Robert is very personable and never made me feel like I had messed up my dog's training (or lack thereof) previously, or that I was a bad owner for that (like some trainers can). He immediately began working with them and me, thoroughly explaining the why behind everything we did/will do to address their behavior concerns. I really enjoy that his approach is based in ABA and operant/classical conditioning instead of dominance/alpha methods. After just two session, we have had our first real loose leash walks, the barking at the doorbell has decreased and we have a plan in place to continue to eliminate it that is progressing well so far! And one of my dogs has finally learned "stay" for the first time. Our first session, there was a cancellation due to a snowstorm, and they were very communicative and had my session rescheduled within the next 2 days! Each class is recorded so you can reference them later, and their post-class emails also give you homework for the week and great resources to use if you want to learn more about topics discussed. I really like that the instructors have done tons of research on dog behavior and training and cite their sources--it's both fascinating (from an intellectual standpoint) and comforting (from a nervous dog mom standpoint) to hear the research and science behind their methods. They teach a positive reinforcement only method, which I really appreciate after previous experiences with other trainers who advocate things like prong collars. The emphasis is on building a relationship with your dog through understanding the way their brains work and how best to communicate with them. We found Urban K-9 through a neighbor, who couldn't recommend Natasha enough. Our neighbor has a dog who was scared around kids, and Natasha helped the dog go from reactive to calm in difficult situations with kids. We had a similar issue with our dog, so we reached out. Natasha helped us with a few different things, including our dog's reactivity around kids/strangers, our dog's tendency to bark at the door and jump on strangers to greet them. Natasha helped us understand our dogs psychology, and was able to help us see where our dogs behavior was coming from. For instance, we didn't realize that barking at kids was a sign of the dog being scared, rather than being angry/aggressive. The main take-away was that the more our dog feels like she can rely on her owners to take her through a difficult situation safely (aka not let a random stranger pet her, but be her leader/protector), the less our dog would feel like she needed to take care of the situation herself (aka bark/lunge/etc.). Natasha shared a lot of concrete steps and methods to implement in order to create a more clear dynamic between us and our dog. We learned a number of things, including how to get out of a difficult situation, how to desensitize our dog to her fears, how to train patience, how to show stronger leadership with leash walking, and so on. We just completed our 4 sessions with Jason and in a little over a month (each session is spaced…read moreout a week or two apart) and my now 6 month old is already 1) crate trained 2) walking SO much better on a leash and learning to be 3) calm on cue and 4) recall. When I first got my puppy, he was 3 months old and Shiba owners keep telling me only to use positive reinforcement training. I did my research and decided that I will look for a trainer who employs balanced training methods especially since my goal is to be able to walk with my dog off-leash. (More on this later.) Because he is the perfect balance of letting dogs be dogs, while still creating structure to set dogs up for success. Setting up a dog for success, for starters, mean that you are training them to be calm, that they are being trained not to get excited when a stranger or another dog or a bird is within the vicinity. That means I can't just introduce my pup to other pups on the street to say 'hi'. Pet parents, there is a proper way of introducing dogs, so please please be respectful of other dogs and owners. Jason breaks down his training into small baby steps so you can easily follow the training - when yo add distractions, duration, etc. I have learned so much from Jason - he is very passionate about what he does and he will make sure your dog gets what is needed. He goes above and beyond to train your dog and keep you and your dog safe. Now, a note on off-leash dogs. There is a lot of discipline, work and trust involved here and unless you have control over your dog and are confident that you can call your dog back despite distance and distractions, don't do it. We completed 4 training sessions with Jason for our senior Great Dane to work on separation anxiety, resource guarding, staying in place, recall, and proper walking etiquette. Having a big dog, we knew it was important to have complete control over her in all situations but were worried she was too old to learn any habits learned from her previous owner. Boy were we wrong! Our first session focused on Jason getting to know Lola and what brought us to training. From there, we worked on learning her body language and having her respond to us when we say her name. Next week focused on putting her in her crate and working on separation anxiety. This helped tremendously. Our dog used to howl, bark, and whine for hours in the crate. Now, she enjoys her crate and is calm when she enters, and can settle down quickly. The next session focused on putting Lola in "place". This was done through positive reinforcement and rewarding her for her correct behavior. Lola can now go to place when someone comes to the door and does not leave until released. Our final 2 sessions worked on proper walking etiquette and recall. We've noticed Lola stays by our side more closely and doesn't pull us when walking and also uses the bathroom very quickly when we go out for our nightly walk. Previously, she would only go in the park or very specific spots of grass. The recall session was fun and educational. We are seeing improvements with Lola coming back to us when called. Jason does a great job checking in throughout training and is always open to any questions you might have. He's kind and patient with his customers and their dogs, Lola gets so excited when she sees him. We're so happy we chose Jason as our trainer and are thrilled with Lola's improvement throughout the training sessions.
