We had a great experience with Dogs Downtown and Sophia. Our Cavapoo puppy was biting a lot and generally not very well behaved. We did a consult with Sophia to describe the issues and decided on the two week board and train since we live in DC. We checked in as we got close to the end of week one and Sophia told us Cooper had made tremendous progress and wasn't sure he needed the second week. We really missed him so we picked him up and she was right! Our puppy is so much calmer and well behaved after just one week. We plan to keep up our training with and may do another board and train as he gets older. We highly recommend Dogs Downtown and Sophia.

I gave the facility 2 stars only because they took my pup at the last minute . I was hopeful for a better experience but sadly was disappointed. After leaving my pup their for 5 days due to me being a 24 hour in home care provider I needed the help with a new client put on my schedule. I called every day checking on him. On Monday I called that morning to check to see how his food was doing and him they told me he was great and actually one of the staff favorite . Later that afternoon I got a email asking to sign forms for if anything happened to my pup while staying there which I understand these forms need to be signed but 20 minutes after signing them I got a call about sores on my dogs face which he definitely didn't have when I called the morning of or the day before nor did he arrive in such manner. They then sent me photos of the sores which looked like he was kicked in the face once I actually picked him up the following day shortening his stay. The young man at the reception tried to say it was from him chewing his bone which was not true Not only when I picked him up was i charged for a wellness check that they should've been responsible for since it happened in their care. But my pup whose only 2 years old friendly, loving and has never been sick came back with a bad cough. I then took him to my own vet that confirmed he had kennel cough and that wherever he had been sleeping was not being probably sanitized. I feel it is my fault that I didn't do deeper research into this place before bringing him here. The young man referred my dog as a rescue dog on too many occasions while speaking that Monday it raised much concern for me which is why I cut his boarding short. I've had my pup since he was 6 weeks old he is not aggressive and can be a bit needy with wanting attention but overall loving and given love at all times. In regards to finding somewhere for your dog to board when you go out of town I would not recommend them at all.

Sophia I did not use any tactic to get the price lowered you called me on the phone and told me that I would be at the $55 rate because I was a return customer, the new employee that you referring to is Sheppard who was there since September when we started training. we boarded our dog in December so I hardly consider that a new employee and he fully agreed with me on the phone regarding the price, he was only following policy.According to David my dog was not special needs he said the dog was very trainable and not aggressive. This was the flyer that I received after I picked my dog up after boot camp, the revised flyer was shown to me after we picked up our dog the second time.By the way when I was reading your reply the person that was riding with me in the car when you called heard our entire conversation on speaker and will back me up on what you stated.

My golden-doodle puppy is a bit of a handful and a little stubborn but since we have started working with Alexa she has shown tremendous progress. Alexa listens to our concerns and immediately starts to think about workable solutions that fit our family's environment. Our pup came back from a week of excellent boarding and training a better version of herself. Highly recommend!

My dogs first boarding experience was two months ago. My husband and I had a travel delay in Paris, and were not going to be able to pick up our dog until the following day because our flight was rescheduled. I made an international call to inform them, however they said that he could not stay an extra night...thankfully my brother lives an hour + away was able to pick him up. This added another 2 hours of driving to our trip after traveling for over 24 hours. My brother also told me they originally brought out the wrong dog to him. After my dog was settled back home, I looked at the receipt and medical records. They were suppose to give him his influenza #2 of the series but it was documented as he received influenza #1. In shock since they had his medical and vaccine records, I called them and they said it was incorrectly documented, and they did credit us which I appreciated. His most recent visit is the most disturbing. Over the July 2nd weekend, with heat index over 100, my dog came home with the pads of his back paws burned. We noticed as soon as he got out of Pender a limp in his back legs. My husband went back inside to ask if he had any accidents or hurt himself, had they noticed him limping? The answer we got was that he got 5 walks a day and they didn't notice him limping once. Therefore I assume they didn't give him any attention or they just didn't care. When we got in the car, my husband looked at our dogs paws and immediately my dog pulled back his back legs and whimpered. The pictures don't do it justice, but it appears he was left out on the hot turf or pavement. It doesn't take long for the pads to burn from the heat of summer as most dog owners know & I never thought this would happen at a boarding facility. My dog is now limping, licking his burns and my husband has to take off work to take him to the vet. We wanted to love pender retreat as much as we love our vet at Pender Fairfax and the convenience of the retreat to the airport but after this we will be looking to board our dog elsewhere.

Our second dog was symptomatic a couple days after that. I contacted Pender and at first received a generic response wishing us well and an empty offer for us to keep them updated. When I did respond that the second dog was sick and it was upsetting that there was exposure that caused them both to be sick, I received a neutral response essentially explaining how contagious the illness was and the general manager shaking off any responsibility. I am beyond upset and disappointed that this is the response provided by a vet run facility. Our pets are our family and I expect them to be well taken care of while at Pender. We were never warned of any outbreak and they really didn't care when we alerted them. We are still struggling with sleepless nights as the dogs continue to wretch through recovery and Pender didn't even give the courtesy of a response when we expressed our situation. We acknowledged that things happen and no facility can prevent an outbreak but how they handled the situation was completely unacceptable. Fortunately northern Virginia has a lot of options when you need to board your pet. Please look to a place that will protect your pet and keep them safe, you won't be guaranteed that here. The staff is incredibly loving and communicates well with the pet owners. The dogs are kept on a strict schedule of playing in the communal playroom, getting walks, napping, eating meals, and going to sleep at night. I think the schedule really helps the dogs know what to expect at any time during their stay. I recommend having your dog go for a few days / half days of daycare prior to the first boarding visit as it helps the dog become familiar with the establishment, the routines and to know that they'll eventually go home again. I can't say enough about the staff! They're all very caring and pass along important information as well as comments about your dog that make you realize how much they interact and care about each and every dog in their care. I only wish I had found this establishment years ago!

I can attest to the fact that the staff goes above and beyond in caring for the dogs. They provide for them, what they need personally and treat them like their own. My dog always gets excited as we drive down the street to Dog Tales and can't get out of the car fast enough to get inside. I often look at the pet cam to see what's happening. So often, the staff is petting, hugging, and playing with the dogs. It truly is peace of mind for me to know that leaving my dog at this daycare is like leaving her with family. She is always well taken care of and I will always be grateful that I was fortunate enough to find Dog Tales.

From the initial consult with Kenzie, we felt very comfortable with how she approached training and her experience. When Charlie came back after 4 weeks, it was such a big change! We take her on long walks, she joins us at restaurants and events around the neighborhood, and overall is a much better behaved dog without losing her personality. We loved that she was taken in as a member of the family during her "boarding school," and they provided regular photos and updates on her progress throughout. She returned to us her same happy, sweet self in the house, but basically a new dog on leash! The Controlled K9 team trained us on how to continue her training, and remained super responsive to our follow up questions.
