I've loved this place since I was a kid, it's great for dates, birthdays, and just hanging w your friends or family!

Horrible customer service. The first time I went they were incredibly lazy and unenthusiastic about any assistance they'd need to provide. When I came back to pick up my piece the worker there was much nicer but I've seen similar complaints about the service and I'd assume it is more likely than not to run into it. The manager was one of the unprofessional people I had dealt with the first time being there so it's not a place that cares too much about customer service and professionalism. the people that work there are SO rude. it's as if that is a job requirement for that place... they always make you feel like you shouldn't be there. it's also impossible to get a spot there, when you call to make a reservation, they huff and puff to look for availability...that is, if they even pick up their phone. Their prices are also very high. as much as I'd like to support local businesses, I can't support bad service... therefore, I'd recommend going to color me mine instead, they have way better staff there. read more

Not friendly at all. I called ahead to make sure my brother with special needs could be accommodated. The woman on the phone was lovely, so I was shocked to get there and see the very unfriendly employees. I introduced my brother by name and no one responded back. He is nonverbal, but he understands everything, so that made me sad. Someone recommended a specific type of paint because she said he "seemed like a messy painter," and truthfully i cannot tell if she was trying to be considerate or if she had some sort of bias against my lovely brother. It was hard to tell, but given that no one there made an effort to interact with any customers I was sad. No one checked in on us, thanked us for coming, or said anything remotely kind. I felt the same way when I picked up the art. I tried to be cheery and conversational and got no response. A positive- I thought the prices were reasonable and the actual painting experience was a good value (in regard to price and product only). read more

Kinda a fun night out, especially Tuesdays where you can bring your own booze - and wine is also provided for a small flat fee. Workers here are ok, but not really the most helpful bunch on the planet. This place is best experienced on a group, take a drink and pick up that pain brush. There's a descent selection of pottery to choose from: mugs, goblets, plates, dinosaurs, you get the picture. Oh yeah, picture frames too. But the best part is waking by the storefront during the week to see what items are on the "Table of Shame." These are the unclaimed rejects. Some are real lookers, others you can tell the parent was too embarrassed to have that pottery made by little Madison or Jake in their home. But hey, stick a dollar, or not, in the jar and take one of those ceramic misfits home wit you! read more

BYOB. Need I say more? I went with my friend and we ended up staying for a few hours. We both painted starry starry night so we brought a photo to help us out. I picked a 6x6 trivet and my friend did a small plate. Prices were fair. The girl who was working that night was very helpful and refilled our paint as the night went on. Recently, I reached out regarding me and my family's second unpleasant experience at Doin' Dishes - Montclair, NJ. On our first visit, the employee who was there during our reservation (03/25) was not very friendly. I don't know what I was expecting, but she was very serious and we did not feel very welcomed as she explained all of the instructions. We made the best of it, and I chalked it up to them having an "off" day. During our second visit (04/16), we received less than friendly service again. We were the first reservation for the day, and the employee seemed annoyed by our arrival. She was moving some already made ceramic pieces to a table outside, but we entered the store and greeted her. She appeared less than happy and proceeded to turn the lights on. We arrived at about 12:05 pm, so I'm not sure why this wasn't done already. My brother said something along the lines of "we can just go to the same table as last time" and the employee quickly snapped at him. She said he needed to wait until she reviewed all of the reservations for the day before he could be seated, but it was the way she said it that really made me uncomfortable. Afterwards, whenever we needed additional colors she also seemed annoyed and standoffish. It made me feel uncomfortable to ask, and I noticed she'd keep her back turned a lot, so as to not look available. I'm eager to pick up my pieces, and never return here again. I've worked in retail and customer-service based industries for most of my life, and this is unacceptable. This is the kind of place where adults or children may need guidance and instructions, especially if it's their first time. I am especially surprised this kind of customer service is acceptable in an area like Montclair. I paid about $245 for this experience for my family and myself, so the least this place can do is provide a good attitude and welcoming atmosphere from their staff members. read more

