If I could give them 0 stars I would. I made a reservation for my Mid-Size car to be picked up at 11:30am. I had a meeting at noon and figured that gave me enough time. It took the shuttle 20 mins to pick me up and I had to call them to come get me. I show up and the guy tells me that they don't have any cars and I need to wait an hour. I asked why make a reservation?!?! He said it wasn't his policy and he would cancel for me. Where do I get a car?!?! Avis didn't have any cars either. Payless flat out sucks. Horrible attitude and the fact that they know people are going to be showing up for a car and don't have any speaks to the lack of customer service. They offered nothing for my inconvenience. They told me the time just guaranteed the price not the actual pick up time of the vehicle. Are you f'n kidding me?!?! Who does business like this?! STAY AWAY FROM PAYLESS. I only booked them because I got extra miles with Southwest. Never again. I will stick to Alamo and Hertz.

When it came to renting a car, I usually pick one with the best rates available. Most times, it's the national name brand that's attached to it. Is Payless a national brand name? I need to check on that, but as long it was cheap, I was happy as a clam. I found Payless Car rental while looking for an affordable car rental during my short stay in Raleigh, NC. It happened when I booked the car on Priceline.com a month earlier prior to arrival and found some shockingly good deals there. While it wasn't Hertz or Budget, I felt that getting a cheaper rate would help smooth out any lapses in customer service I may have experienced during my time in Raleigh. And so, I arrived at the RDU regional airport, hopped on the car rental shuttle outside baggage claim, and arrived at the Budget / Payless car rental office lot. The car rental experience, like many others, is usually cut and dry,and renting from Payless here at Raleigh-Durham regional airport is no different. While they don't seem like they have a national reputation as Hertz, Alamo, or National, Payless does hold its own and i am colored impressed with what they offer. Although the service could be more professional and the presentation at the rental office can be better presented, it was as good as it can get. The Payless Car rental experience is located just off at the RDU regional airport, since you need to take a shuttle from the terminal to get to the car rental lot, occupied by Budget and Payless. Maybe Budget and Payless are partners or one owns the other, I don't know. Gosh, there are a lot of 1 star reviews here, and I get that, but for me, I thought that my own personal experience with Payless Car rental was just at least a bare minimum a 3 star experience. I just needed a rental car that's fully functional and didn't have problems with it. Plus, as mentioned before, customer service here can be lacking, but it turned out okay and I was in and out within 20 minutes after arrival. Payless car rental advertises cheap car rental deals, which is a great advertisement, but what is lacking makes up for in customer service, which kinds of balances everything out. The dude that was at the counter that day didn't feel like he wanted to be there. I guess he could be like 21 to 25 years old, but I guess he knew what he was doing when he checked me in. Car rental rates were decently lower than that of the other guys, but be aware of what other dangers can lurk if you low ball your car rental deals. For what its worth, I would exercise caution when doing business with Payless. While my experience was fair and borderline average, there may be other instances than that can go bad and it certainly has been with other reviews here on Yelp. For myself, they have me a boxy red car, which was decently good. As long as the car ran well, I do not have major qualms with Payless, although the aformentioned customer service. The car was relatively clean and performed good. The drive from the RDU regional airport terminal was rather uneventful and positive. It wasn't even 10 minutes when I arrived to the Payless Car rental counter. I'm not sure how many times I have rented from Payless Car rental anywhere else in the USA or Canada, but it was the first time that I rented from the RDU location. I could recommend Payless Car rental as your car rental point of choice, but you may want to do your homework and due diligence and not be swayed by the cheaper car rental rates like I have. Maybe its better to pay a little bit more to be treated a little better than just someone who needs a cheap car for a day or a week. All I can say is, just shop around and you may be better off here. But if you are insistent with the cheap-o rates that Payless is advertising, you would want to just be aware of what else is in store for you. 3.5 stars overall and 4.0 stars for the being fairly inexpensive. While the customer service is lacking, the car given to me was clean and washed before I took delivery. The return was decently good and I got my receipt from the Payless agent before I hopped onto the shuttle back to the RDU terminal. Support local! C+

Poor service. 30-45 minutes to pick up a car. They advertise cheap cars. Wish they would also say they have cheap service. Why would Avis allow this company to operate this way.

