This is always a place that we stop when heading over the pass. It is also very easy to drive by and not give it a second look. When you first walk in it looks like an old fashioned butcher shop with display cases from end to end. But the meat that comes from here is spectacular. Some of the highlights are the beef Jerky, pepperoni sticks, smoked sausage and a mix they call the "good stuff". The good stuff is a mixture of their smoked meats and a couple of different cheese cubes. They have a large wall of sauces and seasoning for those who like to smoke meats or plan to grill up a top shelf steak. The service is always friendly and efficient. read more

Literally since 1887, this family run business has been serving up, what amounts to be, in my humble points of view, the best meat, and meat related products to anyone who dates to search out for the best. Oh, and their service is beyond wonderful, their staff are knowledgable, and honestly give care to each customer. It's the full package, and you would be best served, if you make and effort to go. Literally when you walk in you see the full length of the place is a chill case of meat. Things like Steaks, chops, and oh wait.. do order something call "the good stuff" which is meat can cheese, ready to eat. The outside wall, full of sauces, dressings, and everything that you can put on meat. On the side wall, there is something that deserves its own review.. they sell Hunter & Holden's Famous Cheese Spread! which is in a fridge case. I think this is THE shop to stop at in Cle Elum! There's tons of meats so it can be overwhelming. They're "known" for their beef jerkey supposedly but I'm no connoisseur so it was just ok for me (maybe a bit tough?). They have a blend of "the good stuff" which is like their meat and cheese blend which is tasty and they allowed us to sample some too! Tons of drinks, sauces, spices galore . . . but what really got us was their CHEESE SPREAD!! Huge assortment of meats & related groceries inside and a meat vending machine outside. Helpful staff. Bring cash if don't want to pay the 4% credit card fee. Easily found street parking. Asked for recommendations and was guided by the friendly staff (with cooking tips!) through the big assortment of hickory smoked jerky, seasoned/marinated/smoked/cured meats and choice meats. Related groceries of ingredients, sauces and dried goods along a long wall. Bought Beef Bacon got 6 slices (1.8lbs) @$8.97/lb =$16.15 pretty good substitute for pork bacon. Crisps up well (then chopped to sauté with Brussel sprouts and some for fried rice.) This place was a must visit in Cle Elum. They had really good smoked pork chops. Cook for 3 mins on each side to brown. The most tender meat ever. And you have to grab a bag of there cut up cheese and meats. It offered a big variety for its price. The only thing i wish it had was pre marinated meats but they had a whole wall of marinades to buy. read more

My buddy introduced me to Owen's smoked pork chops at his BBQ's. When he would make a trip out to Eastern WA he would always make a stop at Owen's Meats. Now I've inherited that bug. Located in the quaint town of Cle Elum, it's a great stopping point between Seattle/Bellevue and Eastern WA. For us, it's about over an hour's drive, so it's close enough to get my fix. We've also picked up their rib eye, and honestly, the marbling on it is perfect, tons of flavor and it stands on its own, you only need to salt and pepper it, throw it on the grill and just enjoy the meat party in your mouth! A warning, on the weekends during summer months you will more than likely find a wait, but be patient, the staff are super friendly and are willing to offer suggestions on meat prep. Owen's will always be a stop for us on the way back from wine country, besides, what better way to pair the tons of wine we picked up than with a scrumptious steak from Owen's! read more

Run, don't walk to Owen's. "The Good Stuff" deserves Several separate orders, or there may be regret that you didn't buy enough. The Beef jerky is beyond belief. It is like eating a room temperature steak, that is better than Any steak, you have ever had before. But.... The Landjaeger???? If you are married, or have children and/or siblings, there is No Greater Love, than bringing home Landjaeger to your people. I... tried. But after 2 attempts? I FINALLY got it Right: buy about $60 dollars worth of Landjaegar, and HIDE several sticks from yourself or come heaven or hell YOU, will eat them. If I lived in Cle Elum, or, near the shop in Western WA? I would consider it almost a religious pilgrimage to go there and give them a large portion of my earnings. It is Totally worth it. Owen's Meats has the only meat vending machine I have ever seen. It's outside the store just in case someone shows up after hours and really needs a protein kick. I respect the meat innovation. My only comparable for this was seeing cupcake vending machines in Chicago. I'm sure they are elsewhere by now, but from what I can recall, they were invented in Chicago. Apparently, they were actually used, not just a decoration on the sidewalk. Unfortunately, I didn't see anyone using the meat vending machine at Owens while I was there but almost wish I tried it. While cupcake vending machines were invented in Chicago, meat vending machines must've been were invented at Owens. Moving on to the main event at Owens, the meat inside the store, and I was thoroughly impressed. They had a huge selection that all seemed to be at good prices, almost comparable with what you would find at a grocery store. I find that most butcher shops have much higher prices than what I want to pay on a regular basis. If that is the case, the butcher is pricing himself out of being a weekly stop and turns into the destination for special occasions. Owens wants to be your regular butcher. We got a handful of items, but my favorite purchase was a boneless smoked turkey breast. I've seen smoked turkey before but it is usually only sold in leg form. When this is the case, it's really hard to slice off the turkey meat in between the bone and tendons. Owen's smoked turkey breast can be thinly sliced and enjoyed on sandwiches with avocado or with cheese and crackers. read more