They are glazed to give them a shine and finish 5. Pick up is a week from the date you painted The shop is cute and cozy. We called last minute to save a table for 3 and managed to get it. I say fun and not fantastic because I had to be crafty and get messy when I was hoping I could just pay off a small child to do this ceramic thing instead. I wanted to pick up my order and called around 6 to find out what time they closed. When the lady said seven I advised her I would be on my way, but my drive was about half an hour. I got there at 6:40 and the place was closed! I saw a lady walk back in the establishment with her son. I had a great time here with my best friend. We had dinner reservations down the street afterwards, so it was the perfect spot to hang out just the two of us beforehand. We picked out pieces, selected paint, then sat down and got to work while we sipped our wine and snacked on pastries from the Parisienne bakery down the street. My only criticism is that some of the art supplies need updating. The brushes were old and hard to use and some of the foam pieces were cracked and difficult to work properly. I recently went with my family after school during the week when they have special pricing. The woman who was working (may be the owner) was not the friendliest. We were the only people in the entire shop, maybe for the entire day for that matter and I got the feeling that she didn't want to be bothered with attending to my family. We had to keep asking for more paint colors constantly and waiting each time. Mind you this place charges by the hour to paint. The one special price item that my kids wanted to paint was "out of stock" so we had to choose full price items for everyone. The selection of items to paint was very, very limited and it was difficult to find stuff that each of my children wanted to paint. We have done ceramic painting at a different place before and we had a much better experience. I would not recommend this place for these reasons. read more

Doin' Dishes is a little studio on Church Street. The staff there are very friendly and it's always been very chill when I've gone here. The selection of ceramic pieces may not be a varied as other places, but they are nice. On Tuesday nights, the studio has "Grown-ups Night" and, for a flat fee of $7, you can work on a piece anytime from 6pm to 9pm. Also, they had adult ceramic painting classes at night on Thursdays for $20 (inclusive of studio fee and instruction - ceramic is additional). I haven't tried the night class yet, but I think that's a cool feature about this studio. read more

I had a really good time during the adults night but when I came back to get my dish I on the day they told me to come they were already closed an hour before they were scheduled to. This was really upsetting and inconvenient because I specifically scheduled my time to come pick this up and I have very little free time to come back before I go back to college. I came here with my friend, Sister, niece (6) and nephew (5), and we all had a ball! I made a cool sugar bowl with lid, they made a mug, tile coaster, mermaid and star box. A fun, unique idea for a date. The late hours are quite a plus, since you can stop in after dinner and still get a piece done (at least when I went on Friday and it was open until 11). It does get expensive - my one piece ends up at $34 with the $7/hour time - but you get unlimited paint and a lot of handy tools. I guess I expect a different pricing model, but there was only one table when we got there, so it's plausible that the hourly rate is to discourage squatting and make sure new people can enter and purchase. Echoing others, could be cheaper. Maybe the Tuesday 6-9 deal for $7 would be a better thought if you're going to try this out. Not sure it's my thing, with the limited pottery selection (how many bowls or pots or spoons do I need), but once was fun. read more

So much fun! It doesn't matter your age, painting pottery is fun for the whole family. My husband, mother and I went last night. We sat for over 2 hours and had a blast. They happily give you paper cups for wine and we brought a little dessert and we sipped and sloshed paint. I felt the prices were extremely reasonable (aprox. $15 to $25 for an average peice, plus $7 an hour). The first time we went we didn't make reservations (early summer, so shore season). We were one of only two tables so it was fine. When we went last night (a Saturday evening in October), we didn't have reservations, and the place was jumping. If we would have come 10 minutes later there wouldn't have been a table for us! Next time, we'll make a reservation to be on the safe said. The first time we went, my husband's peice was cracked in the glazing process. It was still, more or less, in one peice (though there were separate peices). They gave us a coupon for him to make another one of the exact same mold for free, but I would have preferred a refund. One note, the music was terrible. It was of the repetitive techno genre and I left feeling as if I had been partially lobotomized. It was definitely something the girl working enjoyed more than any of the patrons. read more

I went with friends the first time and we had a blast ! As someone who doesn't like to go out drinking every weekend, this was definitely a fun atmosphere to go and catch up with my girlfriends. Well, I was so impressed when I got my final product (I painted a small box) that I wanted to take my boyfriend with me because we are always looking for something new and exciting to do. I went in on Friday 7/17/15 and was a a little turned off. We walked in at 9:45 and the woman working there was extremely rude and said "They are no longer seating anyone". All we wanted to do was paint something (it doesn't even take an hour) and I was completely turned off by the attitude we were given. I went on the website later and in very small print it says "Last seating was an hour and a half before closing". It is definitely easy to miss on the website. I would go back but definitely know not to go an hour and a half before closing so I don't have to worry about getting an attitude with the staff. read more

