I honestly can't say enough good things about DGS! My dog starts whining the second we turn on Cross Street (because he knows where we are going) with pure excitement and when he walks in, they greet him by name and make him feel so welcome. He absolutely loves going, he comes home exhausted every time. One thing that is especially important to me is that he never comes back home sick, which gives me peace of mind sending him. That has happened with other daycares we've tried, and I've heard stories from other people that are terrifying, but nothing to worry about with DGS! We've even moved about 30 minutes away and we still will bring him there for boarding/daycare/grooming. Overall, this place is the best combination of fun, safety, and genuine care. I wouldn't take my dog anywhere else. A special shout out to Felicia, who goes above and beyond every single time. She trims his nails better than anyone else and is always so genuinely happy to see him. The feeling is definitely mutual! You can tell she truly cares about the dogs. Signed up my 12 week Goldendoodle up for their puppy class and sent in all the paperwork showing he had his shots and was clean of any parasites. Unfortunately, the other puppies in the class must have not done the same. Two of the puppies were extremely small for their age and breed (claimed they were 12 weeks), I would guess they were 7 or 8 weeks, and my puppy came home with a parasite, which was Giardia after the FIRST SESSION. I texted the trainer to let her know that one of the other puppies has parasites and to let the other owners know, and she had the manager call me back. The manager tried to made it out to be that MY dog came with the parasite to the class and was the problem. I had proof from the vet my dog was parasite free. No offer to refund the rest of the class either. Very disappointed since they came highly recommended and I would have continued with training, play classes, etc. Do not risk your dog at this facility. read more

I brought my 8 month old golden in for Puppy Swims as we'd been trying to get him used to swimming for months with no luck. The entire visit was super efficient - Todd brought him into the pool and within a few minutes he had gone from thrashing around in the pool to paddling efficiently and even retrieving toys. I can't believe how much progress he made in just one short session! We'll be back for sure to continue helping my pup build confidence in the water. read more

We put our 1-year old Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier in their board and train program for 18-days in July. The onboarding process gave us confidence in the program. They had to have our dog spend a day prior to make sure he would adapt properly, the people we dealt with were very pleasant and seemed very professional. We signed up for some extras like walks outside (they do not have an outdoor area which we found odd but we're happy to have outside walk options). We signed up for swim lessons as well. It seemed a bit expensive but professional. We expected regular updates but we had to call a number of times through the 18-days to remind them to just give us an update on how he was doing. When we reminded them they sent a report and pictures or videos of his training. He seemed to be doing pretty well and enjoying the training. When we got our dog back unfortunately our mostly satisfied perception became one of growing concern. Our dog was so matted on his entire stomach that he had to have his entire underside fully shaved. He also had a cough which turned out to be kennel cough (yes he is vaccinated and yes we realize this can still happen). He also though had very soft runny stool which we had tested and he had contracted a parasite there also and was diagnosed with Giardia. I called after the kennel cough was diagnosed and asked about the matted fur and the cough. They told me I should have signed up for brushing or grooming which apparently is an extra service we were not offered when we signed him up. I do think a basic brushing when a dog is there that long is not much to expect. Although Kennel cough is something dogs can catch in any group situation, I feel they should have recognized it and pro-actively contacted us and offered treatment. They did not do that and instead just returned him to us as if everything was great! I feel it is impossible they did not catch the Kennel cough given we paid for a daily one to one trainer to work with him. That person would have heard his voice and cough. And also they should have seen his soft stool. Both of these items as well as the very matted fur should have set off a call to us. Our dog clearly had these issues at the kennel and well before he was returned to us. I then followed up with the Giardia and reported it so they could look out for other dogs. I was told the manager would call me back but never did. Too many red flags here and they brushed off the issues and blamed the matted fur on my not adding on a brushing extra service. Just not acceptable. We will not be boarding our dog at this facility again. read more

My 1 year old muttt, Dancer, has just completed her first training class at Dog Gone Smart- Foundation Agility I. She loved it and always gets so excited as we pull up. Dancer first tried agility at a local dog event and loved it ever since. It's such a great mental/physical exercise that really helps complement the obedience training we are doing on the side. Betsy, the trainer, is wonderful and compassionate and really gets to know your dog's strengths and weaknesses. We would continue through all the classes if it weren't for us moving across the country next month. Hoping to find somewhere half as great to continue her agility training. Dancer also did one swim class a few weeks ago with Pierce. The facilities are sparkling and the pool is so clean I might even join for our next class. Pierce was so wonderful at easing my anxiety as I was nervous since Dancer was petrified of water (baths, faucets, pools, oceans- everything). He did such a wonderful job of encouraging her and getting her to swim 10+ laps- allowing her breaks in between laps. She really liked it and trusted him. 10/10 recommend- wonderful exercise, too. He also took an underwater video of her swimming which was a super cool keepsake. Additionally, I notice some of the reviews are critical of the office staff. We only had positive experiences with everyone we met! read more