We stopped by on the way home after a drive. I've heard about this place from a co-worker so when I saw it - we had to stop. Great variety of meats and other goodies. When you enter, you immediately see a long meat counter with a huge selection. As we began looking for what to cook for dinner, I turned around and mesmerized by a wall filled with pantry goodies, jams, jellies, pickled items, seasoning and sauces! I'm a fan of lazy girl cooking on busy days so wonderful cuts and easy seasoning truly appeals to me We picked up a couple of pork chops and a bottle of portabella mushroom and garlic sauce. I visited Owens today, the first time in a year as I had some time and wanted their great smoked pork chops. I got my usual meats from the butcher. Presented my credit card and was shown a new machine that asked me how much I wanted to tip. Are you kidding me? You are a butcher shop selling meat to me. You are not filling my glass, picking food off my tablecloth, or bringing me a meal. Completely unacceptable. Would have been a 5 star visit, but I for one am tired of Tipflation in a state where your employees get a high wage for bagging me up some bacon. I am not asked to tip at Safeway. The store has a great selection of beef, pork and chicken. Prices are $$$$ though. Be prepared to spend, but again the product is good. I don't know if I want to visit again, with the expectation of a tip for buying a product. read more

Probably one of the best butcher shops I've been to. So every time I'm in the cascades I make it a point to stop and stock up. There are 3 things that I would say the have the best of. Their pork lion, spicy pepperoni with cheese, and their trail mix spicy or normal. I usually snag about 5lbs of the pepperoni and trail mix. Absolutely great for the hikes! It's a great group that works there, they can come off as sassy but it's their dry sense of humor. Don't take anything personal, they are good people and know their stuff. It can be a bit pricey, but the good stuff usually is. If you're just wanting some normal grade cuts of meat, maybe try another shop. But it's worth a visit at least once for the trail Mix and pepperoni or jerky. read more

What Service! We stopped in on our way back from Eastern Washington to pick up some of their famous beef jerky- The gentleman who helped us was so friendly and informative. We bought beef jerky, spicy cheese pepperoni and some bottled salad dressings. Such a great assortment of meats, all looked delicious. The bottled and dry items were really nice as well, so much variety! Next time we head through Cle Elum bringing a cooler and buying some meat to grill at home. While Owens had the usual suspects in the butcher shop, they also carried a section of Bison meat. Which was good to see. You should be weary of this business, they charge a convenience fee of 4.0% on visa debit card purchases. I felt like was swindled by this business. Truly a candy store for carnivores. Free street parking can be found. Discover is an accepted form of payment. This place is packed with patrons excitedly perusing, sampling and purchasing either raw cuts of meat, cooked and seasoned meats, jarred condiments, sauces and cheeses. Samples of a variety of meats, cheeses and sauces are enthusiastically handed out by energetic staff members. Every sample was delicious! Be warned, each sample tried will find it's way onto your order. I was impressed with how well the staff handled the chaos of patrons in a friendly and orderly manner. Every time I now travel west, I prepare for a stop into Owen's by having a cooler packed with ice in order to transport my purchase back home. While traveling the two hours back home, I happily nibble on either some Pepperoni or Beef Jerky. Everyone has a place that they feel encompasses the things that they love and hope for. Truly a place that defines them. This may be a beach, a cabin in the woods, or a grandparents home around the holidays. For me, Owens meats is that new spot in my mind! I've been hearing about this place for years, and finally had the chance to stop in. Truly, this is my new safe space. Upon walking in, it's like being transported to a place where meat, cheese, beer and sauces rule the day and you get to partake in their glorious reign! The counter is 50 or so feet of beautiful cuts of beef, chicken and pork. One case is dedicated to cheese and another to dry cuts like prosciutto and jerky. We grabbed a prime filet, some smoked pork chops and a pound of a dried sausage called Land Jaeger. FACT - Land Jaeger from here may have been why the tongue was invented, or at least a consideration! It's probably the best sausage we've ever had...and these peeps love meat! The prime filet was as perfect as we'd hoped and the chops were magnificent! The prices are fair and despite your initial reaction to $17 per pound for Land Jaeger, get it! Four of us went through a pound and a half over a weekend and bought more for home on our way back! The meat vending machine outside and in 17 other places (soon to include Yakima) is ingenuity at its finest and is both brilliant and hilarious! This place is so epic we stopped in twice in 24 hours. Let me start by saying I haven't tried the food yet. This place was recommended by a friend and I'm excited to eat the food I bought (cheese dip, smoked pork chops and salami) however it is a big store and I was overwhelmed. The person who served me was patronizing and rude. I asked for jerky and was pointed to a counter at the end. I said "do you package this?" And she said "No." No other information offered and I was bummed because I was excited about the jerky. I ended up choosing salami. She asked how I wanted the salami cut and I was unsure and said "round circles?" She laughed at me and said "obviously its round circles, do you want thick or thin?" Its just not cool to be treated unkindly when you're patronizing a local business. I hope this is addressed by management- just a blanket- be kind-might go a long way. read more

