Don Patron. I don't think people can comprehend just how good this place is - not until they've experience a meal from there. For almost 2 years now, my fiancé and I have frequented Don Patron at least once a month. This is the best Mexican food money can buy in the state and quite possibly this side of the country. Pictured below are just a couple of the meals I've had over the last few years. The burritos are all massive, so exciting. The portions are huge here. Most meals come with a side of rice and beans. This isn't your average rice though. This is the best rice I've ever eaten. They must cook it in chicken or beef broth - it's absolutely packed with flavor. I always ask for a side of Jalepeno, too. They grill the jalepeno and put Tajin (I think) on them. SO good! The fiancé (picky gal she is) has only ever ordered the Quesabirria tacos. When my lady likes something, SHE LIKES SOMETHING. She has tried Quesabirria at other places, and each time she is on the verge of tears because she claims "nothing even compares to Don Patron's Quesabirria". That is a direct quote. This is a restaurant I would gladly drive over an hour to get too, or even just wait in line in a cramped vestibule for 2 hours. It's that good. The staff are the cherry on top. Everyone is so incredibly nice. Most of them recognize my fiancé and I as we go so often! Handshakes and catching up on life is always part of our experience. This is my favorite restaurant in Michigan. It's quaint, but WOW does it have flavor. The best part, I rarely run into any lactose issues (as you all know, I'm severely intolerant of lactose). Thoughts on a Monday afternoon. Most booths taken - no big parties or tables taken. First thought: Why is this menu so complicated?! Horrible service: 3-4 Waitresses on staff. All working "alone". You have to ask for everything. Water. Straws. Napkins. Chips. Refills. With 3-4 waitresses walking around, why not work as a team?! Chips/Salsa/Cheese: Not house made/fresh. Just under a warmer. Food was okay, they ran out of Carnitas (Pork). I'd prefer to go to other Mexican establishments in the area. Birria tacos barely had any meat. When you watch workers walk over the same crumbled up napkin on the ground near the "bar"over and over, clearly no one cares or pays attention! Also, I found it odd that they didn't have a designated area for their personal waters. They just had it all over the bar counter. Very disappointing! read more

Terrible service and rude staff! I went here to pick up an order for a customer (delivery service) and the young man stated that the printer was broken....so it seemed like he didn't know the order. He wasn't being clear of what I needed to do as the delivery driver. I started to call the customer to get the order and clarify that their food was not ready when an older man came over with an attitude as if I was the one causing a problem. I do not control YOUR lack of a printer or getting a proper order from a customer for your food! As I further attempted to get the order from the customer, the older man started shooshing me...one thing I will not tolerate is rude staff at any establishment, I would NeVER spend my money here! read more

Went for lunch, had to tell the employees their sign was still showing closed. If I was a customer not meeting people I knew were already inside, I would have thought they were closed and left (no biggie) Waiter had no idea what a Gluten Free menu was so we asked him to ask a manager. I was told, "you just gotta look through the menu to see if you can find something". Normally, I would have walked out at that point. Was with friends so I stayed. I order the flautas. Per the picture in the menu, they come covered in verde sauce and cheese. Mine were dry (see photos). My friend ordered the #12 fajitas lunch, which was supposed to come with a fajita, taco and rice. She had to tell the waiter she was missing an item. He came back and said no, it just fajitas, taco.... Oh yeah ok I'll get you one. The fried ice cream was really good but they only had 1 left, no biggie. The waiter either had not been trained or was so shy he needs some more training to get out of his shell. And in today's world of food allergies, he should have been trained on what gluten allergies are. He was inexperienced on the menu, had to look at at it to see what we were ordering. He was nice for not being talkative but didn't ask to refill our drinks or bring more water when our glasses were more than half empty. Not a big deal. However, when you roll all of those little issues into 1 meal experience, we won't be back, I know good help is hard to find, but I didn't think it was that hard to find. We happened to be driving by on Memorial Day and noticed this new restaurant was open, so we thought we would give it a try. The menu is extensive! Many options, besides the ala carte items. My friend got the fajita burrito with chicken and it was massive! He took half of it home. I got the number one on the vegetarian combo section and it consisted of one bean burrito, one cheese enchilada and a side of rice. I also got a side of guacamole and that was really good. I enjoyed my meal too and ended up taking the cheese enchilada home. The chips and salsa were good and I also requested the hot salsa which was really good. It looked like it was going to be really hot, but it wasn't unbearable!! The waiter was really good and I heard him speaking Spanish to other customers, so if you know anybody that needs someone to translate, that is helpful to know. read more

So I've gone back several times after my last review because I found an item on the menu that I really like & its consistently good every time. Unfortunately, I don't think I want to come back. I dined in recently on a weekday with only 2 other tables filled but my waiter decided to just hand me the bill and a carry out container while I was just starting to eat my burrito. I thought that was so rude, especially because I was sitting alone, had my headphones in and wasn't bothering ANYONE. The customer service here has always been meh at best but I ignored it because the food was good and I usually order takeout so I don't have to deal with them too much. My experience last week just made me realize that I'm not okay with giving people my money when they don't even want me as a customer. I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt but that was unacceptable to me. read more

