I was on an assignment in Alaska, I needed to obtain some conversational gifts for class I was teaching. I went to the Dollar Zone, found everything I needed. Thanks for displayed nicely. Prices were very clear. I need a little extra help finding something in the Clerk on duty did a great job. I walked out of there with several bags full of Fun things. Now I don't get to Alaska often but if I need to, that's my go to place. I highly recommend it for anything last minute and affordable. read more

I'm banking that they call it "Dollar Zone" because the sign is too short to put "Three or Four Dollar Zone" or "Most Everything is Over Two Dollars Zone". It's dark and dingy in here. Maybe they keep it dark so you don't notice how dingy it is? Maybe they only paid part of their electric bill (obviously I say in jest)? Maybe they're too cheap and lazy to replace burned out bulbs? I think we have a winner! The reason I go to a dollar store is because they usually beat the big box stores on price and convenience. These folks did neither. We've established the fact their prices suck and it's a pain to shop in the dark like it was moonlight 9-pin-no-tap at the local lanes. We ended up driving over to Sam Walton's place and spent the money there. A mop and some hot soapy water would also do wonders. I know there's got to be a long list of some minor repairs that looks like won't get done. I understand this isn't the ritziest section of Anchorage and that businesses won't be a golden palace. But this store goes way beyond a little distressed, making it a drag to visit. So we won't. I must say the young man with the long hair was most amusing and friendly. We enjoyed his story on the lack of tax in Anchorage and the cost of the shopping bags. He seemed lonely. We understand why. 07/22 read more

I was disappointed with pricing and quality of items. Way over priced. Hardly anything is $1 and if it is, it's garbage. I will buy from Walmart or Amazon before I go here again. Dingy, dark, and not that big of a store. Will never shop here again. I purchased a couple things that were priced wrong and didn't realize it till I got home. My opinion of this garbage heap hasn't changed much over the years; the only thing this location has going for it is- it's currently the biggest discount store in the Anchorage area. As such, this is the location where you may get lucky and score a deal. For the most part. Most items are priced similarly to department stores but are of lesser quality, especially when it comes to kitchen wares. They do have some bizarre-o and kitsch items that occasionally make it worth the trip. I find their party planning items such as disposable table cloths and SOME other large disposable party bowls to be appropriately priced. In general, avoid. read more

Mislabels prices and doesn't refund the difference in price after charge. Fraudulent business practices. Was charged 14.20 total. Ladle was labeled at 2.50 and charged 2.95. Mixing bowl was labeled at 2.75 and was charged 3.50 (bought 2 of these). Upon leaving the store, realized the discrepancy on the receipt (total of 0.45 + 2 x 0.75 = 1.95) and promptly went back into the store to request the refund. Staff refused to refund me actual money (only offered store credit but I have no intention of using it) , quoting the store policy. I believe this is illegal and a no refund policy should not be exempt from a fraudulent/scam labeling. It is fine to have mislabeled prices, employees make mistakes all the time. It is not fine to refuse immediate return or correction. Two dollars is not a lot of money, but the refusal of the staff to be able to accommodate their own mistakes and correct the situation reflects poorly on the business. If you take a look at the Alaska consumer protection act, with which you should be familiar as the owner of a retail establishment you'll see that "deceptive acts or practices in the conduct of trade or commerce are declared to be unlawful." (Sec. 45.50.471 a.). What I experienced today is exactly that, deceptive, and a scam. read more

Dollar Zone is fantastic for balloons and trinkets prior to an event. It seems they hire people with loads of experience on making balloon bouquets and tying together events. Prices are low as they get for Alaska and staff is friendly and knowledgeable. read more

It's Alaska, so even though it's a dollar store don't go in expecting to find anything good for a dollar. There are some decent things mostly in the $3-5 range. They have a lot of containers in different sizes and at much lower prices than major retailers. I'm guessing the employees deal with theft and counterfeit money a lot because when I gave the cashier a $20, she held it up to the light to make sure it was real. That hasn't happened to me in a long time, but I didn't take it personally. Otherwise the cashier and other store employees were nice. read more

This place is a joke I came in to buy something I asked the lady where is a specific item She goes it's in the back , looks at me up down and says you have to leave your purse by the door I was like excuse me ? I'm not leaving my purse by the door. There is a sign stating that they can check any bags ( purse, book back etc) .. but it never states to leave my bag . Never again. read more

