It was nothing like the smooth custard I expected from a Boston cream pie. I called the diner later to let them know because I wanted them to be aware that something seemed to be wrong with that batch. I wasn't looking for a refund or a replacement--I simply thought they should know. Unfortunately, the manager who answered did not identify himself, and when I asked for his name, instead of simply telling me, he asked who I was. When I told him I was a customer who was there earlier in the day, he then identified himself as Chris. I also found his response to my concern to be very unapologetic, which was disappointing. From a place that prides itself on its desserts, I honestly expected better. I'm hoping this was just a fluke with one batch, because I would hate to see a longtime favorite change for the worse. But since the new owners took over, I have noticed that there just doesn't seem to be the same consistency that I remember from the previous owners. Our server, Amy, was wonderful. Even though she was busy, she took time to talk with us about the menu and share some of her favorites. When we mentioned it was our first visit, she smiled and said the owner was working and would probably come say hello. Sure enough, he did. You could immediately tell this is someone who truly cares about his business. He had that sparkle in his eye while talking about the food, the ingredients, and the restaurant itself. You don't fake that kind of passion. It was obvious he is fully invested in every detail of the place. I know the restaurant business is hard, especially with so many chain options everywhere. Experiences like this remind me why supporting local businesses matters.
