A fun bar to visit with friends while in State College! We were there on a Saturday night, and while there were a lot of 21+ students, we saw some parents too. I loved the nostalgia, vibes, and cool decor especially the colored lights strung over the bar, the photo of Bill Pickles on the back wall, and the bathrooms with a history of names on the walls. The Pickle Back Shot, a shot of whiskey accompanied by pickle juice, was fun and unique. The pickle juice chaser added a cool element to the shot of whiskey. I also loved their Frozen Kentucky Coffee which was almost a dessert. Plus, I got to keep the souvenir plastic cup! There were also lots of attentive bartenders and a smaller bar, in addition to the main bar, which made it easier to get drinks/food. If you looking for a great lunch place in State College you need to go here! When we fly in for a football game we always stop here for lunch! We try to sit outside when we can. They actually changed up the menu recently for the good! Starting out with drinks, they have ice cold beers as always, they added Margaritas! I'm a Margarita and tequila guy. They actually have very good no additive tequila, tequila Ocho! Always ask for No Additive Tequila! The menu changed to include BBQ, now living in the south I was skeptical. I think this used to be a Rite Aid when I was at Penn State lol. Anyway it's a cute little spot right near Hammond building. If it had been here in my student days I prob would have come a lot. We had no problem getting in and getting seats at the bar. I saw there was a $3 ice tea haha and I really wasn't wanting to drink cheap liquor - but my arm was twisted by the price - and by the awesome bartender wearing a Sixers jersey. We like this place but unfortunately don't end up staying because it is consistently packed and we can't get a seat at the bar. There was a group doing a Christmas pub crawl so they were taking up a lot of the bar. We ended up at a table and had very good service. We ordered a glass of red and a lemondrop martini plus the kale salad special and a tuna salad BLT sandwich. We really enjoyed the sandwich because it was not made with a ton of mayo. Perfectly good spot near Penn State open on Sundays! A big plus! I feel like I was the odd person out with my order, and would go back again for something other than the salad. My mediterranean salad was good in fact! Lots of quinoa, fresh veggies and a good dressing. Only thing was the chicken wasn't seasoned well, but I did enjoy my salad after a weekend of toil on the body. The prices were fantastic and the wine they had was on a deal and quite good. The bartender here knows how to make a VERY good drink. Try the whiskey sour or the old fashioned. We all had burgers. Very fair priced and were solid. We all agreed we would try them all again and recommend them (I don't know if it was a special burger night or not, but they ranged from your classic style to one with gravy.....they were all very good from our group). The fries seemed to have a special seasoning on them (like sour cream and onion) which was different (people all liked them...IMO....just a touch salty, but I'm not a chef). It was trivia night and it was a good time. Age range in this place was all over the place. There were college students along with people 65+ and everyone in between. Went to State College on a Sunday for a hockey game. We decided to try pickles out for some lunch. We sat at the bar. The bartender that waited on us was the sweetest kid. I started with a $15 espresso martini it was pretty darn delicious!! I do have to say this was my 1st ever warm espresso martini they are normally cold, but it did not disappoint!! Of course, my friend then got a complementary plate of some dill pickles, which we loved. For lunch, we got the smoked beef brisket melt for $15, which came with a bag of chips. My friends got a special of the Sunday fare menu, which we were told Sunday fare menu the items are most likely never come back. They both got the Chopped Italian salad for $13 and a starter of the fried pickles for $12 served with Jon Jon sauce, which I have no idea what it was, but it was amazing!!! We did also get a side of their homemade ranch. However, I did not care for it. I don't normally like heavy based dill ranch. The salads were a really good size, the atmosphere was awesome. Favorite bar in state college! Prime location, excellent playlist and good food. Drinks are decently priced and bartenders are fast and usually very friendly! Food is typical bar food but a few menu items Stick out - FRIED PICKLES. Get!!!!!! They take dill pickles.. the longer ones that are cut (instead of the sliced) and lightly and perfectly fry them. They are then served with this yummy spicy yet savory sauce (kind of like a chipotle mayo but not really). To die for. I crave them in my sleep!! Next the fried green beans - so random but so delicious! These are a bit spicy because they have pepper flakes on them but they are amazing. Lastly not a staple but very good - the fried mozzarella sticks. Standard mozzarella fried and shareable. Only downside was when we visited this weekend, my friend who is a service member asked for the military discount on our bar tab ($100+) and the bartender said "uh sorry that's only on food" and then when we mentioned the advertised late night happy hour (10pm on) that was listed for Saturday night the same guy said "haha no that's obviously not on home football game weekends". Came here last night after renovations had Pickles closed for two weeks. I always come here with my boo when I'm in town and it's always fantastic. Great for beers and shots but when it's more mellow the bartenders can still make killer cocktails. We had some wonderful mules and sipped the night away. Great place to just hang out but it gets pretty busy during the school year. Be prepared for large crowds and a rowdy bunch. Better earlier in the evening if you like a more relaxed environment. BY FARRR the worst dining experience at state college to date. I walk in and pour a water with my family just to be confronted and accused of underage drinking. I was kicked to the curb hungry and parched without any closure on why I was escorted out. If you're visually impaired, mentally challenged, and just straight up hate your life, apply for a job at pickles, as they will hire you without question. I whole heartedly believe my 3 year old cousin's lemonade stand is a better run establishment than bill pickles, and most likely brings in a better income. Upon searching for an ideal place to watch the Steelers game, I decided, even though it catered more to Eagles fans, to watch it here. The guy at the door was real cool and texted me right when a seat was available. My table was all by itself with its own flat screen. One of the bartenders who had Eagles gear on was real cool and chatted me up about the game. You could tell he was a diehard football fan as he took an interest in my team and how we were doing. About a half hour later when my appetite started to build, I ordered a salad and a cup of clam chowder soup that was absolutely delicious and had a nice thick consistency. The meal was even more enjoyable after a Steelers win. After the game, I ordered their two soft pretzels with mustard sauce, which were very satisfying. As I was leaving, I chatted with two of the staff over politics, guns, inept governors and mayors, and annoying fans from other cities. So all in all, I really enjoyed my experience here. Echoing some other reviews here. I was visiting over a weekend. Bartenders were extremely creepy and made inappropriate comments to members of our group and the women around us. After 4-5 drinks over several hours (I'm no saint!) I went to the bathroom, when I came out i was told by a bouncer waiting outside I had to leave the bar. No warning and given no explanation. On the way out they overcharged us, and we didn't realize until the next day when we compared receipts because we were still too busy wondering why we were asked to leave to begin with.