I should've listened to the reviewers. It really is as bad as they say. Enter here? More like get ready to wait & wait & for a broken car.

I strive to be a low-maintenance traveler, no matter whether I am traveling for business or…read morepleasure. I've been an Alamo Insider member for many years, a membership that usually provides me the ultimate convenience upon landing--walking straight to my assigned car and heading out on my trip with zero friction, and I reserve my vehicle ahead of time using the Alamo app. While Alamo typically nails this "easy" experience, my recent stop at the Raleigh-Durham airport didn't quite deliver the "easy" experience I've come to expect. Upon landing, the Alamo app indicated I'd still need to visit the counter for a car assignment. RDU still requires travelers to board a shuttle bus for transportation to the rental car lot, but thankfully, the buses run frequently so we didn't wait long. When we arrived at the lot, I was mildly discouraged to see a line snaking out of the office with only one customer service rep on duty. However, kudos to the on-duty manager for quickly recognizing the queue and offering to process several reservations at the adjacent National desk. The customer service rep who helped me was great at getting our trip back on track -- I had my license, credit card, and reservation number ready-to-go and they didn't try to push any "add-ons" like the collision damage waiver or satellite radio, which I appreciated (but am sure that Alamo's corporate overlords at Enterprise Holdings will be disappointed to read). I was, however, somewhat frustrated they didn't have the full-size hybrid sedan I originally requested, especially since I had a lot of driving to do. (At this point, I'm reminded of the Seinfeld episode where Jerry exclaims in exasperation: "You know how to take the reservation, you just don't know how to hold the reservation. And that's really the most important part of the reservation: the holding!") I was initially assigned a Kia K5 from a lower vehicle class, which showed significant wear and tear and several dings upon inspection. When I returned to the office to request a different vehicle, the rep handled it professionally and quickly found a 2026 Toyota Camry hybrid with less than 3,000 miles on the odometer. The rest of the rental went smoothly -- the nearly new Camry performed perfectly and the drop-off process was a breeze. While it wasn't the "straight to the lot and go" experience I usually enjoy, the staff's hustle, politeness, and willingness to fix the vehicle issue was definitely worthy of a 4-star review.

The overall experience is why I won't be going back. This is also the Advantage Car Rental office, so my review applies to them as well. First: The shuttle bus took a half hour or more to come and pick me and another customer up. There were at least 2 or 3 each of the competitors shuttles coming by in that same time frame. The shuttle driver did not help the customer's with their bags. Never saw that before. He was more interested in talking to a pretty young coed he was dropping off than helping the other customers. Then: There was one clerk in the office. I came in with 4 other customers, and easily waited 30 minutes to get my car. He was thorough and polite, but alone and overwhelmed. Shame on you management. Thirdly: I checked the car out before I drove it off the lot, but it was a black car in a poorly lit lot, and was not sure the real condition of the car until the next morning. Luckily there was no external or internal damage to the car. The car proved to be OK, although there was a lot of tire noise at medium speeds. Sounded like a bad tire to me. Lastly: I was returning the car very early on my last day in Durham, 545am. I pulled onto the lot, the office was lit up and unlocked, but nobody was home. I walked around the building, knocked on the office door, called out, etc.. No answer. Finally a different shuttle driver than my first experience showed up, checked out my car, loaded my bag, apologized for no clerks, and drove me to the terminal. He later even emailed my receipt, as there wasn't anyone to give me one at the lot. The whole experience - a major fail by this provider, in my opinion. It was not worth the few dollars saved. Avoid if possible.

She sent the employee back saying thousands of cars have gone across the "spikes" without getting their tire punched, so they are not to blame. Luckily, I have AAA, so the flatbed transport to the tire shop didn't cost anything, but the tire replacement was $250. BTW I'd had a full set of tires put on a month and a half ago, so we are talking about tires in excellent condition. It bothers me that the manager avoided speaking with me and instead sent the employee back to me to do her/his dirty work. Also, I don't understand why their insurance wouldn't cover this freak accident. Unprofessional and shysty/unethical in my opinion.
