It's important for me to make progress with my dog, so I Googled alternate options and stumbled upon Alex's page. I called him on a Friday and he picked up the phone right away. We spoke for a while about my needs and he came out the following Tuesday for what was supposed to be a 2-hour visit. I fell in love with him immediately, he is not only so personable and likable on his own, but he really takes the time to LISTEN to what you need and work on those things right away. I had mentioned my priorities to my previous trainer, but I found that she was teaching my dog commands that didn't actually accomplish what I was after. In our first meeting, Alex worked on SO MANY of my priorities. He got my dog to go into her crate on command, taught her to "stay," showed me how to "walk with" my dog better on her leash, and (using a 30' leash outdoors) started working on recall with her. We were so immersed in what was going on that Alex started to go a little bit over our time, but he didn't want to stop because we were making such great progress. I told him if he wanted to give me a third hour right then and there that I was prepared to pay for it, and he did!! I learned a lot of things from Alex myself during our first meeting, like how to employ the use of "deltas" (which my old trainer never once mentioned) and how non-verbal cues are arguably more important than verbal ones. Again, my old trainer actually discouraged me from using hand motions, but once incorporating them into my routine I noticed that my dog was much more compliant than she had been. Another positive difference between my old trainer and Alex is he really takes the time to teach you why he's doing what he's doing, and encourages you to participate. My old trainer just taught my dog a command and had me replicate/practice when she left. Alex really makes you feel like you are a part of the teaching process. After our private session Alex recommended some "Small Group Therapy" for my pup. He came at noon on a Thursday to pick up my dog and she proceeded to go on a several-hour outing with his two chihuahuas and a dog he was fostering. The entire time he was out with her he was recording and sharing videos on an iCloud album. It was INCREDIBLE to not only see everything that was happening, but to hear him narrate why he was doing the things he was doing. I could not get enough of his videos and felt like I was there during the session. On top of Alex's excellent communication, punctuality, reliability, friendliness, competency, and effectiveness, his rates are OUTRAGEOUS in the BEST way! I truly believe he is under-charging for his services. I can get three hours with Alex for less than I paid for one hour with my prior trainer, and I feel much better about the work that is done during that timeframe. I adore Alex, and most importantly, what he is doing works. He really gets into the mind of your dog, and has such a wonderful way of connecting with them and their needs. I am elated to keep our work going - my pup has lots more Small Group Therapy outings in her future and it's wonderful that I have the option to use him one-on-one to teach her even more commands in the house. One day I hope to move on from essential commands to more fun ones, like "roll over" or "go get X toy."

Ruby was chosen for me at 4 weeks old by Andres Aportella; owner and head trainer at Pro Canine…read moreCenter in Frenchtown, NJ. To say it was a lengthy search is an understatement. He reached out to his many contacts here in the US and around the world. He turned down a lot of dogs before he chose the one he thought was the best dog for me. Ruby was trained under the watchful eye of Andres and a brilliant young trainer named Chiara Tonelli. She had the difficult task of learning all she could about my disabilities so she could train Ruby to be my service dog. This was no easy task as I have mobility issues due to advanced Parkinson's disease and a variety of neurological problems including a stroke and hearing loss from long Covid. I also suffer from PTSD. Chiara and the team at Pro Canine trained with Ruby and kept me up to date with videos and text messages. I needed training as well and I always came home with videos for reference. They worked hard with Ruby and I. In all of my hours there never once did I see anyone lose their patience, especially with me. I was much more difficult to train than Ruby. I'm a retired engineer so I ask a million questions, compounded by my neurological deficits I was a challenge. Through Chiara's careful consistent tutelage and fantastic dog training skills, Ruby and I learned to communicate, respect and above all trust each other. We succeeded in a way that was beyond my expectations. Because of Andres' and Chiara's amazing work with Ruby and I, I'm getting my life back. Ruby prevents me from falling, helps me up and down stairs, she helps me to navigate the outside world, and now I even go out with friends again. She spends countless hours calmly at my side during my many hospital stays, medical tests and lengthy treatments. She helps me navigate though NYC, including trains, subways, busses and cabs to get to the doctors and hospitals there. She handles all of this as easily as walk to our local park. My ER visits have gone from 1-2 a month to none since Ruby finished her training and has been living with me full time. Ruby's attention to me never wavers, even when people ignore her service vest and pet her or offer her food. Her training is incomparable, having earned her the respect of the K9 officers in the hospital and my local K9 officers (who continually threaten to steal her for the police force). There is a gentlemen living in my neighborhood who is a well respected dog trainer himself. He tried to break Ruby's concentration as a test while speaking with me and she even ignored him. It was no surprise that guessed correctly that she was trained at Pro Canine because of her excellent behavior. Andres and Chiara along with the entire team at ProCanine have my utmost respect and full endorsement. I will forever be grateful, without them I'm not sure I'd be here to write this.

She used to lunge and bark at anything and everything -- other dogs, loud trucks, strangers, even deer! Leigh helped us understand what was going on with Daisy's wiring, and once we addressed her underlying anxiety, she was a different dog. Daisy has learned to get along well with our Maine Coon cats, as well as be polite to guests in our home. The kids love playing games with her, and she is doing so much better on walks now that we learned pattern walking and calming techniques that work in real time. Our pup came to us crate trained, which we loved, but now that she's older and we've built trust, she is able to sleep all night on a bed in our room. I highly recommend Opportunity Barks for compassionate, humane dog training solutions!

The manager at the boarding and training facility has changed in the past year, and unfortunately, our experience under the new management was far below the standards we had previously expected. When we picked him up, he had diarrhea and arrived with a soiled behind -- yet we were never notified of any stomach issues during his stay. He also had a deep scratch across his nose, which we only noticed in the daily photos and had to point out to staff ourselves in order to get him proper care. When we submitted a review after his stay, staff claimed they had informed us about the scratch and that he hadn't had any stomach issues while in their care. Diarrhea is very evident with our white Samoyed, as his fur gets soiled and requires extra cleaning, so their claims felt like gaslighting rather than honest communication. Instead of acknowledging their mistakes or committing to improve, staff told us we were no longer welcome and even blocked our portal login. Their response was dismissive, unprofessional, and demonstrated a complete lack of accountability. For the health and safety of your dog, stay away from Opportunity Barks and their unethical, unprofessional behavior.

I quickly realized how naive I was to think I wouldn't get much out of this training program after the 1st group training class. My puppy George & I did the group puppy foundation classes every Saturday morning for 6 weeks and both of us learned so much! There was just enough 1:1 time, while also having a few other puppies in the class, which I felt was perfect for George to learn in a setting that could be distracting, so he could learn as he would in the "real world." The instructors were SO informative & gave us tips & tricks outside the norm of simple commands, that truly go above & beyond. They showed up for each class with so much positive energy and brought humor into the trainings. I loved OpBarks so much that I ended up enrolling George into the puppy exploration farm school program once he finished the initial group classes. He spent 6 days (in the span of 2 weeks) getting the chance to leave the city life behind and be a "farm dog." I had so much confidence dropping him off each day with the instructors as they radiate their love/care for dogs through every interaction. They ensured George got proper play time, nap time, and training time. I received videos/pictures all throughout the day further confirming that George was having the time of his 5 month old life. And now I'm a happy owner as well, with the way he seems to be a pro with things like leash walking, dropping filthy items from the Philly sidewalks out of his mouth, and recall. I cannot recommend OpBarks (and specifically the trainer Sydney) enough! George & I are so blessed to have come across your training programs.