Go figure they didn't have it ready. This happened once before. We just need to make sure we ask who we're talking to so we know who to call out if they do it again. I just purchased some real fine, quality grade A meats here and am thoroughly impressed. I stopped by yesterday morning in hopes of finding some delicious brats and I was not disappointed. I purchased a package of polish kielbasa and a package of the Hot German sausage. My favorite happened to be the polish kielbasa, you can taste and smell the hickory smoke flavor and it is wonderful. The Hot German were fine too, in their own right. I, for one, could handle a little more spice. I plan to make future stops here and purchase some fancy spicy brown mustard on my next trip. This is my Graceland! You know that one store that you HAVE to stop at every time you drive by? Owens Meats is now that place for me! Everything in here is amazing!!! They've got just about anything you want meat related, a lot of cheese options, a ton of beer choices. This was my first trip to Owens and I ended up leaving with a LOT of meat. I picked up the following: Smoked Porkchops - Get some of these! They are about 80% cooked and 100% delicious. All you have to do is warm them up and chow them down. I will pick some of them up every time I stop in. They are relatively cheap and are probably the best bang for the buck. Highly recommend! Bacon - They slice it how you want it. In my cake, THICK. Some of the better bacon that i've had....and I've been to Baconfest in Iowa on three separate occasions..... Kansas City Bacon - A fantastic, slightly leaner type of bacon. Very good and worth a try. Beef Jerkey - This barely made it home. Holy. Crap. This. Is. Good! Beef Sticks - They have a couple options. I recommend getting at least a yard of it....and get the one with cheese in it, unless you don't like freedom. Smoked Flagship Cheese - I'm not sure if they cold smoke this in house or if it come from beecher's Cheese like this. Either way, it's wild. Get it for you next get-together and you'll have a room full of happy people! While this was my first trip here, I've eaten several steaks from here - all were exceptional. If you can shell out the money, get some prime steaks and cook them medium rare. They don't come cheap, but there are few things in this world that are more delicious! A couple weeks ago a neighbor was talking about how amazing this place was, the other neighbor came outside, joined the conversation and co-signed for the review given vy the other neighbor. Knowing I would be headed to Eastern Washington, I thought I would plan to stop in here as I never pass a real butcher without trying the jerky. I give the staff and pricing an A, but the meat didn't move me. The pepperoni was a little light on flavor and the casing didn't have any snap to it. I am about 5 miles from a butcher in Seattle and their Pepperoni is twice as good. The jerky was salty, and that is a good thing, unfortunately the salt was the flavor. I like a salty jerky, but I also like a rich smoky flavor to boot. It wasn't terrible, but I can tell you this. Even if I lived in town, I wouldn't stop for the jerky again. Forgive me spelling, but the Lanjager was really good. I give it an A. All said, with a great product and two others that didn't impress, I would return or recommend. I can see why the place is popular, but like too many other places, instead of making the best possible product, they appear to cater to the watered down taste buds of a new generation that can't distinguish between hot and spicy.
