The food options have changed and dwindled. The big department stores stay the same. TGIF Friday's is gone after many years. The one thing that seems to remain and allow parents some relaxation and the kids some fun is the play area. My son could spend hours here if I let him lol. He climbs, he walks, and he plays. There are comfy chairs and sofas to sit in. They have a charging station, and they have hand sanitizer!! The bathroom near the play area is family friendly and has a hard changing area. It would be nice if there was a lip there to ensure children didn't fall. The bathroom in the food courts is a whole different story. It is a FAMILY bathroom. There is no buckle on the changing table and the changing table tilts down. Perfect setting for a child to fall. The mall is light and vibrant in most spaces. It's a good place to just walk around and window shop. Mostly I miss all stores having dressing rooms.

As a tourist visiting for a weekend: having lived in Silver Lake (LA, CA) for a few years and…read morehaving walked around a bit and dined in this area (Fountain Square), I think it's safe to say that this is the or at least one of the hipster areas in the Circle City. The area feels artsy and very pedestrian/bike friendly. The restaurants look nice, but not overly expensive or unapproachable. It's funny because when I visit new cities, I tend to gravitate towards the restaurants in these type of areas. On this trip, I ate at both Milktooth and Bluebeard - both wonderful places to eat. I also had drinks at Four Finger Distillery and Inferno Room. It's located really close to the main downtown Indianapolis area. I actually parked in the area between here and the downtown area when I went to the Colts game on the Sunday I was here.

I take my foodie group to this area to dine out a lot. And you can take a nice walk around the area and admire the murals of this area. There are so many, gorgeous and from such talented artists. I often take a stroll before or after dinner to see the murals or peruse through the little shops. One of the big plus points had always been the free parking. Unfortunately it seems to be changing as I have ended up in a couple of paylots lately. I am not amused. So do yourself a favor and double check your parking spot to see if you need to pay.

Just a quick review on my experience at this hispanic indoor "mall" in Indy. I was cravaing ice…read morecream and we had some time to kill so I made my bf pull over to get ice cream at this random Yelp find about 5 minutes from where we were when I suddenly desired ice cream. Now... I took 8 years of Spanish but my brain went haywire and I couldn't say a single word of Spanish. That was a problem as everyone spoke Spanish. And not everyone spoke English. That's not a problem, of course. I should have been more prepared but my big dumb dumb brain failed me. There are at least two places to order ice cream inside. We got ice cream from the stand right by the entrance. That was the wrong one as I had wanted to try the stand with the unique flavors like corn and horchata. The one we went to had like a dozen basic flavors and milkshakes. Do a little bit of wandering inside if you want to find the stand with the unique flavors. There are dozens of other stalls inside, selling all sorts of stuff from cheap garbage to even dishwashers and hot tubs! We didn't see what the food trucks outside had. My bf got 2 scoops of ice cream ($5.50) and I panicked ordered a massive size of an oreo milkshake ($8.75 and 80000 calories). It was okay. Not as good as a DQ Blizzard which is top tier in the oreo mix em up game. Prices are barely on anything so make sure to brush up on your basic Spanish. As for the bathroom, it was messy, busy, and well worn. Also, parking was near impossible and potholes are abundant. Yikes. I am glad we tried this interesting experience, but I don't think I will ever go back.

I popped over here on Saturday to check it out; since many of my students had mentioned it to me…read more It's located on the west side, I honestly just browsed around and took in all the sights. There is something for everyone at this location, clothes, shoes, accessories, appliances! I'm glad I got the chance to check it out, I ended up purchasing an evil eye bracelet as well as an our lady of Guadalupe bracelet. I'd visit again, especially to check out the restaurant in the back!

In the 1960s and 70s, Southern Plaza was a go-to shopping destination for Indy's southsiders. It…read morewas a solid alternative to going all the way down to Greenwood Park Mall. These days? Southern Plaza is showing its age despite some efforts at renovation. There's an intriguing blending together of lifestyle shops, retail, and a few dining options, however, gone are the days when I would start wheeling at one end of the shopping center and keep shopping until I hit the other end. What's here now? Goodwill has a thrift store here along with one of their Excel Center spots (education). Oak Street Health is here along with ComDent Dental. There's a Great Clips and a couple other businesses dedicated to health and/or lifestyle. There's still a Kroger in a side outlot. There's an AMC Theatre on the backside of the shopping center that also has an IMAX. I would note it's an older theater and not particularly wheelchair friendly, however, I still make my way out here on occasion. Harbor Freight Tools is pretty cool. Dining options include El Azabache. There's a Steak n' Shake, Bert & Den's Grille, a Wing Street, and a couple other places. Dining in Southern Plaza used to be much nicer, though for the most part the nicer options have either gone under or departed. The good news here is that accessible parking is plentiful, curb cuts are great, and the overall sidewalk surface is relatively flat and easy for those with mobility impairments. This is open-air, of course, however, storefronts are pretty well protected. I don't stop in here nearly as much as I used to, though I'll still check it out when I'm around. I likely visit the movie theatre the most followed by Goodwill, Harbor Freight, and the Kroger. While Southern Plaza is no longer a destination shopping center, it's right by the highway and easily serves as a pretty decent neighborhood retail center with a strong variety of shopping and dining options.

