The good: this is a relatively new store; it is larger, laid out better than the central Weed, CA store, and is better staffed and managed. The bad: Dollar General no sooner installed self-service checkout stands than they promptly closed them (according to staff) due to customer theft. Overall a great store with just a few things that bug me a bit. They've been closing way before the posted hours. It started off as a random thing and now it's happening more and more frequently. And when they close early is random so one day it'll be 10pm like normal and other days it 8pm. And it's not made clear. Very inconsistent and unreliable. It's totally fine if you want to change the operating hours just be CONSISTENT about it. Or just make a permanent change to hours. It's very frustrating when the posted hours say 10pm and they close at 8:00pm and youve scheduled your plans around them closing at 10. Especially if you aren't in the mood to drive into town. And for people who don't have a car or have unreliable transportation it must be even more frustrating. And in the past they close for maintenance / temporarily close which is fine. And totally understandable. It'd be very helpful if they posted a big yard sign in front of their driveway or something similar to visually notify people driving by they are temporarily closed. Just some form of visual notification at the beginning of their driveway would be wonderful. Because alot of people go to town and shop then swing by the dollar general on the way home. And you can't see the tiny sign they've placed in the door. So they look open.. and then you have to drive back to town to the dollar general in the city of weed. And it's an annoyance that could be avoided. Other than that great store. . I love having a store so close to lake shastina. That's the only reason I'm providing my constructive criticisms. Honestly, I must say, there is something about the kids who work here. They are the friendliest, most down-to-earth crew I have encountered in the area and it really makes me want to come more often. Their warm hello, or hola when you walk through the door is the best. I vote that everyone gets a raise! read more

This place is the absolute worst. Somehow, they never have milk. That's like the whole reason anyone would ever go to a store like this where all the shelves are too close together so only one person can be on any aisle at any one time. When they do have milk, it always expires in 5 days or less. You want to use the self check-out, but the employees won't let you. I've literally had several of them berate me for trying to use it saying it is putting them out of a job. Um, there's only ever 1 employee working the store at any one time anyway. They aren't going to fire you, genius. The employees berate you on a regular basis, actually. Remember the days when a customer was always right? Here, at the dollar general, the customer is always a punching bag. Take what happened the last time I was there as a good example: I wanted to use the self check-out, but there was a pool of water in front of it and cones around the pool so you couldn't use the self check-out. I guess the employees are getting creative about deliberately preventing customers from convenience. Anyway, I had grabbed a few re-usable bags from my car. They happen to be the color and style of bags that Walmart uses. I handed them to the cashier (because I couldn't bag my own groceries because that cashier had literally put water in front of the self check-out so I couldn't use it) and he ignored them and said something about having Walmart bags. I asked him what was wrong with that? They don't even say Walmart on them. "That's our competitor." He said. He then proceeded to put my groceries into Dollar General bags and tried to hand them to me. I had to negotiate with him to allow me out of the store with my groceries if I unbagged the groceries he had bagged and put them into my own re-usable bags because the whole point of having re-usable bags was not to use new ones. Thankfully, he did not decide to hold my groceries hostage. Grocery shopping is supposed to be a simple experience. You scan and bag your groceries and leave. Now that the employees have taken to berating me and doing whatever they can to make that process less simple, I'm not going to this store anymore. I'm going to Walmart from now on. I'll post something on Nextdoor so I can pick up milk for others who, like me, have come to hate this store, its employees, and everything about it. read more
