Maillard Wood Fired Kitchen - We ordered a half Popeye and Olive Oil and half margarita pizza. Delightful!

If you like pizza, Maillard Wood Fired Kitchen in Elizabethtown is one you need to put on your…read morelist. I went with the Italian Meats pizza, and this thing was amazing. It comes loaded with pepperoni, Italian sausage, cappy ham, sopressata and ricotta, along with Romano and mozzarella. What really makes it different is the Neo-Neapolitan, wood-fired style. Their pizzas are cooked at extremely high temperatures, which gives the crust those dark, blistered spots you can see in the pictures. Those black spots aren't necessarily a burned pizza, that char is part of what gives wood-fired pizza its distinctive flavor and texture. Maillard even describes its food as being "kissed by fire." And LOOK AT THAT CHEESE PULL! The crust had a great combination of crispy, chewy and slightly charred, while the center stayed softer. Add all those Italian meats and the little pockets of creamy ricotta, and there was a ton of flavor in every bite. This definitely isn't your typical chain-store pizza. The menu is pretty impressive too. They have everything from a basic cheese or pepperoni pizza to combinations like The Great Debate, Sweet & Spicy, Greek Freak, The Bama, Garlic Confit and The Gus. There are also wood-fired wings, salads, cheese breads and several dipping sauces. So even if everyone at the table doesn't want the same kind of pizza, there are plenty of options. Another thing I really enjoyed was the atmosphere. It was peaceful and relaxing when we were there on a mid Thursday evening, it's one of those places where you can actually sit down, enjoy your food and have a conversation without feeling rushed. And the service was awesome. Friendly service can turn good food into a great experience, and they nailed both. One tip for somebody trying wood-fired pizza for the first time: don't judge that dark crust before you taste it. I know somebody is going to look at my picture and say, "They burnt your pizza!" Nope, that blistered char is one of the things that makes this style of pizza so good. Amazing pizza + peaceful atmosphere + awesome service = an easy from me. I'll definitely be back, although now I've got a problem: Do I order the Italian Meats again because it was that good, or try another one? Let me know what you ordered and if you felt this review was satisfactory. Enjoy your!

Great hold on the crust, great pull in the cheese. Lively atmosphere, too. Looking forward to returning for Wednesday bingo. Appreciate all the pepper options at the side bar.

Plenty of parking availability as it's in a strip mall. It took quite awhile to be seated even with the wait list spot but you do see a countdown which was helpful. Our waitress arrived and promptly took our drink orders. My husband asked about the two donut appetizers and decided since two donuts came with each, to order two sets of the blueberry with blueberry compote and one of the churro donuts with caramel glaze. Well, eventually our drinks came. A good 15 minutes and nothing. We asked our waitress about the appetizer & that we wanted it out well before the meals. She replied that "it might be, we just don't know!". No offer to go check or anything. The next minute, here comes a random staff member with three of our four meals. Mine was missing & no explanation. Waitress reappears and asks how the meals are, we note I don't have mine, & also we never got the ordered donuts to share. So as we sit waiting on my food, I implore the family to please go ahead and start eating without me. Here come the donuts, with no room on the table for them, & now small plates to share on with the cup of compote and cup of caramel. We asked 3 different staff members for a couple small plates. Each agreed to bring some. Never did. Our waitress reappeared after a long stretch & my husband insisted she take the donuts and take them off our bill since they arrived after 3 of our four meals. I did eventually get my meal, the rest of my family was halfway through theirs. Nothing was spectacular, pretty basic breakfast items but above even the pricepoint in most items at Wild Eggs in Louisville. My son liked the chicken & waffle but he liked that dish anywhere really. As if the poor service and awful timing on food prep & table delivery weren't bad enough, when we got to our vehicle I asked my husband if they'd for sure taken the donuts off. He said "good question because the bill was over $100!" . He looked and that had been taken off but the waitress had charged my husband's meal as individually priced a la cart items! Though he had ordered those items as a meal on the menu. He didn't want to go back in and deal with it so we left just knowing we will not recommend this place to anyone, nor will we return.

This past Saturday, October 24th, we stopped in for dinner as we often do. We were seated toward the back of the restaurant, which was a little disappointing at first, as we have always preferred one of the booths. However, what started as a slight disappointment turned into one of the most enjoyable dining experiences we've had in quite some time. Our server, Tyler, was absolutely delightful! He was courteous, attentive, and very knowledgeable about the restaurant's updated menu. He patiently answered our questions, offered helpful suggestions, and made us feel as though we were his only guests, despite having other tables to attend to,What made the evening particularly memorable was a conversation we had about the history of the building. When Tyler learned that we were planning to explore the downtown ghost trail after dinner, he took a few moments to share a fascinating story about the ghost of J.R. Neighbors. It was such a thoughtful, personal touch and something my husband and I continued talking about long after we left. I am not typically one to write restaurant reviews, but I believe exceptional service deserves recognition. It is refreshing to encounter a young gentleman who demonstrates such professionalism, kindness, and genuine hospitality. The food was wonderful, as it usually is, but Tyler's outstanding service is what truly made our evening special. We certainly look forward to returning, and I hope the management at J.R. Neighbors recognizes what a wonderful asset they have in this young man. A lovely evening all around!