I've been using them since they opened; they're working with me on my 4th large golden now, and their knowledge, methods, and flexibility, and empathy are 1 in a million. I used all that they offer from puppy playtime, structured classes, swimming, day care, one on one training at their facility, and home visits to address everything from fear response, anxiety, that one dog who thinks THEY run the show, and basic manners. They know what they're doing, your dog's safety is paramount, they DO have adequate staffing at all times, and they do not expect YOU to do anything, except learn best methods, while your dog learns what's expected of them in a family home. They aren't just spouting a bunch of overwhelming platitudes on what you must and must not do. They understand people are busy, or just "life/reasons" and they don't judge you, they help you. And those breakthroughs when your dog not just gets it, they happily obey, and suddenly that horrible thing your terrific dog was doing..... stops, PRICELESS. I hope this review will prompt you to give Dog Gone Smart a try. My family has used them for 25 years which spanned the life of 3 dogs. 1 family dog, and later 2 dogs which were just mine. They trained, with me, and often without me, kept our dogs when we traveled, sometimes for long periods of time and gave them endless hours of playtime with "friends". All I would have to do in the morning is ask my dog if she wanted to go play with " friends" and she knew what that meant and was instantly excited for the drive there. Oh and maybe I should mention I drive 1/2 hour to get there. the service is that valuable to me. Many, and I mean many of the staff has been the same there for 25 years. The trainer training my dog now, is the same trainer who trained my first dog. I think when you can hold staff in one place for that long, that says a lot about the place/ and the commitment they have to what they do. I'm sure they have bad days but you would never know it. Your always met with a smile and hello and an energetic happy greeting to welcome your pet. My dogs are always well cared for and I leave them each time feeling good about bringing them. The hours are extremely flexible and very generous. You can pick up from daycare into the later evening which many places don't offer at no additional charges. They also provide overnight staff which is another thing not everyplace offers. You want a staff that knows your dog there at night in the event something goes wrong, not just an alarm with a promise help is coming. I can't say enough good things about this doggie facility. Really disappointed. I brought my 2 mini dachshunds there for doggie day care. One is a puppy and I explained that the visit was mostly for socialization. They said they understood that. I asked for a webcam and they told me they didn't have one because their clients didn't want one (really?). I think in this day and age, it's simply not okay to not be able to see your dogs during the day. Then, they told me they'd send me pictures and videos during the day. Never got any. When I arrived, I went to the large windows on the street and tried to peer in (they have all the windows blocked out by cardboard). There, on a ledge by the window were my 2 minis just barely fitting and shaking on the ledge. Perhaps they were there all day with no socialization! Really sad because I was hoping this could be their "home away from home". Not going back. read more

If you are serious about training your dog and looking for a professional facility, do not come here! I signed up for an "expert" level agility class to brush up before competition (despite the instructor never even titled a dog before). The actual competition experience by the instructor didn't bother me as I mainly wanted access to the equipment and figured I can always learn *something*. I spent $200 at the vet to prepare for the class because they have outdated vaccination requirements, in addition to the class fee. Two days before the class, my bitch comes into heat. This should be no big deal and it didn't cross my mind that it was. I have taken classes at several different facilities and various instructors, taken clinics - the rule is universal, bitches in heat must wear panties. I show up to my first class and the instructor sees the panties and immediately freaks out asking if she is in heat. Yes, I reply. She runs to tell the manager (?) and they come and tell me I can't be there with her because "other dogs come in here". And? They keep responding that they have 80 dogs there. And? It can cause a problem for other male dogs if they are intact. So I can't take classes at a *supposedly* professional facility because someone else can't manage their own dog? Why do they have an intact male if they are incapable of handling it? Are they saying their employees aren't skilled enough to manage this with daycare dogs (this was in a training room)? So because other people can't train and manage their dog, it is MY problem! Instead of TEACHING those students and employees how to keep their dog's attention, they just make sure they never have to be around a female in heat. What do these people do outside of the facility? This is a perfect example of what you get with "purely positive" training methods! Your dog will only listen in sanitized environments with no distractions. The instructor actually told me I could not observe the first class at the end of the ring (but outside of the ring) because "it would distract the dogs"! What a disservice to the students! My dog has been in heat, in group stays, sitting only a couple of feet from an intact dog. She has been in classes, in heat, with intact males. This has never been an issue because these were at professional facilities run by knowledgeable people. This place caters to "fur mommies" with marginally trained, if at all dogs. I will also say the place appears dirty and reeks when you walk in the door. The smell is nauseating. I cannot imagine sending a dog there for boarding or daycare. I had heard negative things about this place and I should have believed them! read more

