I'm a happy loyal customer since June 2019. It's been almost 2.5 years since I moved to LA from SF. I have to say that the quality of hair cut & perm you get here is amazing and consistent every single time which I feel very grateful for. I'm pretty picky about my hair, especially because I'm originally from Japan and I have a different hairstyle expectation that you usually cannot get at a U.S. hair salon. That's been said, if you have a typical Asian guy with hair traits like mine (thick & straight), I highly recommend you give it a try at this hidden gem in Monrovia. I cut my hair every 3-4 weeks, and I get a perm once a 3-4 months at Yumi's place. Yes, you read it right, I get a perm. I know getting men's perm is not common in the U.S, but the truth is it's such an undervalued thing here because permed hair is incredibly easy to manage, which is usually not the case for a typical thick straight Asian guy hair. Additionally, Yumi's place has very low covid risk as it's an individually owned salon, and the only person you meet in person is Yumi. She is very careful about maintaining covid sanitization and I feel safe each time I go there. If you have any questions regarding this review, hit me up and I'll happily answer you from my own experience. Happy 2022! read more

I've been searching a long time for a stylist who is able to cut and tame my frizzy, wavy, thick hair. And I can finally say that I don't have to look anymore because I found Yumi! I let her take full reign of my hair because I just didn't know what type of style would look good for the type of hair I have along with the shape of my head. But now I can finally feel confident walking out the studio and genuinely say that I love the cut! Yumi is so sweet and awesome. She makes you feel comfortable and has such a great positive energy and I love that! Also, if you ever need or treat yourself to a scalp treatment, she offers it as well. It is uhh-mazing! This was my first visit to Yumi after reading all the wonderful reviews. Before my visit, my hair was a very blunt straight cut. My ends were very dry and my bangs were overgrown. Yumi gave me a wonderful long layered cut as well as very fluffy fun bangs with some accent in the front layers of my hair. I love my haircut and it looks very cute when I curl/wave it (I have very fine straight hair). Yumi is also incredibly kind and lovely to speak to as well. If you're looking for a hair stylist, please go to her shop! I will definitely be coming back! read more

Yumi Ogawa - Haircut by Yumi! - Hair Stylists Near Me - Monrovia, California

Guys!! If you need a good haircut, please come to Yumi! First thing, privacy. She works in a single room by herself so it's not noisy at all!! Secondly, Yumi's skills is superb :D I explained what I wanted and she was able to meet my needs. I had experienced in the past where hair stylist either over cut or under cut my hair. I had to always make corrections myself when I went home....However don't need to do that with her! Lastly, she is fast! I hate sitting on the chair for a long time. The experience with her is beyond my expectation!! Guys out there, you won't be disappointed with your visit with Yumi! Thank you Yumi :) read more

Yumi is definitely one of the most skillful, meticulous and genuine hair stylists. Her salon is very welcoming and clean. I have recommended Yumi to my friends and family. Highly recommended! read more

This is an update review for Yumi and her newest location in Monrovia. I absolutely love her private studio she has now! I always thought it was so awkward when there are other people getting their hair done next to me but now she has a private studio and it is very top notch. There's also a whole lot of parking since it's in a shopping plaza. I can always trust Yumi to give me a haircut that suits me and she is extremely careful in making sure she knows what you want. Today I told Yumi to create a style in whatever way she wanted and I am extremely happy with my haircut! Yumi gave me the cutest short haircut I have ever had! Overall come here if you want to have the utmost professional hair stylist in town, private studio, and the kindest hair stylist I know. I will definitely be back again soon! read more

Finally got around to trimming my Covid hair because the "shapelessness" was driving my wife crazy. Haha! Yumi was super kind and patient. She took the time to really look over the mess on my head and cleaned it up nicely. :) If you're a dude with longer hair and you're looking for a stylist. Do not hesitate giving Yumi a visit for your next haircut. read more

I had a great experience getting a haircut from Yumi! She was super welcoming and easy to talk to, and I really liked the Japanese hair products she used on me. I got about 7 inches of hair cut off and I love how it turned out! She made me and my friend feel welcomed and pampered, and we're definitely going to her for haircuts from now on :) Thanks Yumi!! read more

Yumi is a very friendly and patient lady. The best private salon I have finally found in Greater LA area.

I have been coming here for the past few years to have my hair cut and occasionally splurge on the hair spa. Yumi is technically sound, and has great stylistic sense. She always leaves me with a style that is easy to manage. The hair spa is a smooth and relaxing head massage - a must try. She is also very friendly, which makes the experience that much enjoyable. Highly recommended. read more

Yumi is a fantastic hairstylist who always delivers results beyond expectations, and I've been going to her for 13 years. When I'd first moved from Japan to L.A. many years ago, I looked for a hair salon where I could get the equal quality of work that I used to get from the best-rated salons in Tokyo, and it took me nearly 8 years to finally find her. Today, I received a big curly hair, which looks sophisticated, very modern, and super cute! Her Monrovia studio is incredible with a chic private room and a vast parking lot. I strongly recommend her to anyone! read more

She is soooooo good! I am always impressed by her skills. She knows exactly what she has to do. She is also very kind :-) Thank you Yumi, I will be back!! read more

I have been going to Yumi-san for like 8 years. My mom is also a dedicated customer and goes to her every month for a haircut and sometimes for color or perm. The way Yumi-san cuts hair is wonderful because when it grows out, it grows out beautifully. It does not get awkwardly uneven where you have to get it fixed. I have received a cut, perm, and color from her several different times. I have been more than satisfied every time. I show her a picture of what I want, and she gives me exactly that. When I ask her her opinion, she gives it to me and it is really helpful, so that I do not end up with weird looking hair that does not match me. She is an expert at hair including what looks good and what does not look good based on face shape, ethnicity, hair thickness, etc. She is fun to talk to and I she is the one I go to when I want to get my hair done! read more

I wish I could give her double, triple, quadruple, etc of the highest rating on yelp because Yumi is the most professional hairstylist I've ever had in my 20 years. I'm very picky about my thick, wavy hair and I have particular Asian hairstyles that I like to match, but because of my hair type very few hairstylists are capable to work out good results. Yumi not only matches what I want, but she's THE only one I've met who understands design (which I've NEVER met any other hairstylist do); therefore providing advice for how/why my haircut would match with my face shape. She's definitely a professional with a knowledge that many "hairstylists" lack and has the skills to back it up. Plus she genuinely cares for her clients' happiness as well. I'm glad I got to meet her from Reem's Hair Atelier, and what's better now is that she has her own private studio! If you ever need a haircut, she's definitely trustable! Thanks Yumi!! read more

i've followed yumi to her new location! i have kinky asian hair - coarse with interesting cowlicks here and there. i trust yumi to make my hair manageable and healthy looking. with yumi, i've gotten my hair cut, permed, and straightened (the latter two on separate occasions, of course). i like that yumi listens to what i want, but also provides her own suggestions on what she thinks will look best. read more
