We noticed that Salem had a public market and thought that would be a good way to get some local flavor and a good way to let the time pass up until the museum opened. This public market is not outside but instead inside a small building. Despite the size of the building there are a fair amount of local vendors that are in here. Some I really was impressed with. There was a guy that had us sample some of his homemade beef jerky that was very good, a plant vendor that sculpted air type plants into things making very cute dioramas with them. My favorite was a hand crafted soap vendor and I wound up buying several bars of soap from her. The fragrances were great and she made them very pleasing to the eye as well with fancy waves at one end on a bar of soap with hints of what looked like glitter. Very nice.
