair every 3-4 weeks, and I get a perm once a 3-4 months at Yumi's place. Yes, you read it right, I get a perm. I know getting men's perm is not common in the U.S, but the truth is it's such an undervalued thing here because permed hair is incredibly easy to manage, which is usually not the case for a typical thick straight Asian guy hair. Additionally, Yumi's place has very low covid risk as it's an individually owned salon, and the only person you meet in person is Yumi. She is very careful about maintaining covid sanitization and I feel safe each time I go there. Instead, she recommended a hair product for cover up from the Style Edit (which she is not sponsored by, does not have a partnership with, & does not sell at her salon. I purchased through Amazon without her giving me a direct link) I've been using that and I'm obsessed! I got to save my coin and I appreciated her honesty. Yvonne is the only person I'd let handle my color! From going from a typical dark-haired Filipino guy to a balanced and toned blond, I trust her completely with the rigorous process of bleaching to get me the color I want. While I've been seeing her for the past few years, and she's walked me through some amazing and fun color adventures (all of which stem from her amazing skill to melt colors), the year of Covid has had me running to her for some comfort... Who doesn't want to maintain a playful style to make you feel good when things are kind of wild around us?? I saw her first in June, when salons were finally allowed to re-open, and then again in July just before they had to pause operations again. Finally, I went back in today for a bleaching retouch - you can only imagine the growth of my dark roots! Like every visit before during 2020, the salon's and Yvonne's standards of practice were excellent. I felt safe, the salon was clean (with constant thorough sanitization), and with minimized occupancy, there was plenty of space to keep me and the other client at ease. This would be community members from South Pas, Pasadena, and ESPECIALLY Sierra Madre. They leave their bikes everywhere, they take over any and every space they are trying to occupy and are rude beyond belief. They've taken what is their hobby and are using it to try and ruin what someone does for a living. Lien and other businesses have asked them to stop blocking their business doors resting all their bikes on them. Apparently this is too big of an ask for them. The photos below were taken on a Saturday at 8:30am and this was just the FIRST of many bikes to be stacked blocking her business. Find a new city to bike in, or stop harassing women who are running their businesses and supporting their family. This is your hobby, but this is her career. Also - please remember that these men are NOT customers of the salon, but are instead making it hard for actual customers to get inside the business.
