AVOID AT ALL COSTS! I rented a Ford Focus (or similar) from Dollar and they don't make those as an EV. When I arrived at Dollar at Raleigh Airport, I handed over my California drivers license and my AMEX Platinum card. Once the agent saw both he lit up and then asked where I was taking the car, a question I found odd there. I told him and then he said that might be difficult with an EV, well I didn't rent an EV nor could I use one for this trip but I was told that was my only option. I didn't see any EV's on their lot! As I pushed back I was told the only way to "upgrade" to a gasoline powered car was to rent a full size one. I stood my ground and a bit of an argument ensued and he could not even provide a price for the full size car. I finally said OK and that I would call AMEX and dispute the charges later to correct the scam they were pulling. At that point he said he just closed out my booking and refused to rent me a vehicle. I was not going to be extorted and walked down the street to Alamo and rented a car for the same price. read more

This post may save someone the aggravation I experienced. There are signs with QR codes placed in line and at the entrance that say, "Check in now to skip the line." I followed the process, paid the $30 convenience fee, and received a "Success!" message with instructions to proceed to the main rental counter to receive my vehicle assignment and rental agreement. Unfortunately, this directed me to the exact same line I had just paid $30 to skip. The dollar employees didn't seem to care, and we never received a receipt, so it may be difficult to get this refunded. read more

While helping my sister get her Dollar Car Rental at RDU Airport, I received a tire puncture entering their car lot. It was only on one tire. I used the correct entrance btw. I didn't back up. I even asked the employee who went to talk to a manager to check the camera and see that I entered correctly. The manager didn't even bother coming to see me. She sent the employee back saying thousands of cars have gone across the "spikes" without getting their tire punched, so they are not to blame. Luckily, I have AAA, so the flatbed transport to the tire shop didn't cost anything, but the tire replacement was $250. BTW I'd had a full set of tires put on a month and a half ago, so we are talking about tires in excellent condition. It bothers me that the manager avoided speaking with me and instead sent the employee back to me to do her/his dirty work. I was quoted one price for a rental and the price at the facility was $250 more (not including the deposit). Their claim was that the price of the LDW changed because I chose a different car. Line literally around the building in the cold with only one attendant. Someone said they'd been waiting two and a half hours. No excuse for such terrible management. Rent elsewhere. This isn't the first time they've screwed new over and I regret giving them a second chance. Also, there's a $200 cancellation fee on the day of the rental, and there's no customer support phone number, only an email form. It's literally a trap. Had a late flight, but vehicle was reserved. My wife belongs to their rewards program so she made the reservation since part of their rewards program is the spouse can be added as an additional driver at no charge. Counter person advised she had never heard of the Dollar Rewards program and there would be a charge for me as an additional driver. Needless to say I didn't add myself. NEVER USE THIS COMPANY AT THIS LOCATION. Any other rental agency at RDU will be better, no matter the cost. There was a 2 hour line to get the vehicle. The SUV I had reserved wasn't available, so they gave me a crappy compact that reeked of cigarette smoke and charged $200 for insurance for a 2-day rental when I made clear I only needed a basic insurance damage waiver. They charged for insurance I didn't ask for nor did they explain all the add ons they included without my knowledge (e.g., $20 PER DAY for roadside assistance!!), and after standing in line 2 + hours, I was then in a hurry. Once I got to my computer and saw what was charged, I tried calling the office, but it's virtually impossible to find a local number for that office, despite being given one that didn't work from a call center in India & a number of attempts to then call 800 and 866 numbers and rehash the contract, I couldn't get through to a live person. All of these other horrible reviews are 100 percent accurate. Upon returning the car and speaking to someone, rental agent said: Tough Sh*t. DO NOT DO IT - they will rip you off. read more

DO NOT RENT FROM THEM OR HERTZ AT RDU. Over charge for many things not told and not explained. I got charge for tolls when there were none on my route. I got over charged for fuel even though I filled tank and what was missing was less than a gallon by the time I got to airport. $27 charged. Now tolls that were not in my route nor mentioned they had a pay by plate. I think I'm overcharged because I insisted on a down grading from electric to regular car and did not buy insurance or upgrade to midsize. Though my direct agent was pushy but he was not rude but that cannot be said for his coworkers that night. Renting with Dollar is one of the biggest mistakes I've made. I reserved a car rental in April and they had me pay for most of it then. In the email they sent me, they specified that the charge would be from Car Hire. I had no issues picking up the car or returning it, but they charged my card the full amount even though I had already paid for most of it. I tried emailing many times and calling their phone numbers and could never reach anyone, so I had to have my credit union do a chargeback. Because of this, Dollar has been sending me invoices for the full amount again and I still hadn't been able to get ahold of anyone to discuss the fraudulent charge. Today I finally got ahold of someone and he stated that I had initially paid Car Hire, not Dollar, and that I still owed the full amount, even though Dollar specifically told me when I booked the reservation that the initial payment would be charged by Car Hire but went to them. When I argued with the person I was talking to, they got frustrated and claimed they had already sent me to collections (so why are you trying to get me to pay Dollar still?). This is all for $117.17 by the way (the amount I still owe and have been trying to pay). I will never rent from Dollar or any of their affiliates again and have told everyone I know about this situation so they don't get harassed too. read more

Rented a car for a roadtrip, staff was nice but the car was something else. I got a ford escape, driving down I-95 speed limit is 70 mph, once I hit 70 mph in the vehicle it would start shaking to the point I thought the tires were going to fall off. Driving down I-95 in a shaky car it started to pour rain turned the windshield wipers on and the wipers never touched the window on the passenger side making it almost impossible to see. Also once you reach 30+ mph the vehicle gets very loud never been in a car this loud before. Jeep wranglers with the roof off are quieter.... Only thing I liked about the vehicle was the heated seats and heated steering wheel that's about all. read more

