Strawberry Crunch French Toast
Tiffany Y.

Bennie's 9 Diner is in the former Freedom Square Diner location. It is a casual restaurant that is family-owned by Ben, his wife, and children. The menu lists breakfast foods (e.g., avocado toast, chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, omelets, pancakes, waffles, and eggs Benedict) and lunch foods (e.g., salads, soups, and sandwiches). My husband and I ate brunch here on a busy Saturday morning, so we had to wait about 20 minutes for a table. The waitress spoke nicely with us, but she forgot to bring my orange juice. Here are my ratings for what we ate: Strawberry Crunch French Toast - 5 stars - French toast was topped with strawberry cream cheese, strawberries, whipped cream, and crunchy sprinkles. It tasted very sweet. Sausage Biscuits and Gravy - 3.5 stars - My husband ate most of this entree. He said that the gravy was "different" than what he was used to, but that he liked it. He described the biscuits as "good." Chopped Cheese Sandwich with Onion Rings - 4 stars - My husband ate this sandwich. He described the sandwich as "fine," and he said that he liked the inside ground beef but that it was messy and fall apart and made the bottom bun soggy. This sandwich also contained American cheese, onions, and lettuce. (No tomatoes at my husband's request.) The total price of these foods plus a Pepsi was $39 plus tax and tip.

Shrimp and grits with toasted English muffin

The old Freedom Square Diner has re-opened under new management as Bennie's 9 Diner. I came here with a friend for Saturday breakfast / brunch. Lots of different menu choices depending on what you are in the mood for, especially decadent waffles / pancakes for those with the sweet tooth. I got shrimp and grits which (IMO) tastes like the real deal you get down South. Very creamy, with plenty of heat and savory in the dish. My friend got The Classic Breakfast (eggs, meat, and potatoes combo) with a pancake. The pancake was huge, but he said the potatoes were better than the old place. Especially appreciate that this is a family business, with the 9 referring to the parents and their seven children (you'll see this theme painted on the walls inside). Great service too, highly recommend.

Strawberry French Toast

Yes! Yes! Yes! Bennie's 9 Diner is a great place for breakfast or lunch every day of the week. The coffee is delicious and a step up from other restaurants. The breakfast selections are varied and customizable. A variety of egg selections, breakfast meats including chorizo, the best bacon of any other restaurant, egg sandwiches and make your own omelette. Sweet selections including a variety of French Toast, pancakes, and waffles. Lunch selections are also varied. The side selections to the sandwiches are a delight and include French fries, sweet potato fries, and onion rings. Soups are delicious and a special shoutout to the stuffed pepper soup. The Shrimp and Grits is yummy and a big surprise. The milkshakes here are the best! They can be ordered anytime so just because it is breakfast that is no reason to miss out! You can get it to-go as well. The staff here is a joy! I have had much of the selections on the menu and it is good. A sampling of what I have had: classic breakfast, build your own omelette (add jalapeños for a real treat, and get applesauce to help with the spice), bacon, chorizo sausage, egg sandwich, Pecan French toast (includes bananas) strawberry French toast, chocolate pancakes, BLT sandwich, onion rings, sweet potato fries, standard fries, Shrimp and Grits, and of course coffee and milkshakes. Come here and enjoy the art on the wall as well!

Digging into our brunch

Nice work team. Visited for the holiday and using the join waitlist was great. Service was very attentive and up spirit. The food was so yummy! We were passing thru and will be back next time we are in the area. By the way we were so into our food we forgot to take a pre photo.

Since moving from Nj to PA, been trying to find a good diner. Well - found a great diner!! Compliments to the Chef, Manager, and Staff. Although entertaining a late breakfast/brunch yesterday, Saturday (2/10/26), the wait was very short since the staff was able to clear and clean tables immediately after a customer has concluded their meal and left all content. The scrumptious Shrimp and Grits was an excellent menu item. It was tasty, creamy, and the big portion was well prepared. The crispy Chicken and Waffle also a delight! The manager and server were also very cordial and on top of the refills of their awesome coffee. I will have to return and try their Eggs 'Bennie' Dict and Corned Beef Hash next time.

