Hmm. Standard Mexican food. Not horrible. However: The service is really slow. The prices are really high. The space looks like an old Chinese restaurant that's been painted colorfully. As a native Southern Californian, surrounded by excellent Mexican Food all my life, I can safely say...this is the worst Mexican food I have ever had. The worst part was the chips and salsa. I actually would give the salsa 3 stars, but the chips? Yuck! They throw in fried flour 'chips' with the corn chips and the texture just throws everything off. Like a salty churro exploding in your mouth. Horrible. My cheese enchiladas were 'meh'. The enchilada sauce tasted like it came from a can, and the bean and cheese burritos my boys ate were not as good as those I make at home. Very disappointing. read more

I stumbled onto Don Luis Restaurant several years ago during the annual Cinco de Mayo block party on N 26th St. in Billings. Don Luis had a booth outside where they were serving steak tacos amongst other things. I was hooked from my first bite. I have been back to the restaurant several times since, bringing my wife or son. Each time we have been there has been a good experience. We have never had a complaint about the food or the service. Don Luis provides good food, a good atmosphere, reasonable prices, and generous portions. This restaurant is very popular locally, and can be quite busy for weekday lunch and weekend dinner. read more

Was passing through on the road trip from MD to WA. After eating burgers/steaks for the last several days, it was time for something different. Saw the good reviews this place had so I decided to check it out. And let me tell you - if you enjoy spicy food, this place is for you. From the salsa you get to the entree, the food here will set your mouth on FIRE! I ordered chimichanga's and my entree came with a side of rice and beans. Little did I know that the rice was over seasoned with pepper. And I mean to the point where they should change the description to say "black pepper with a hint of rice". And the price they charge to feed you lava? Ridiculous. Better find a Taco Bell, the food there would be better. read more

This place is probably actually worth 4 stars, but I am giving them 5 stars to counter the overall average which is too low. The food is a bit spicy, but full of wonderful flavour... they also give attention to the details, no one ever seasons their rice and yet these guys do. The service was great, the food tasted straight out of southern california, and I enjoyed my time. My favorite Mexican joint in Billings so far. The flavors and choices are great; we LOVE the decor and ambiance is spot on. I can't tell you how ecstatic I was to enjoy Mexican food, served and cooked by Latinos, with Mexican music playing in the background. We've been there twice -- the first time my husband and I split a taco dish (loved it), and this last time we tried the mole (which is very difficult to make well), and I liked it. The salsa is fantastic, and, yes, they have Mexican Coke. We celebrated my birthday there and they stuffed us full of food then brought an obscenely huge dessert that was fantastically wonderful. One of my sons is a burger fan and was immediately impressed that they call that part of the menu what they should: "American Food." He is really a burger snob who is annoyed whenever we take him to a Mexican restaurant .... Don Luis burgers PASSED his discerning palate. This is great news, because I can't wait to go back. I am very thankful for Don Luis. I adore Mexican food, and we really love this place. I do wish they had their liquor license, but understand why they don't; next time we'll break down and try their wine-a-rita. read more

The quality of the food is absolutely fantastic. Regardless of the iceberg lettuce at the beginning, everything seemed to be be quite good. I had the shrimp scampi that had very much a different twist on Mexican Cuisine. However, the spice and acidity proved to meet at the palette at the same time. All was good. read more

Based on my one visit, I'd say this place is awesome. I had the carne asada, and the portions were enourmous, food very very flavorful. In my experience, carne asada is always cooked very well, but they made mine medium, and did a great job of it - not easy with those thinner cuts of meat, I know. Rice and beans were fantastic. Food is a little pricey for sure, but I thought the quality and portions were spot on. Only issue I had were that the corn tortillas were oily(?) - didn't effect the flavor, but there were messy to handle. I would and will definitely go back to this place. read more