I booked a rental car and was sent a confirmation code in which a Toyota Corolla or similar was available to me. My reservation pickup time was 5:00pm. Firstly, why is a pickup the same time as the store closing, and secondly, the gentlemen in the store turned the lights off and locked the door at 4:57pm. Upon trying to get in, I initially was just started at, and the manager greets me by saying, "Last name?" He became very combative saying he didn't see a reservation and ultimately said he didn't have a car and there was nothing he could do, despite Dollar confirming my rental for pickup at 5pm. He was extremely rude and dismissive or concerns and did not want to answer my questions about how I was able to schedule a rental yet there were no cars available at pickup. He stated that Dollar overbooks on purpose in hopes that people cancel their reservations. I am extremely disappointed with how I was treated and will never use this rental service again nor will I refer friends and family to this service. I was skeptical about renting from here due to the bad reviews but went against my gut and booked with them anyway. Wow do I regret it. The poor reviews are definitely justified. I waited in line for over an hour and half before I got to the counter even though I had filled out all of my information online ,including credit card, which they advertised as a way for me to just show up and pick up my car without waiting in line. When it was my pickup time, I clicked on the provided link to choose my vehicle but it kept saying my vehicle was not ready and to check back in 15 minutes. The 15 minute timer does not count down unless you stay on the screen, which was very annoying. I decided to wait in line anyway, which I am glad I did because I believe that link would have just kept telling that my vehicle was not ready even though I was able to go and select a car right away when I finally got to the counter. read more

Worst rental car experience of my life! I will never use Dollar Car Rental again. Anything you think you're saving with lower prices is offset by their deceptive business practices and hidden (or downright fraudulent) charges. My story: after a 5 hour flight, we showed up at the pickup location at RDU on a Saturday at 6pm to find more than 18 people in line and ONE single person working at the counter. It took over 2 hours to get to the front. I felt really bad for families with babies or small children. When I did finally get to the counter, I told the agent I did NOT need insurance since I have full rental car coverage on my auto insurance. Signed the tiny pad which had a waiver on it (you know, to waive the insurance). Drove 3 hours to our destination. Next day when looking at the paperwork I noticed that they had added "loss damage waiver" for $35/day and "premium roadside assistance" for $10/day. Called to rectify but the rep couldn't do anything over the phone, said I had to drive back to RDU (6 hour round trip) or could probably get it resolved when I returned it. Upon return at the end of my trip, I talked to a manager to get the incorrect charges removed, he said it couldn't be done until I was emailed the final invoice. Two days later I got the invoice and called, but they couldn't help me either. Since I signed the little pad, I apparently have no recourse (even though I called as soon as I spotted the error). Their customer support is useless and will only try to pass it off to the next person down the chain. I will be calling my credit card company to initiate a chargeback on the items I did not ask for, but I'm not even sure how successful that will be since everything is worded as a "contract" (even though they never actually go over the details with you - just ask you to sign a paid with a few words of text on it). If you must rent a car, I would suggest: 1. Make sure you confirm EVERY line item on the slip before leaving the counter, no matter how long you've been traveling and standing in line and just want to leave. Once you leave, you have ZERO recourse to make changes. 2. Choose ANY other rental company than Dollar. I've used Turo in the past and considering how much Dollar just scammed from me, it would have been cheaper. read more

Can I give LESS than 1 star?! The Dollar rental charges went up in 200.00 intervals when I picked up from RDU - finally, I had to find a dollar agent (no easy task). Even though I'd rented through Priceline, and Dollar had ALREADY been paid, DOLLAR attempted to add unauthorized charges to my account, and the car I was assigned was NOT in the "assigned" spot, which was another Dollar nightmare. The option to go directly to your car is a joke and ONLY available if you give your credit card number - without being advised of the costs! There is no clear way to preregister without providing your credit card number and then be charged at pickup with full, accurate disclosure of the charges. It is ABSOLUTELY foolish to give your CC info without having a CLUE as to what you will be charged for and when and why. But that is what Dollar wants you to do. My return experience was WORSE!!! (BTW, being in a state of grief can REALLY get in the way of attention and focus) - I inadvertently returned the car to the wrong airport (Dulles vs. Ronald Reagan) - instead of being alerted by the Dollar representative and given the option to go to the correct location - nothing was said - the car was accepted, and I was charged TWICE! I had more than enough time to drive to the correct airport - I was never given that option. In addition, the absolute inability to talk to a live person at a dollar unless you are throwing more money at them is non-existent. I wanted to confirm that I'd agree to prepay for a full tank - NO WAY to get that information. Every single number I could find took me to an automated system - a live person is ONLY available if you are throwing your money at them! I find them a disreputable company engaging in disreputable practices. Transparency is a joke. I will NEVER rent from Dollar/Priceline again, and I heartily advise you to be seriously cautious!!! Please! My wallet is already shattered - I hope no one else has a similar experience. Please, please, please be careful and STRONGLY reconsider Dollar and /or Priceline. A piece of information I was unaware of (I assumed all airport car rental locations are 24hrs). My flight was at 5 AM and I was freaking out on what I shall do with the rental, with long lines at the TSA I would miss my flight! Till my hero Mr. Nader who is about 30 minutes early to his shift showed up and allowed me in through the gate, took the rental in and drove me to the airport from the rental location when his shift hasn't even started. When we did find some, they were either completely in-use or out of service. The few we found charged slowly (3-4 hours). My cousin is following us around in her Toyota Camry to make sure we are not stranded. This is a 4 day vaca to see family, and all we have done is stress about transportation.
