I have heard amazing things about this place basically since moving to Pittsburgh so I was really excited to try it. Maybe it was good at some point or, maybe we had a really off day, but our experience was pretty subpar. Our server seemed like she had no idea what was going on and that she didn't want to be there that day. At one point, another server brought something over and my daughter asked "is our server new" and the other server said no, she had been there several years. So there was no excuse for not knowing answers to basic questions on menu items. None of our food was bad, but none of it was great, either. Everything was just OK. Not much flavor and pretty generic. Things like pancakes that you think couldn't get screwed up were boring and flavorless. Our last hope was the "famous" pies that our server told us about several times. When we asked about what flavors they had that day, she said she had to check (which seemed odd after telling us about them several times). Then she had to go back and check the flavors again because she forgot them. We did end up trying boston cream pie and dutch apple pie and they were both OK, but not anything that I couldn't find somewhere else. I love checking out mom and pop diners and drove an hour to check this one out. Should have stayed in bed. The visit started off with the rudest most miserable waitress hating life I had ever seen. The food was cold , nothing special . Basic breakfast food ok. My true horror was the restroom . The ladies room was out of order so I had to go to men's bathroom. This was a stop on 1/11/26 on the way back from a mid-state trip. It was a simple conversation with the wife and kids that we wanted to try something different than the typical franchise restaurant experience. Coincidently, I stopped here about twenty years ago and remembered the pies and everything was fairly good at that time. Now let's talk about this visit. At first everything seemed fairly normal, I like the nostalgia of the diner side of the restaurant. That's about it on the positive. We put the order in which was a little long with 4 kids and the waitress was nice with that part of the dinner. My order was completely put in al cart with everything, not a dinner and not a lunch, and guess which is the most expensive and didn't find that out until the bill came. I actually asked the questions before I ordered, but that fell on deaf ears? The first two items that came out were my daughter's salad and my potato salad. Her salad looked sad, I mean it looked like someone took some lettuce off of a couple burgers and a flat slice of tomato! The potato salad was not good in any way shape or form. It was like someone cut a boiled potato and then threw it in some mayonnaise and that's about it. I couldn't get a good flavor from the potato salad no matter how much pepper I put on it, and hot sauce didn't work either. We also got an appetizer of onion rings; I would compare the onion to the thickness of the ribbon in an old music cassette tape. When the rest of the food came out, it proved the side salad and the potato salad were a clue as what was to come! Quality, nor consistency were evident with any of our dishes. I got Hash browns with my fish sandwich or dinner, still don't known which I actually had because I got charged for both types of entrees. Again, it was like a boiled potato that was cut into sections and then some tiny square cubes or chips of peppers & onions were thrown in. The fish sandwich fell in line with the rest of the experience, but slice of onion stood out the most. Instead of putting slices of onion rings on the sandwich, I received two cut sections of an entire onion kind of like the consistency of a quarter inch of wood off the bottom on a Christmas tree. They were two flat disks of solid onion. The ham steak dinner my daughter received was about 1/4'' thick with a side of whatchamacallit hash browns, but she at least got more potatoes than me and I don't know if that good or bad? Another daughter got an egg & cheese omelet that was sent out of the kitchen with the cheese facing down on the plate. NOTE: Every omelet I've gotten in the past had the cheese on top, not upside down and stuck to the plate like epoxy. I stole some her food which I regretted. I think that's enough on the food, point made. Finally, when the check came something seemed off. I sat there doing the math mentally with a waitress hovering over me like a bee buzzing around a flower, add a couple impatient kids asking questions. I asked if I could get a pen just to check the math really quick, but instead I just got the waitress to pull the slip out of my hands and disappear in the back for 5 minutes... Why in the back kitchen and why five minutes? She popped back out and said yes it was approximately $10 over. I still wanted to go over the check myself, but at this point I was just so frustrated I thought it might be better just to pay and leave. I thought I'll just go over the receipt in the car, but to no avail. I got no receipt, no detail and noticed the change was incorrect too! I also tipped decent on top of all that, why, I have no clue?? I just went through mindless motions. Overall, I wanted to just take something positive from that experience, just something, just one thing, but nothing came to mind? As for the food, I felt bad because there is no way the quality can stay this way and the business be sustainable into the future for years to come. Empathy turned into frustration and anger when dealing with check, being overcharged with my entree order, then a $10+ mistake and having the slip literally pulled from my hands. No receipt and vague change? Have a nice day! Final thought! A big misconception with restaurant owners or staff is if the customer doesn't complain then everything must have been good or satisfactory with their experience. That belief is absolutely false because most of the time they don't complain or ask for the manager, etc. "They just don't come back" That is exactly what I would have done, but the check soured me even more to the point I'm writing this. It wasn't necessarily the dollar amount of the mistake or even how I was charged for the items; it was how it was handled afterwards and it doesn't cost much to print out a little slip. read more

What a disappointment. This place used to be a favorite stop for us. Classic diner: delicious food, fun, friendly atmosphere, pride what they produced. The original owners must be beside themselves with the lack of any care about what is coming out of the kitchen. I ordered two hot dogs and fries. One hot dog arrived on a piece of bread. I mentioned it to the waitress and she said she would grab a bun. Before she returned, I could tell why I had been given bread. The lone bun on my plate was so stale it crumbled in my hand. I just hope it wasn't the only bun left without mold or something like that. The hot dogs were yummy on their own. I could live with the hastily, poorly chopped onions. That was until I found the hair in my fries. I didn't have to wait long for my husband to finish his meal though. Scrambled eggs were brown and over cooked. Bacon was stiff as wood and overcooked. At least the homefries were only overcooked on one side. The other side was mushy. And when I say overcooked, I mean black as coal and peeling like a sunburn. So once he finished his toast, we left. But it's ok, they only charged us for drinks, his meal and one hot dog. So sad. I will miss going here. read more