I'm visiting from Bay Area and lady at the front was super friendly, I'm not sure what the other reviews were talking about or if the person was just having a bad day, but I she was really nice to me. Maybe it's because I too am a nice person? lol That could maybe have something to do with the nice service. Anyway, store had a decent selection. I have been in the store four times. The first three times were great. Very friendly young employees. It is a dollar store right? I know what to expect and find what I want. I'm not that high maintenance but my entire transaction today took place in almost complete silence. I brought my stuff to the counter. I said hello. The young man didn't answer but proceeded to ring up my items. I went to pay with my debit card and he said "ID" so I gave him my drivers license. He gave it back, he ran my debit card, gave me the receipt to sign, put my stuff in the bag, I said thank you and left. So to sum up the only thing he said to me during the entire transaction was ID. Granted I spent under $17 but really? He couldn't even say hello to me or thank you? I guess the loss of a customer who only comes in four times a year isn't that great of a loss. The only reason this place gets three stars is for the other times I was in there. read more

I'm not really one to do a review but I am a firm believer in giving credit when credit is due. Now let me say I appreciate when i walk into any business and feel welcomed. I shopped here at Dollar Zone plenty of times but I walked into the one on Benson and Minnesota and instantly was greeted and not in a routine way but with eye contact letting me know she ment it. I believe the employee was Monica. She was very good in helping create and choose the proper colors I needed for a party I was hosting. She was awesome. It was so busy there but she managed to acknowledge every customer while helping me at the same time. I was very impressed and want to thank her. Giving this place a 1 star rating because they don't do returns. I bought stuff for my baby shower not knowing how much I would need and when I tried to return the extra I had left over they wouldn't let me return it. Then they told me I only had 7 days to do an in store exchange. They also don't do in store credit. read more

I suppose you shouldn't expect much from a "dollar" store. And I agree with others, it is a bunch of junk. After all, I have my own junk so I know, ha. But I stopped in for something I needed for a craft. When I checked out, it came up with the wrong price. I was told they forgot to change the tag. When this has ever happened elsewhere, the price was honored. After all, it isn't my fault, duh, I am the customer for goodness sake!! The owner came out with a 'how can I "listen" to you' -not "help" you and she already had an attitude. I just said that I wanted to pay the price that was listed in the store. She said she could only do that on 2 of them and then I could put the rest back or decide to pay the higher price, which one would I like to do? You know what was more insulting? It was a dollar store (Dollar Zone) in Anchorage where nothing is a dollar, ha. In being so belittling, she lost a customer. Big deal. I know this may seem silly but in all the years I was in customer service, businesses cared and made it right. This place is amazing! The balloon arrangements and party supplies are top notch and they are so creative! Everyone is so friendly and helpful which is very refreshing. It's very convenient running in and getting some cold medicine or odds and ends and not have to fight the traffic. It is nice to have this compared to the big box stores. They watch you like a hawk! If you so much as touch something the wrong way, they will call you out and tell you that you HAVE to buy it because it's their "policy." My son was touching a toy cup when suddenly a worker tells me that I HAVE to buy it. I asked why and she said that he pretended to drink from the cup and "nobody wants to buy a germy cup." It's "germy" to start with! That's why we wash before using! AND it was extremely dusty so it was already dirty to start with! I come to dollar zone for almost every special event. I wanted to get balloons to make my brothers birthday special this week. Walking into the store I forget it is also graduation season and they are busy. A girl with brown hair and a lot of eye shadow gives me a very stressful greeting and tells me I can get balloons tonight and not tomorrow. That was fine. I walk through the store with my five year old and find some party supplies I'm excited about and head back to the balloon counter. The girl working the helium is still stressed while taking another customers order and is not being friendly at all. When it comes to be my turn before I can say anything she is yelling at my kid telling him not to touch a ballon that was part of a balloon arch that was placed in the middle of the store. She was ruthless telling him that is was $172 and she doesn't have anymore of those balloons. HE IS FIVE. When another employee asked if I wanted balloons I said absolutely not and a et the rest of the party supplies down and walked out. I called the store to ask for a manger and it turns out the rude girl working the helium was the manager and she was with a customer. I told her I would wait and she placed the phone down with out putting it on hold and continued to talk about me with the customer she was actually helping.
