This place is kinda like subway, with some things better than subway and some things worse. I'd say there is less selection than subway, but if you're not into all the veggie options, this is a cool place to check out. Especially if you like sandwiches. So you start off by selecting the protein/type of sandwich you want. I got the green goddess one because it was the special of the day and less than $5 USD. I love a good veggie sandwich and this one wasn't bad. It came with avocado and cream cheese and your choice of vegetables like lettuce, tomato, cucumber, banana peppers, sprouts, onions and pickles. They have some sauces too. All on top either white, wheat or rye. I kinda wish they'd let you add other cheeses to this sandwich because in hindsight idk if it was really a deal compared to the other specials of the day. And while the cream cheese is nice for its soft and creamy texture, I was thinking some sharp cheddar really would have added something great to my sandwich. But alas, I'm a cheapskate and won't pay extra for cheese. My sandwich was nicely pressed and packaged in a paper bag. I like that they offer interesting soups, salads and smoothies. I was pretty tempted to get a smoothie too, but I ended up getting a drink elsewhere. The girls behind the counter did well. They were nice and efficient. They were patient and spoke patiently with all of us.

I regretted tipping. Lesson learned - never tip before completing a meal and having the full experience. We waited about 20 mins for coffee. When we followed up, she said "it's coming"; and went about standing there doing nothing. This is insane. Food wasn't great but at least the bread and veggies were fresh. Coffee sucked. Sadly, we threw it away. It felt like the leftover at the end of a brewing pot when we paid for and expected a luscious latte. Not going back. Not a nice vibe. Sad.

I finally made my way to this tiny, unassuming bakery, beside a 7-11, and was mesmerized by all the baked goods behind the counter and on the shelves. I was tempted to buy one of everything as you can just tell the goodies are freshly made and will be delicious! I went ahead and ordered the "Nonna's Special," which includes prosciutto crudo, calabrese salami, fresh mozzarella, tomato, pickled red onion, fig jam, arugula, EVOO, and balsamic vinegar. When the nice lady handed me my sandwich I was surprised at how huge it was and loved the fact it came warmed. (I love a hot sandwich!). When I got in the car and looked inside the sandwich bag, I saw the most glorious Italian-style sandwich I've ever seen. This seriously rivaled some of the greats I've had in my travels. And of course, as soon as I took a bite, it was over. Whatever plans I had went on hold as I savoured every bite of that delicious, monster sandwich (which I had to eat out of my car, as it's a dripper! But worth every drop!) The bun was super soft and not too thick, the meat was stacked and well spiced, the mozzarella, veggies, and condiments were perfectly matched for a very well-balanced and flavour-packed sandwich. I enjoyed it so much, I went back the next day and had it again! As much as I thought about gate keeping this little gem, I want them to succeed and give this place the kudos they deserve. Don't walk but run and get yourself a perfect sammie from Polene's! PS. The service is also top-knotch! Super friendly and helpful.
