The bakery (panaderias) here has all the classics like concha, empanadas, piggies, bolillos, etc. The hot food section has a variety of tasty looking meats stewing away, such as barbacoa, carnitas, chicken, nopales. They also serve hot tamales, sopes, enchiladas, burritos, Chile relleni, taquitos, soups, shrimp cebicbe, salsas, champurrado and more! Their plate and family meals are a crazy good deal. Admittedly, the hit food left something to be desired but for the price and service, can't really complain. (The tamale I got was a bit dry and needed a but more flavor, but it was toward evening and each tamale was hefty for $2 a piece. Rice and beans hit the spot.) The lady serving our food was very nice too. Sad that this place selling legit pumpkin empanadas is so far away from home but I'd happily go back here for more empanadas and grocery shopping again.

The owner, Fred (Alfred) is a friendly swiss man who must be in his 80's. He has a thick swiss accent, but that only makes sense considering the name of the store! During my discussion with Fred, I found out that he started working with meat in the mid 60's. He started the Matterhorn Meat Shop in 1975 and has been doing it ever since. He told me that he got into the business because he enjoyed doing it, not because of the money! I was excited to try a get a feel for the quality here, so I decided to trying a little bit of several items: Jerky ($16/95/lb): Very good. He keeps it frozen, but it's been great once it's thawed. It's a bit on the thicker side, but I'd get some again. Jerky is always expensive, but this seemed pretty reasonable. Gothaer Zervelat - It's basically a german salami. It's an oblong shape and has a pretty good smoke flavor to it. If you're into salami, try some of this! Knockwurst - I haven't tried it yet, but I'm told that its the swiss version of a hot dog. It looks similar to a brat. Spicy Sausage - A bit milder than I would like, but delicious! Mild Sausage - Delightful! A fairly standard sausage, but worth trying. Landjaeger - Its quite a bit different that the other ones that I've had. Based on my experience here, I can't imagine that this is anything but 100% authentic. They are pretty big, but the flavor is mild and worth trying. Bring cash - I'm not sure if he accepts credit cards or not. I think that his register is the same one that he had in 1975, which is awesome! My only regret is that I didn't discover the Matterhorn Meat Shop earlier. This is undoubtedly on it's way to becoming one of my favorite shops around!

The produce here is always excellent, including a number of things you don't find a lot of other places - last week I grabbed parsnips, turnips, rutabaga, and beets for a mix my wife was making. Those are surprisingly hard to find! The meat counter is a delight and they have an amazing wine and beer selection that runs the gamut from low end, I just need alcohol for a dinner party stuff, to much higher end, I need a housewarming gift for someone I like type action! The cheese selection is solid and it looks as if they're continuing to expand the specialty cheeses. Everyone here is always exceptionally friendly and goes out of their way to help customers. It's out on the same road as Snow Mountain Ranch is a great place to stop after a nice hike. We've got a lovely greenhouse and plenty of plants outdoors as well. We picked up a good number of plants for a garden as well as some soil and feeder to mix in. During the whole pandemic, they have done a great job of making sure people are protected and maintain appropriate distance while perusing. They limit the number of people that are paying and in close proximity - those little things make a big difference. The folks out here are super friendly and while stuff is a little bit more expense Then if he went to somewhere like a big box store, this place is run by a local family was ready to help and loves what they do.