I think this has gone down hill a bit over the years, but it still offers quite a bit…read more You can shop for your groceries at Kroger's, get clothes at various stores, get some tools too while you are at it. For me the best part is the food. From a Mexican and an Indian sit down restaurants, to your faster options like Pizza Hut & Wings to Qdoba, you can definitely fill up here. There is also a storage unit, in case you buy way too much stuff, haha. Around the corner is an AMC Imax theater, which I did not know, also belongs to the Southern Plaza Shopping Center.

There are more stores closed than open and the mall exterior needs some major TLC. There were very few patrons in the mall. It had a strange feel to it. There were more workers than shoppers. The mall does have some real hard workers that are very friendly in the stores, most of which are small and/or local business. I like to support local, but someone needs to take over management of the mall and put some money into it. I could not find a food court or bathroom while I was in there. The mall may have had them but I just could not find them. The mall has a reputation for being rough and unsafe. The area that it is in may not be the best, but I never felt in danger during my daytime visit. I don't think I would recommend going here just to shop around, but if you have a specific destination in the mall in mind, go for it.

I've been a resident of Indianapolis my entire life. I remember when Washington Square Mall was a…read moreSimon mall. I remember when it was a vibrant, busy mall with a unique design that made it a rather fun place to shop. While one could possibly argue it's always been one of the lesser malls in Indy, for many years it held its own and served Indy's Far-Eastside pretty well. I'd been to Washington Square maybe 3-4 years ago, partly because I wanted to visit the adjacent Target and partly because I was just a little bit curious about a mall that had a reputation for having gone way downhill. What did I find? It was clearly deteriorating, but it still had a little bit of charm to it. It was probably about half full with locally owned businesses, but you couldn't help but wonder if it had any hope of surviving. I was in the area today and wanted to do a little bit of wheeling for exercise. I figured "Why not check out the mall?" Oy vey. Washington Square Mall is officially a dump. I mean it. Seriously. There's officially no legit reason to ever go near it, despite the fact that a handful of national chains continue to keep their shops open including Target (though the entrance from the mall is now closed), Burlington Coat Factory (I'd check the coats for lice here), Bed, Bath & Beyond (It's more like Bed, Bath, & Be Careful), and Victoria's Secret (The Secret is shame and low self-esteem). I believe there may be a Dick's Sporting Goods in here, though it may have actually closed. Truthfully, it was hard to tell with the handful of customers who seemed to be more meandering about than actually shopping. The vast majority of the stores seem to either be variations of nail salons, hair styling, small gift shops, a handful of ethnic restaurants, and at least a couple churches including longtime mall establishment Movie Theater Church. There are at least a couple of entire wings that seem to be shut down, though in some cases it's simply true that the stores open for select hours such as evenings only or weekends only. Judging from the complete lack of customers, the notion of being open 40 hours a week here is kind of silly. While this mall has experienced crime, fairly regularly, the truth is I never actually felt unsafe except for one particularly unusual wing of the mall where almost everything was closed and people kept coming out of one particular spot. They didn't bother me. I didn't bother them. However, it's also worth noting that the lighting in the mall is haphazard at best, the automated doors are in disrepair, any notion of decor has gone way out the window (much worse than Eastgate before it finally closed), and, at the risk of coming off the wrong way, at least 2/3 of these stores gave off the kind of aura that made you think better than using a credit card because you weren't quite sure who would end up with the numbers. Unfair? Perhaps, but the vibe was undeniable. The truth is that I love dives. I live in a rough area. I'm not hesitant to go anywhere, but I truly can't fathom a reason I will now ever go back to this run down retail outlet that is in serious, and I'd dare say unsafe, disrepair from the parking lot to the hallways to a good majority of the stores. You know how you kind of laugh at the Segway riding, completely unarmed mall cops in other malls? At Washington Square, mall security is packin' (but actually rather friendly!). The Far Eastside seriously needs this mall to work or to give way to some sort of different retail outlet. As is? For the handful of stores you might like, it's worth driving out of your way to go to safer, cleaner, and more customer friendly locations in other parts of the city.