We were recommended to check out Don Patron's by my boyfriend's co worker who bragged about the place and said he and his wife go every week to 2 weeks...They have a huge menu, so give yourself time to look it over beforehand. We were greeted and seated right away when we came in and were given chips and salsa. They do have one of the better salsas, I like it when I visibly can see chunks of white onion and cilantro. It's definitely not the best, I think Mexico City has a better one and our all time favorite place is Los Galanes in Mexican Town, Detroit. My Birria tacos were decent and my rice was nice and fluffy, seasoned. I think I enjoyed more than the BF did. Again he has a high standard ever since I turned him onto my family's favorite place we've been going to for 25 years lol. We've gone here a few times and every time it's sooo good and we leave stuffed! I get the cheese steak burrito! At first I thought it was going to be like a Philly cheesesteak type deal but it's not! It's a burrito stuffed with rice, beans, steak, and onions and then covered in queso. I usually ask for sour cream everywhere I go but this burrito is great without it. How do I know? I order sour cream each time and it's forgotten each time. That brings me to the service. It leaves a bit to be desired. They seem to not come back too often after your food arrives. They are very friendly, however. The ambiance is nice. It's clean looking and clean smelling. Sometimes a little too clean because you can smell the cleaners they use. My wife and I have been here several times and actually went twice in the course of a weekend. All in all the service is usually good except for one time when we had a female waitress, and she wasn't as attentive as the guys that they have waiting tables. The Chimi torta appetizer is excellent. It has steak, shrimp and chicken in it and is a meal in itself. The chicken wings are good too. My wife loves the Biria tacos and the Patron burrito is fantastic! The margaritas and drinks are all delicious and they have Dos Equis Amber on tap which is hard to find. The shrimp and fish were very well seasoned but too salty for our taste. Even the rice and refried beans were very salty. Chips and salsa were good. We chose this place after calling two others where they said they had a 40 minute wait. We walked right in and were sat right away. We started with an appetizer of guacamole and even though it was tasty, none of us like tomatoes, and there was a ton in the guacamole. For dinner we ordered enchilada, tacos, and carnitas. All the entrees came with beans and rice, the food was tasty. We definitely want to come back for lunch... they have great prices for the lunch menu. Went and had dinner with a friend this past Wednesday at about 5 pm, and the place was pretty empty. The food was OK, and the waitress was somewhat attentive, but not all that friendly. Same with paying my bill, not getting any vibe that they would like me to come back. Not sure if the employees had some personal problems. We came here on a Saturday night around 8:30 PM and we got a table right away. They were not busy at that time. The service was quick. Husband ordered a margarita and enjoyed it. We got chips and salsa and they were very good. The chips tasted fresh and the salsa was a little spicy but tasted good. I ordered the chicken enchiladas with rice and beans and really enjoyed them. They were not soggy like some places and the rice and beans had good flavor. Husband ordered the Hawaiian burrito and also really enjoyed it. Waited a long time to try so they could get any glitches ironed out opening a new business. My experience was great. Glad I finally tried Don Patron. For those looking for an experience with streaming as they dine there are 3 large televisions. The mixed drinks (I.e. sangria & margaritas) are huge. Will be back again. Soon. The salsa could have been spicier, or at least have a spicy option. The restaurant is an old Pizza Hut and looks like it. Nothing bad to say but nothing special about it rather. My mom & I decided to try again after coming when they first opened to see if they made it through new business growing pains. The service has definitely improved & the staff was friendly. The food however while fresh was a bit bland. It lacked flavoring/spice that you usually expect from Mexican food. I'll start with service. The hostess began our dinner by sitting us at a dirty table. I could see the food and crud in the table from 4 feet away. I swept the crud and food onto the floor with my hand and then our server came by and wiped down the table. Not a good start at all. Our server was good, he was attentive and made sure we got our food. The food itself is another story. Chips and salsa, they only offer mild salsa. Usually places offer mild and hot. Not too big of a deal. My wife ordered a chicken burrito and a chicken enchilada. She said the enchilada was ok, nothing special, slightly bland. The chicken burrito... didn't taste right. I tried it after she asked me to taste it to see if I thought it tasted off too, and it did. Not sure if it was the chicken or the tomato type sauce they put on top but it didn't taste right. Had a strong after taste. I ordered a chimichanga which the menu described as being "deep fried to a gold brown". Not even close, it was nothing more than a very soggy burrito. Soggy to the point it was sticking to the plate. Absolutely nothing crispy or deep fried about it. To me, if an "authentic" Mexican restaurant can't even make a crispy, golden brown chimichanga then it's an epic fail. Disappointed is an understatement. Ambiance, well let's just say the floor was like walking on a sheet of ice. There is NO WAY that floor was cleaned recently or if it was, it was a quick run through with a dirty mop with dirty, greasy water. It's gross when you think about it. All in all, we won't be back. We will go back to the "tried and true" Mexican food establishments around town that have been around forever and have earned our patronage. read more

The restaurant either changed recipes since opening or the previous reviewers have non-functional taste buds. I loved it. My entree was the Burrito Azteca (shrimp, crab, rice, onions) topped with a cheese sauce. Very tastie and very generous with seafood. Portion was good for a fatass like me. Wife got the street taco sampler and daughter the shrimp chimichanga. Both were pleased. Left off one star because of no Tres leches on dessert menu.
