Gower Made Bakery A…read morefew years ago, I brought my family to Gower Made Bakery to pick-up some locally baked goods. Upon entering the store, we were greeted by the owner. We were delighted to see that this bakery had many different dessert pies on display in their store. I asked the owner, "Where are these pies made? Are they made here?" The owner crudely and abruptly replied, "Are you here to buy or cause trouble? You can leave if you're not here to buy." I said, "I just want to know if the pies are made in your bakery. You have a really good selection." The owner stated, "Everything is made in the bakery. All items are made fresh daily." Thinking the owner was having a bad day and not wanting to disappoint my children, I bought two pies during this visit to Gower Made Bakery. Upon arriving at home, I was very disappointed to notice that both of my pies were made at a large bakery located in Ottawa. Why did the owner choose to lie to me? It wouldn't have in any way bothered me in the least to know that some products were made elsewhere at another bakery. Also, the pies I bought weren't very fresh. The crust was hard and tasted stale. I had purchased the pies and they were eaten the same day. Flipping over the box, I noticed the best before date was marked two days previous (earlier). That's when I instantly realized why the owner had taken my pies from the back of her shelf. Given the dishonesty, having to contend with a rude owner and selling me food products past their "best before" dates, my family and I won't be going back to this bakery again. While I was hoping to become a regular customer at Gower Made Bakery, they don't deserve any more of my business or me spending any more of my hard-earned money there. Given what happened, we have never gone back there and am not surprised to learn they are now closed.

I have waited to try this gem out for a long time and we finally made it out to Richmond on Sunday…read more The Richmond Village Bakeshop is only open Thursday to Sunday as they use the other days to buy ingredients and prep for the most delightful experience you're going to have. First off, the cafe / bakery is located in the quaint and cosy town of Richmond in Ottawa inside a historic hospital that has been converted to the bakeshop and owners home. As you enter, you're greeted by the most kind staff who make you feel welcome right away (bonus is that they are very kid friendly as well) We ordered the brunch special which was a raisin French toast, home fried, bacon and sausage along with tea and a butter tart. While the food here shares names with things you think you may see elsewhere, there is no comparison. It's next level. They baked the bread for the French toast in house and everything is meticulously prepared with real attention to detail. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed while the food quality is that of a fancy restaurant. On the way out, the owner gave out son a baked apple fritter that was so delicious. I give this place 5 solid stars for service, food and atmosphere! My only regret is not taking more photos - I will try to get some on my next visit which I assure you, there will be plenty of. Side note: we got a loaf of cheese bread on the way out and it was soooooooo good!

Really cool space, definitely would be great for an afternoon tea. They have an outdoor patio, not that it was being used despite the beautiful day. Pastries and food selection is great. The staff is friendly... but slow and easily distracted. The cashier was taking a phone order while several of us were waiting, pretty unacceptable when another staff member should be able to take a call. We ordered a coffee and a mimosa. Well, they had to go back and check to see if they had juice... they did not. I asked for just the bubbly instead, she had to go back and check again. How do they not know or keep things on their menu in stock? Oh well, they had the bubbly so it was okay. For food we ordered a pastry and a croissant sandwich. The biscotti and pastry were delicious. For some reason, they decided to panini press the croissant sandwich. What the heck, who would do that? Why didn't they ask? Tasty sandwich, but completely ruined due to crushing the croissant. We were expecting it to come straight out of the case and at most maybe microwaved to warm it, not just destroyed in a panini press. Cool vibes, nice atmosphere, food is good, tea menu looks amazing. But, the staff don't seem to have a clue to what they are doing.

The almond croissant was mediocre. After being warmed up by staff, it lost any flakey taste delicateness that it may have originally had. The pumpkin latte tasted like it was made with bitter, burnt espresso. There was a nice amount of foam and the aftertaste was milder and more palatable. I just moved to Canada and hoped this cafe, which is full of potential, would become my go to. I was disappointed, but plan to come back to give the lunch menu a try.

The only complaint I can think of is if you show up between 11:30am and 12:30pm, there is a good chance the line will be backed out the door. On this particular occasion I made it right around 11:30 am and I only had 4 people in front of me in line. The bakery is run by the same two people day in and day out, Rob and Anna. They can come off a bit standoffish at first but nothing could be further from the truth. Rob spoke to all 4 people ahead of me and even knew some of them by name and things going on in their lives. On this visit I had a cup of Chicken Gumbo and a Turkey Sandwich. The Gumbo was full of sausage and veggies and had a nice flavour to it. The sandwiches however really are the star of the show here as Chuck pointed out. The bread was so fresh it was still warm. And the turkey piled about 3 inches thick. I opted to add cheddar cheese for the bargain price of $0.50 bringing the price to $6 for the soup and sandwich. An unbelievable bargain! Not only would I recommend Riley's bakery but would consider it a necessary stop if you visit Cornwall. You won't be disappointed.

I have a soft spot for those in academia who leave for other pursuits ;) For some reason I know that rND stands for rue Notre Dame, but I forget the significance of this street to the bakery. Their location in Smiths Falls is not a retail store, but they do sell online and you can arrange for pick up at the location. They also deliver, and their products can be found at several health food stores such as Natural Food Pantry and Kardish. This bakery makes the best gluten-free bread and bagels in my opinion, but be advised that they do not taste like regular bread or bagels. They do not contain yeast and are very dense and textured. My husband calls it "twiggy hippie bread" implying that it tastes like it's made of twigs and is consumed by tree-hugging hippies. I do not disagree with his assessment, lol. It's not smooth Wonder Bread. It has texture and is chock-full of fibre. I love it for this very reason. I love their classic oat bagels. They are very versatile and can be used for both savoury and sweet meals. Their tomato and basil bagels and curry and onion buns are excellent for savoury sandwiches. Their cinnamon raisin bagels or bread loaves are excellent for a sweet snack. Their items are pricey. Bagels and buns are $7.50-8.50 for packs of 4 and loaves are $9-$10 each. Health Food stores may mark the items up further. Although, I sometimes get them on discount at the health food stores when they are nearing their best before date. They freeze well though, so I just pop them in the freezer. If you like breads that are dense, full of texture and high in fibre, I would definitely recommend rND products. I love them!!
