Coming into town, the city limit sign and the drop in speed let you know you've arrived somewhere that serves as more than just a dot on the map. I spent a little time learning about Ava while we were here, and it quickly became clear that this town is the hub for the surrounding area. A manager at Walmart told me that this store and the businesses around it are essentially the central gathering place for the entire county, and after being here, that feels exactly right. In a rural area like this, it's where people come to shop, get gas, run errands, and connect with everyday life. Since we're headed to visit my cousin in Mountain Home, Arkansas, in about an hour, we stopped to pick up flowers as a welcoming gift. While I was there, I also looked for one of those exterior windshield scrubber squeegees for the road ahead. The regular ones were sold out, but they did have an "intelligent" Rain-X style spray squeegee. One of the associates mentioned there's an O'Reilly down the street, so I may deal with that another time. One small moment that really stood out was seeing a gentleman bringing his grocery bags back into Walmart for recycling. It was such a simple thing, but it said a lot about the rhythm of this town and how this store really serves as part of the community's daily routine. That's what I love about traveling by road. Even a quick stop in a town like Ava tells a story. You learn a little local history, pick up something useful for the drive, find flowers for family, and get a glimpse of how a community comes together in one place before continuing on down the road toward Arkansas.

Okay, so I swore I would never review WalMart. I mean, it's WalMart, right? We've all been there,…read morewe've all stood in a long line with slow cashiers and we have all walked a hundred miles in this store just to get milk. We have also all marveled at the human species while in this ginormous store. We've been there, done that. The game changer for me, though, was the order pickup tower that was recently installed. WOW-WE! Before the tower when you ordered something online for store pickup, you had certain hurdles you had to jump over to get your item. You had to scan in, wait for someone to acknowledge you, show you ID, wait while they searched through lockers to find your item and then you were good to go. With the tower, you scan in the barcode that has been emailed to you. Your product is rotated around and then scooped into a bin and the bin releases into an opening in the tower. You simply retrieve your item and *POOF* off you go. It took me under two minutes to get my item. Seriously, it was that fast. It was fun watching the item being retrieved, too. The best part about this new service is you do not have to wait for someone to wait on you. You don't have to wait for fumbling clerks to find a locker key, rummage through other items to retrieve your product. It is quite an incredible system. I actually might order more things just so I can use it again. LOL. At this point in time, there are only 150 of these towers in operation throughout the United States. I am just grateful there is one in Lawrence. I am one of those techy geek people and WalMart just knocked it out of the park!

This morning after taking a stroll around the town square of Mountain Grove, my brother and I paid…read morea visit to Richard Brothers Supermarket, which is cat-a-corner from we are staying. I guess you can say that the Johnson Brothers were checking out the Richard Brothers. No, not that way, get your head out of the gutter. We heard tell that the bakery held within its display cases a certain local delicacy that had to be seen, and tasted, to be believed. So we wound our way through the 1960 style market until we found ourselves standing at our destination. Upon looking in the display case, we saw what we came for. The ultimate of ultimates, the belief beyond beliefs, the glory of glorious, the one and only, glazed crosaunts. They were lovingly splayed on two shelves of trays, patiently awaiting these two customers in particular, to make a monetary transaction, and take them home. Thus it was so. A funny thing, there was a list on the outer case stating what kind of pastries that were offered for sale. We studied it trying to find the special name given to these wonders, (as we didn't want to look like a couple tourists), but couldn't find one. We did see a generic crosaunt, but thought, nah, that couldn't be it. So I asked the nice attendant behind the counter "what do you call these things"? She looked at me, like, huh? Why, these are crosaunts she said. Cover blown. The crosaunt was huge! Far bigger than ordinary. My brother said that back at the old home place, they would call these "bigerns", (translation big ones....with a southern twang) where he comes up with this stuff I don't know. Of course the "bigerns" were melt in your mouth delicious. Like eating flavored air. I highly recommend picking up a few, or a dozen, for their shelf life is almost non existent. The trays barely have time to get sticky. I should give them more than 3 stars, but for lack of promotion, the Richard Brothers are leaving a lot of money on the table. Something the Johnson Brothers would never allow to happen. Properly promoted, the lone nameless crosaunt, could revitalize the economy of this sleepy town square. For instance: Mountain Grove, home of the BIGERN! Hey Mr.. Richard Brothers, If you bake it, they will come.