I hate rating this diner so low, since I used to frequent here a while ago (when it was branded Freedom Diner) with my dad, and then the food was amazing. When we ate here today, we were disappointed by how bland all of our food was. I ordered a mushroom burger, and there were barely any mushrooms, and my fries came unsalted. The coffee was generic as well. For the price they were charging, the food is not worth it at all. I feel terrible rating such a low review, because the waiters here have always been some of the sweetest and most caring in the area. What I really did not like, which solidified me never returning for a while, is the AI generated art they hang on the wall. Simply put, it just does not look nice, and with the amount of money they charge for the food, they are more than capable to commission a genuine artist. The murals on the wall look hand painted, so they definitely have the capacity to actually support artists rather than feeding a machine our water supply and poisoning the air from the towns that have to produce these inhumane data centers. Its such a shame, because I remember in the past when this franchise was Freedom Diner, they had the painting "Nighthawks" by Edward Hopper which me and my dad would admire and discuss the beauty and the contrast of the piece while we ate our meal. Now while we ate at Bennie's 9 Diner, we sat down making fun of the inconsistencies in the Ai generated painting. This is more than just about art, it is the experience you are taking away from guests as well. There is no human soul in anything AI generated, and nothing to admire about it.

Cheese grits and part of my husbands HUGE breakfast.

Service was slow and food so so. The French toast was soggy and corned beef lacked flavor. The wait staff however was pleasant.

The sausage and hash were also good but a little too salty and greasy. The inside fits the plaza so it felt less of a restaurant. My service was great and I even spoke to the new owner who shared with me that he was going to do a complete overhaul of the place. I think once the renovations occur, this place will be a good spot for a small town diner experience in a relatively busy town. I will be back to check out the new updates for sure but for now it's a little mah.

I ordered the Power Play omelette with mushrooms added and my wife got the bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich. The latter appeared to be a crowd favorite, since everyone around us was also enjoying a breakfast sandwich. The Power Play was quite possibly the best omelette that I have ever had. Now that could have been my rumbling stomach talking, but I don't think it is. This thing is huge, tasty, and stuffed with goodness. I ended up taking half of it home due to its heartiness. The only reason that I'm rating this 4-star is because of the price. Everything was $2-3 more than I think it should be, but I'm probably gonna pay it again soon just to verify the status of this omelette.

We had also heard good things about their Reuben sandwich from several locals. While the Reuben was good it seemed to be a little light on meat and a little heavy on cheese. All that to say, it was a good Reuben, just not the best I've ever had. I believe their corned beef is homemade and very flavorful and moist. Service was good, friendly, and attentive to us. Hard to believe we've been coming here since this place opened in 2003! Where did that time go?…read moreAnyway, we come here for special occasions like birthdays, and anniversaries annually. We've really never had a bad meal here. We've had a few meals that were better than others. Post Covid, the service has varied from visit to visit. They still have a nice little early happy hour from 4 PM to 6 PM with drink specials and some appetizers in the bar. They do have nightly specials that they tend to post online midday. In the first I would say 15 years of coming, we used to get a free birthday dessert if you were, I think a member of their club or whatever, but I know there were other times that they used to ask if you were celebrating anything special when you were seated and for an anniversary, they would give us a free glass of champagne or dessert to share or something like that. I made a reservation for our anniversary online in advance , and I even mentioned in the comment box that we were celebrating our 33rd anniversary, but this time no mention of it from staff, so we didn't bother to mention it either. It was the Friday before Labor Day weekend and so they do tend to get busy by 5 o'clock, and the bar is typically full by 5 o'clock for happy hour. They only had two bartenders on, one of which was taking care of the tables so bar service was a little bit slow. It took us a little bit of time to pay before heading out to the hostess stand to get our table. Once we were seated at our table, it was close to 10 minutes before a young male server came by. I attribute this to back to school time when they've lost a lot of their employees and then of course being a Friday before a holiday weekend a lot of people bail out on work too. It is still our favorite restaurant in the area though so I'm keeping my five star rating. My husband had the chicken marsala which was delicious. I had a 6 ounce fillet with broccoli as my side. I had asked for medium rare and it was actually quite rare, I could've sent it back and had it cooked a little more, but I just ate it rare & it still tasted fine. We'll return in a few months for a birthday meal I'm sure. It's an old school classy vibe place, but still very casual. Varied menu & I like their steaks and I feel although steak is quite expensive right now that there's is actually more reasonably priced than some of the other local restaurants. I believe it was $38 for the 6 ounce fillet that came with one side. I recommend their lemon drop martini at happy hour.