Very cute old diner with enormous community cred. Unfortunately, the food is horrible. I had sausage gravy, biscuits and eggs over medium with a side of sausage, and my partner had the meatloaf sandwich. We were both incredibly disappointed at the quality of the food. I won't get into details, but we both agreed that it was a step above prison food and a step below elementary school cafeteria. I hear the homemade pies are excellent. I stopped here for the first time two weeks ago while having a nightmare of a work day, in the hopes that a decent pancake would make the day less of a nightmare. When I tell you these were the best pancakes I have ever had in my life...so fluffy, so thick, and easily the size of my head, for less than $5. Slow, slow, slow!! Stopped by for breakfast last Saturday, 7/27 around 11:25 am and won't be back. The breakfast rush had gone but it still took 45 mins for a simple breakfast of two eggs over medium. Two young ladies who ordered before me only received their meals (cheeseburger & fries) when I was nearly finished mine. We stopped at this "restaurant" on our way home from state college. We just barely beat a slight rush of folks, if you consider 3 groups of 2 a rush. It took over a half hour for several meals. We had nothing extravagant: grilled cheese, grilled ham and cheese, and two burgers. I use the word burger loosely. The "deluxe" burger was 2 smash patties on a 3 layer bun which came with coleslaw (we never received that), and fries. If you've ever bought frozen fries at the grocery store, then undercooked them, that's what you'll find here. We did hear that the pies were good, but we ended up cancelling that piece of our order. After 3 of the 4 at our table found hairs in our food, we lost our appetite. Our server was genuinely surprised when we didn't have a craving for hair pie after we alerted her to the hairs in our food. Definitely a classic. You come here for the low prices, 24 hour service, and old school diner setting. Obviously not fine dining. I had a hot roast beef sandwich. Good, mostly salty taste. Lots of gravy! Portions are commensurate with the price - most folks will be full, but you're probably not taking home appetizers. We were there for an early weeknight dinner but they were almost out of their well known pie already, so we had to order quickly and we're able to snag the last few pieces. I had the lemon meringue. I hate to say it but it was frankly pretty bad and looked much better than it tasted. The meringue and crust were decent, but the lemon curd filling was very unpleasant. I remember coming here as a kid and the food, the atmosphere, and the menu look exactly the same as they were decades ago. I may be biased as I have good memories of coming here with my grandma and mom and the meal I got here reminded me of some good times. I got the vegetable omelet and it is exactly how you'd expect an omelet from a classic diner. It was cooked pretty hard, but was enjoyable as they have a nice bit of tomatoes, peppers, and cheese. I added peppers and onions to the home fries and that did add a nice contrast. The potatoes could have been browned a bit more, but they were decent. We split a half order of biscuits and gravy and that was better than I expected. It's not the best I've had, but the sausage gravy was tasty without being too greasy or heavy. I tried some gravy fries and again, they tasted exactly how I expect diner fries to taste. Nobody in the group tried any pie, but it looked like they had a decent selection to choose from. One thing I really noticed was that the toast was buttered to the edges of the bread. It seems like that is a rare occurrence and I'm not sure how many people really care about that, but that's a small detail that I really appreciated. They do offer a wide array of lunch and dinner choices, but I do feel like the best bet is to go with breakfast. They serve it 24 hours a day. read more

This is your classic diner. Opened in the thirties, and probably updated twice. It was very early, we were seated promptly, and waited on quickly. Coffee and orange juice were both watered down. We had cinnamon French toast with sausage, and scrambled eggs with sausage gravy and biscuits. Everything looked homemade but lacked flavor. The plates weren't warm so everything cooled off rapidly. Traveled down the road & back again after watching that Golden Girls show in Indiana. Me and my sister noticed this diner as we travel down the road & said we must go & eat here after the show. Me and my sister ordered some cheese sticks as they looked excellent when we saw another customer ordered some & came to the table. I was over all impressed with the visual appeal now I just wondered about the taste & I was not at all disappointed crunchy golden brown melt in your mouth goodness. I also ordered the potato skins and they had the same quality in taste and texture offering up a wonderful blend of flavor that was very pleasing served hot & tasted every bit of succulent as my cheese sticks. After the apps. I had a craving for something sweet & took notice of the pie display which had a small yet wonderful selection of pies we all know and love from Apple to lemon meringue. I was really wanting cheesecake to compliment our theme for the night so we were out of luck and I went for the coconut pie. When we got our check we were shocked at what it was as it's cheaper then the average places we eat at & expect the bill to be a bit higher then listed. Outside of the food & service. I was also impressed with the staff taking pride working there as their grill & the rest of the cooking station was very clean and organized along with clean dining areas where we didn't have to wait for a server to bus a table so we can sit & eat. When we go and see shows at the Kovalchick Center we will make this our stop whether we're traveling down the road or back again. If we decide to have a party we'll invite everyone we knew to Dean's Diner. I stopped here for breakfast on my way through the area on 10/23/24 the food was ehhhhhh but the coffee was horrendous, one sip was enough and couldn't drink the rest. The waitress was matter of fac and not real sociable. When I told them the coffee was terrible all they said was hmmmm it's Maxwell House. They still charged me for the coffee anyways.