The place is cute in a nice location in Montclair. There are many pieces to choose from with prices in all ranges. You are able to choose your brushes (as many as you need) and the paint selection is organized. There are stencils available for use. From here it goes downhill. There were two young women running the shop on a Sunday along with 2 kids, one about 7 and the other around 3. The kids were chasing each other and were acting like.....kids....which made for a chaotic atmosphere. We did not feel relaxed at all while painting. Also, the employees were not very helpful. They did not instruct us in procedures. We had to go to them for extra paint; no one came to us to see how we were doing. My next ceramics adventure will be somewhere else. read more

Being new to Montclair, I must say I see myself and my family becoming regulars ! Just happened to be strolling the town this past Sunday and came across this place. After lots of sugar from the candy store around the corner it was a God send. Although every table was filled the girls working made a way to squeeze my two little rascals and myself in to paint. I know I probably drove them crazy with the millions of questions I had but super grateful for all the help I received. Worst customer service experience I have had in a long time! I came here with my pregnant wife and her pregnant friend and we were treated horribly by the manager. We had a reservation for 9pm and it was very obvious that the manager wanted to leave although they don't close until 11pm. She shut off the music and gave a huge attitude when we weren't sure how the process worked. We ended up leaving and won't ever be back. If I owned this place, I would be embarrassed having someone like this manager working for me. read more

I had my birthday party here and had a blast.The staff was not only helpful and nice, they let me play my ipod for the party! On Tuesday's it's ladies night, 7 dollar flat fee(unlimited time) for painting and the cost of the piece. It's usually 7 dollars per hour plus the price of the piece. This place is great for adults and kids. They have packages for kids birthday parties. If you are looking for something crafty to do without all the mess or paint cost, this is the perfect place, they provide everything for you. read more

I've been to other painting places for parties, or just to drop in and paint, and all were much more customer friendly. The employees circulated around the room constantly to see who was in need of more paint and also had the artistic abilities to offer pointers to customers on various techniques to make their pieces better. The women that work here are very rude and unhelpful. I was there with my child and they were not busy at all, one group of 3 campers and 2-3 other small groups. I was approached fairly quickly when we walked in and given instructions to pick pieces and paint colors. However, they did not do a good job out pointing out the color tiles on the wall to pick colors, they pointed at the shelves of paint bottles by the register. My son picked up 1 or 2 of the paint bottles to look at as we were picking colors, and the girl got annoyed and finally pointed out the tiles on the wall and told my son to put the paint back. We took a table as another group of 2 walked in. The girl then proceeded to help the new group before us, bringing them their pottery pieces, brushes and paints well before us. I then had to track her down any time I needed anything. The woman helping the camp group was loud and snippy with the campers, constantly telling them no, no, no! For the prices paid, I would expect better service and a better attitude. read more

I was there yesterday for a birthday party for about thirteen 10 year old little girls. They had everything set up nicely for the party - it was organized well. The party included a painted plate for the birthday girl that everyone signed. The only complaint I had was the woman running the party was clearly annoyed by the children. She was very abrupt with them at times and I can see her attitude while she watched them. It was apparent she was watching the clock and wanted them out of there. read more

Awful experience with my daughter and her visiting grandparents! To start with, the hostess/salesperson rudely told us to 'not touch' the figures we were choosing to paint as we were looking at them (not touching anything!). She seemed exasperated when we asked for paint refills. But the worst part was the pricing: she did NOT tell us that in addition to paying for the piece you paint, they charge $7 per hour per person. My daughter painted one piece, my mom did another one and I helped with both - the result was $66 for 2 small pieces over a little more than an hour. The sales lady admitted she 'probably' did not tell us about the policy - she ended up taking off $10, not very graciously and only after she double-checked that a tiny printed sign did not actually mention the price per person policy. I don't mind paying for a service if I know in advance what it is, but in addition to the outrageous price, the lack of transparency and plain rudeness made me never want to go there ever again. read more

I'm assuming the owner, who is apparently always stuffing her face with food, must not like children in any way. She was rude and extremely sarcastic with the kids. If she is going to hold a business that involves painting products - she should learn how to communicate with not just adults but with children too. My girlfriends and I had such a great time here on a Tuesday night during which, like a previous reviewer stated, you pay a flat rate of $7 plus the cost of the piece you select. There are a large variety of pottery pieces to choose from. I painted a square platter, my one girlfriend a large mug, and my other girlfriend a child's dish. The staff was very helpful in getting us set up and helping us choose our colors. My girlfriends and I then enjoyed chatting, painting, and drinking (It's BYOB!!!) the evening away. We then got to pick up our pieces a week later and they looked great!!! We will definitely return. read more
