This place has been highly recommended to me years ago and even now, people still speak highly of the donair. I think they are known for the Halifax donair or at least it comes very close to it. I first tried the donair several years ago and remembered it as very big. Taste wise, it was ok. It used to be a bigger place with dine in area. Now it's half the size with only a take out window. We ordered the large rice platter with chicken. It came with a can of pop for $16.50. Portion was good, enough for 2 small eaters or two small meals. I was initially disappointed to see white rice as other places version were with dill or yellow spiced rice. But the white rice was not bland, it was very flavorful and went really well with the meat and sauces. I liked how we were given pieces of chicken which were nicely charred on the edges. Not dry at all. I will get the rice platter again. Maybe I'll give the donair another try in future. read more

Decided to pick up the rice plate for dinner, it was a weekend evening, the place was manned by 2 ladies. One of the female person was particularly chatty. I placed my order & requested no onion on all 3 rice plate order... she proceeded to as "why". I told her that I do not like onions. Then she proceeded to harp on me on why I don't like onions. I just told her I don't like it... the rice plate comes with a pop, I told her that we would like 3 Coke Zero to go with the meal. She decided to be funny & told me that she doesn't have any. I pointed out to her that the Coke Zero is on the top shelf, I can see it clearly. The next thing she did was ask me which plate is mine. Then she pretends to put onions on it (thinking it was really funny). By this time, I felt belittle & harass for not liking onion. I just kept quiet, didn't want her to spit on my food. The food was ok, it was not outstanding that I need to go back & be belittled for not liking onions. I will take my business elsewhere. I had lunch today at Donair Star. What caught my eye about them is that they have "Halifax" donairs. I'm originally from Nova Scotia so I thought I'd better check 'em out. I ordered a supreme donair with beef. With a pop, it came to just $8! It was delicious! The meat was thick and spiced nicely. The donair sauce was bang on. Donair Star deserves high praise for it's food and service. The portions are a good size and their "super"-sized offerings satisfy my necessity for extra meat. I typically go for the beef or lamb, but the chicken is equally as tasty. My favourite would be the Caribbean Beef which provides extra meat and adds jalapenos and tabouli to the mix. I don't understand how they can always provide service with a smile working so darn close to those "meat heaters". It's flippin' hot in that joint. In any case, they do and I respect them for it! Over the years, they have expanded to the neighbouring space to provide a seating area which will be great when things go back to "normal". I use to like Donair Star but last week I went to Zaaki on 6th street and it changed my life in regards to donairs. Compared to Donair Star it's like night and day. Today's Donair from Donair Star was flavourless, soggy and the meat was mushy like dog food. (I'm not exaggerating) Zaaki meat was fresh and juicy sliced in long strips with a char which adds flavour. Fresh hummus, taziki, tabbouleh, fresh lettuce, tomatoes and the best part for me is the hot peppers all toasted in a panini press. Donair Star toast their Donairs too but you can't tell, Zaaki has an actual crunch. I will drive the extra way to eat my Donairs at Zaaki. I will never ever eat an Donair from Donair Star again. read more

the falafel was great but the plate is definitely not worth the price. chicken was dry and needed salt and rice needed less water and cook time. We ordered two large platters (beef and chicken) through Skipthedishes Beef is typical gyro flavour. Chicken was okay. The rice has no herbs like normal platters from competitors. It was just steamed rice. No sauce on the salad either. Order coke online and you will get a Pepsi. Order a lemon lime, and you'll get a sprite (wasn't expecting that) That's about it. read more

Was looking for a quick and cheap dinner on a Tuesday after running some errands. A Yelp search brought this place up a when we arrived we could smell it's delicious flavours from across the street! I had the veggie Donair (Lebanese) and husband had the super with lamb and chicken. Portions were huge and prices were cheap. Great donair joint right by my place. The chicken is very flavourful, and the portions are large for what you're paying. It's mainly a grab and go kinda place, but there is a few tables next door if you feel like hanging around a bit. It's open for the most part of the day for lunch, dinner, and late night snacks, which makes it easy to avoid crowds at peak meal times. Been here a few times and their donairs are very good. The guys are friendly and they wash their hands between serving the customers. Just don't catch them during the hockey playoffs. This spot is a true gem in the neighborhood. Realistically speaking, there is no seating. There is a plastic table and chairs out front, but you're better off taking your food to go --- find a park or something. Ok, technical details: this donair is big and really messy. And not just 'oh, I have a little sauce on my cheek... cute!' -- this is 'bring your own napkins from home' level... and it's worth it. First and last time coming here. Decided to try out donair star based on the good reviews it had. But the food left little to be desired. The focus is on quantity over quality. Don't get me wrong the food wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. I ordered the mix donair with chicken and falafel. Boyfriend ordered the chicken platter. The chicken and sauces were lacking flavor. There was both tzatziki and hot sauce but the hot sauce barely had any kick and the tzatziki was bland and boring. Chicken is moist, lots of fresh veggies and loaded with sauce. For $5.50, ill keep coming back for more. Only suggestion i have is to make their hot sauce more spicy. Portions are huge and packed with tons of meat. Nicely spiced with veggies. My husband and I shared one combo star ($8) and were full. We packed our second one to go. The guy working there is nice. My husband found this hidden gem in the summer and we've been coming back frequently for take-out ever since. We always get the regular ($5.50) or super size ($6.50) chicken donair. Such a great value. The donairs are super filling and the ingredients are very fresh. I always ask for extra hot sauce. It can get quite busy during dinner time but there's never a long wait. Stumbled on this place when I first moved to New Westminster from Halifax. I was surprised to see they offer a Halifax Donair on the menu. However that first time I did not get it because the other items on the menu was calling my name. I ordered the Super Chicken, mainly because I wanted to say "Super Chicken". It was delicious. Full of flavour and filling. The baklavas are amazing too. I've been back several times. Sometimes just to have a baklava. I now live across the street and I get to smell the meat cooking all day long. The only thing I will say is that they do not server a "proper" Halifax Donair. That is why I only give them 4 stars out of 5. They have the meat and the sauce - both very good. But they do not prepare it the right way. There is particular way a true Halifax Donair is put together. So if you are from Halfiax and looking to satisfy the King of Donair craving, you might be disappointed. Other than the great taste of the donair, the portions are huge and the prices are great! They've got quality and quantity covered very well. The service is very friendly. Note: This isn't a sit-in kind of place. It's more of a order&go. There are 5-6 stools lined up against the wall with a small counter that you could use to eat your donair on the spot. The different sauces that where served as giant globs didn't look appealing, and the taste didn't do much for me either. I almost always get the medium rice plate. 8$ flat. comes with rice. your choice of chicken, beef, lamb or a combination of either. salad. the amazing white and garlic sauce and a pita bread. oh also a free can of pop with it. very generous portion size and it's super filling. but if you want for a dollar more you can get the large. just more of everything and but it comes with hummus as well. they also have regular donair wraps too if your not into rice plates and its all how you want it. add whatever you want or just ask for extra sauce or whatever it is you want. so yea amazing food. great portions and a price you can't beat! this is my go to! lol if you see me there say hi. read more

I have been coming here for 5 years. Giving this place 5 stars for the food and price alone. Not a great place for a first date or anything, but a fantastic place to just pickup a delicious Donair on a whim. Service is fast and friendly. The place may seem like a dodgy hole in the wall but the service pays excellent attention to hygiene. My favorite item is a Super Lamb Donair with extra sauce. read more
