Plain Pizza Slice and Pepperoni Pizza Slice
Meredith C.

Doggie's is geared towards beer, shots, and a variety of coffee like liquor mashups. However, we ordered a couple of cocktails and they figured it out and the drinks were fine. The food situation is very limited but offered until close (2pm). We tried the pizza and a hot dog, both which were actually solid and sharply priced at $2 per slice and $3 for a hot dog. The service was prompt and friendly. The setting is "dive bar" but clean and there are a lot of barstools and booths, rather than tables. Additionally, there was a band which plays sets in a different section from the bar and tables so you could actually hold a conversation, if desired. We will have to come back in the Summer with our dog. Dogs are allowed outside.

Outdoor area with corn hole

Fun college atmosphere with indoor and outdoor space. There's picnic tables, metal small tables plus wood benches around the cornhole, pizza station and outdoor bar. Lots of fun in great weather and the pizza is good. Not NJ/NY pizza good but Pennsylvania good. Inside it is dark with some limited tables and lots of standing room so I'm sure it's packed during peak periods in the colder weather. This was move in weekend and parents were there drinking to the new year!

Relive your college days at Doggies. A short wait and a scan of our IDs and we were in. It's literally what you remember from you college days...the smell, the cheap beer, the drinking food and people just having fun. They sat us in the back and gave us a block of wood with red on one side and green on the other. We determined that you put the green up to signify that when the wait staff walked by, they could be certain they were actually ignoring you. When our very nice server finally arrived they get right down to business and ask for your credit card...then your order. The beer arrived in about 15 min, the food about another 20 min later. This place is not fine dining so sit back, relax and enjoy...it's really just how Doggie's is. A two person band arrived and played decent music. Huge outdoor area with heaters as well. The beer was ok and enhanced by its delivery in plastic cups. The only thing colder than the beer was the food. The food is best described as being close to what your friend's Mom would bring down to the basement when you all dropped over at their house in high school trying to hack into the cable movie channels. It gets a solid 2-Stars....but wait a second....what dive college bar would you EVER go to with a higher score. It's a DIVE bar and, honestly, a must visit when on the Penn State campus. Have fun! You'll have it at Doggie's.

Cool layering of ketchup and mustard but it's microwaved.

Doggies cafe is not for dogs. They only want you and your dog when it is dead. Got turned away at 7 PM.

Terrible grouchy owner, and bouncers look miserable and are disrespectful. Just go to Champs Downtown and save yourself the time AND money.

Best bar downtown with a great atmosphere and great live music. The beer is cheap and the vibe is unmatched for an outdoor experience.

Besides the outdoor space, they also have a covered outside area that suited many in our group as the sun was beating on us.

A classic American lunch special that made me feel guilty for paying so little for such a good…read moremeal. Preface: This is only about the burger lunch special. I don't drink alcohol so I can't speak to their bar or other food. 5/5 Food: where to start with the burger- its thick patty has a great crisp outside and medium inside and is graced by nicely cooked bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and a proper amount of sauce. The fries are classic, semi mush-semi crisp fries with coarse grained salt. The meal with a delicious burger that outdoes any other I've had in state college, even those that cost close to $20. Walking out the door, the meal (fries, burger, drink) cost 8.05, and I was happy to leave a larger than 20% tip to make it $10 even. I challenge you to find a better burger in state college, regardless of price. Honestly, my MBA-trained senses obsessed over what their business model might be and I'm hoping that it was providing enough for the owners and staff. 3.5/5 Service: Friendly. It was really busy when we were there and it was a tad slow, but we also had a group that came in at different times. 4/5 Ambiance: nice-ish college bar inside, clean bathrooms. Only complaint is that the booth table was too tall for the chairs, I felt like I would have been better suited to kneel to eat my burger than sit (I had one friend who did kneel to meet the height of the table) Tl;DR Excellent burger; confusingly great value.

Second time here and I'm more practical with expectations. The sandwiches are as expected…read more I had fried chicken sandwich. For $3.50 you can get a million broken fries ( no fork) and for us the ketchups were all empty. It was funny watching other patrons track down ketchup. Seating is Lord of the Rings style, but you know that going in. Solid and expectations met, as 9 pm approaches, groups start coming as a changeover to a bar happens.

These days I live in California, but every time I'm back home, I make it a point to stop in for a drink and a trip down memory lane. I met up with a few of my high school buddies on a Wednesday night while the students were away, so it wasn't packed but that actually made for a more relaxed night. The staff was upbeat and welcoming, and you could just tell everyone behind the bar was having a good time. There was a live acoustic band playing (though I didn't catch the name), which added a great vibe to the evening. The Phyrst is known for its nightly live music. The bar has been completely renovated since my time working there, and I have to say, the new layout is a huge improvement. It flows better and definitely handles a crowd more comfortably on busy nights. I even had the chance to chat with some of the bartenders and share a few stories from my time behind the bar. It's crazy how much has changed and how much has stayed the same. The Phyrst remains one of the most iconic bars in State College and has been a go-to spot for generations of Penn Staters. Whether you're a student, alum, or just passing through, it's a must-visit.