I always order their seafood enchilada meal, which consists of two enchiladas served with rice and beans. I'm completely hooked on the enchiladas--big lumps of rich crab meat and shrimp, all filled AND topped with cream sauce and cheese. My only problem is that I tend to gorge on chips and salsa, so I never can eat much of my meal while I'm there. I went to this place based on post from Facebook, they say it is the best Mexican food in billings. Well I lived in Elko Nevada where there is a large Hispanic population who run several Mexican restaurants and the worst run down dive in Elko is still better the this place. I was so excited to try good Mexican food and I was very let down. The salsa was watery tomatoes with cilantro, horrible!! The prices were insanely high, I paid $13 for a shrimp and mushroom dish In Elko that was so damn good I dream about it, they want $26 for a shrimp mushroom dish at this place. The margarita was the worst I had because they don't have a liquor license and have to make margaritas with wine, not a good combo at all!!! Our bill for 3 people to have a simple dinner, 2 enchilada plates and Indian taco plate and 1 margarita was $65!!! save your money go to Taco Bell. read more

Taquitos on dinner menu are indescribable. Amazing enchiladas, esp the Spinach Enchilada (order with a fried egg on top). Best Mexican food in the state, maybe the West! Great atmosphere, service, fresh ingredients, could eat there every day and never get tired of it. read more

I don't know what's going on with these five star reviews. I had a feeling that Billings was not going to be Mecca for authentic Mexican food, but this experience was thoroughly disappointing. First, the food is overpriced - two enchiladas combo was about 17 bucks out the door. I'd be OK with this except this is the most bland Mexican food I have ever had. I was here years ago and was so excited to come back, my excitement was short lived. Service: not great, not aweful... had to flag down the waitress every time we needed something even though we were the only ones there. Food: worst I ever had. Carne asada had a lot fat, salt was the only flavor, and they messed up my order in 3 different ways. Beans and rice crunchy, dry and stale, way overdone. Tortillas were soggy and floppy, and it was apparent that they heated them in a microwave. For the quality of the food, extremely over priced. I had the Fajita Texanas. Great portion, great taste, a little on the "soupy" side as far as what the fajitas were sitting in,and enough for two even. Friendly staff, though she had to come back to my table roughly 10 minutes later to ask what I ordered because she forgot. The margarita on the rocks was pathetic. My girlfriend and I ordered chicken enchiladas dinners. It took 45minutes for our order to get to us when there was only one other couple dining there at the time. The chicken was dry and brown on the edges as if it had been pre-cooked and sitting out all day. We sent it back after one bite and went home hungry. We both became very I'll shortly after getting home and ended up tossing up what we had swallowed and more. I went to Albertsons for some pepto bismol which helped only a little. The service is fast and friendly. The food is so good with great flavors. They serve chips & salsa free. The salsa isn't too spicy, it's just right. I got a strawberry daiquiri and it was also so good. They play music that isn't too loud. It makes for a nice place to go on a date. read more

The service merits 1 star. I explicitly told the waiter that I was allergic to dairy, and that I wanted no cheese, sour cream, etc. My chicken mole arrived with a big lump of sour cream in it. I politely reminded the waiter that I can't consume dairy. He looked at me quite rudely and had a hissy fit as he took the plate back to the kitchen. The food was below average, and merits 2.5 stars. The fish fingers were way too salty and greasy. The chicken mole was bland and quite uninspiring. Additionally, my stomach rumbled and was in pain the rest of the evening. The food was amazing. Two days later, I'm still dreaming about fresh salsa with roasted red peppers and cilantro, and those amazingly perfect sauteed and seasoned vegetables. Even the refried beans were delicious. I ate every bit of food on my plate and still wanted more. I shared the veggie fajitas with a friend and still had leftovers. The price was well worth the quality. It would have been expensive if we hadn't shared, to be honest, but the portions are huge. The service is the only reason why this place doesn't get 5 stars. One waitress helping the entire restaurant, while another bald dude was pounding beers at the bar (apparently too busy to work). Our chips and salsa went unfilled for at least fifteen minutes, all while the bald dude drank an entire domestic beer with lime. read more

We ordered Chile Relleno's and I asked if it was made with poblano and she said yes but it was an aneheim with alot of seeds in it. I asked for it to be free of any sauce and it came smothered in a strange looking sauce she said was green chile. It came looking more like an omelet and not a traditional relleno. We ordered enchhiladas too and they were so smothered in sauce you could not see the difference between the taco, and enchilada way too much sauce. The only thing tasty were the refried beans as the rice was dry n crunchy. It was overly warm in there as well and the waitresses stand around picking their teeth. Mexican resturaunts normally don't have good Mexican food. This place was an exception! I had the pastor taco special which had grilled pineapple salsa in it and it was really good.