I love this place. Being a first time puppy owner is scary, and this place makes you feel at ease. I had to return to work during the pandemic, because the office reopened, so it was time to think.. what do I do with Bella? I would never ever leave her home alone at such a young age (16 weeks); so I researched some Daycares in the area and stumbled across this one; it's close to my work, so I thought I would give it a chance. Deb has been nothing but comforting at all times, and she never made me feel like I was an overprotective dog owner. I have so many questions, and she is so knowledgeable! On Bella's first day, I called to check in on her and they never made me feel weird about it. I've taken Bella to other facilities closer to where I live, and I will never go back after my experience with DGS. During work, which can be stressful at times, I know Bella is in great hands with great staff, so I don't have to worry about her so much. Sam and Jordan are also nothing but nice and always smiling! They always greet Bella with open arms. I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants their dog to have a great time. Don't leave your dog home alone; bring your dog here and get them socialized with other dogs and with a great staff! I got a new puppy back in April, and I was looking for a place where I could get some puppy classes for my pup and Lee, as Lee has never had a dog before, and I figured getting them both in a class together would be a good idea. I also saw that they have puppy playtime, which I thought sounded like a good idea, so I decided to sign Dibny up for that as well. They have two different levels of puppy play - 8 weeks to 4 months, and 4 months to 10(ish) months. My puppy had an awesome time in the lower level puppy play - it's drop in, three times a week. Socialization is one of the most important things you can do for your puppy, and getting him in these playtimes were really great for him! It helped him almost instantly with bite inhibition, and it provided a great outlet for his puppy energy. I continue to take him to the older puppy play, which is also 3 times a week, but requires signing up in advance. The puppy classes were mostly OK. I'm not sure if it was our instructor, or some of the other attendees, or us, but I felt that we really didn't feel like we got as much out of it as we expected. We had bad luck to be in a class/time of the year with low attendance, so I don't think it helped. I kind of turned Lee off enough that he wasn't interested in signing up for any subsequent classes for now. I feel that we really get more out of the puppy playtimes as it is. I have also done boarding, which is also good, at least as far as I can tell. My puppy loves going there, which means that he's having a great time. I don't really get any feedback on how he was doing. I do really like that they have pickup as late as 11PM, we've had a couple of nights where we've been in the city fairly late, so it's been convenient. Overall I've had a good experience here, and I'm looking forward to taking my pup there again soon! read more

They refused when I asked if I could see where the dogs are kept while they are boarding! Who would leave their pets under such conditions? I wish that I could offer 0 stars to this disgraceful place. Reply to Chris Onthank-- I went into Dog Gone Smart. Indeed the facility smelled. I requested a tour of the boarding areas. Your manager told me that was not possible and I left. How much longer did I need to stay? In addition to this, you may not believe that your facility has a strong dog odor. I was referred to Dog Gone Smart by my vet and it was one of the best recommendations! I have a Jack Russell mix who was so full of energy I had to find somewhere or something to burn it off! My dog loved it from the very first day! While there I watched one of the trainers working with a dog. Not one to waist time, I asked Niki if she would work with Buster. She has done an amazing job!! He listens and I no longer fear that he will bolt out of the house or car. Buster loves Niki and is as excited to see her as he is me. She keeps varying the things she works on and he is never board! When my 12 1/2 year old Bouvier needed physical therapy for severe arthritis, I took her to Dog Gone Smart. Pierce was so gentle with her and he carefully lifted her into the pool. He walked next to her as she swam. My dog loved it!! Pierce made sure that she took a rest periodically. Working with my second Aussie at Agility training and am very pleased. I found DGS by following the instructor that worked with me for 11 years with my prior Aussie. Betsy is astute at identifying the nuances of both dog and trainer behavior necessary for successful agility training. It would be nice if the training room was a little larger to accommodate more open space and more equipment, but the quality of the instruction is excellent. Classes are at an appropriate level as the dog progresses and our two year old enjoys every class. read more

This place is great. We used to bring our puppy here religiously for "puppy playtime"-- for 45 minutes, twice a week, she got to romp around with puppies who are size appropriate. At $8 a session it was a steal. Not only for her, but for me-- being in a room full of puppies is just about the best thing ever. (Sometimes I think about just going and paying the 8 bucks to watch the puppies..) Now that she's grown, we bring her here for day care on occasion. I wish we could bring her here on a more regular basis, but hey, we're students. At $36, day care here is a little more expensive than what we're used to, but you get more bang for your buck. 1.) The dogs have scheduled breaks in between, but they essentially play all day. In contrast, one day care we took our dog to was only $25, but "playtime" ended by 4 PM on weekends and all dogs were crated until their owners picked them up. 2.) You can arrange for late pickup, as late as 11 PM. Super easy to arrange-- they just make sure there's a credit card on file since there's no one manning the front desk if you come late. We usually take our dog on a weekend day when we're out all day, so it's nice to be able to finish dinner properly instead of rushing to meet a pick up deadline. And like I mentioned in point 1, the dogs play all day, so even when day care technically ends at 4 or 6 or 7 PM, our dog is still playing when we pick her up at 9 or 10 or 11 PM. read more

Excellent training and the best dog daycare you will find ever! I'm a neurotic doggy mom and call several times a day to make sure that my Lilly is ok, especially when she hasn't been for a while. They never act like I'm crazy for checking on my dog and I appreciate it. They are thorough about ensuring that all dogs attending have had all of their shots including Bordetella. This gives me peace of mind that Lilly can play safely with her friends and she will come home healthy. After a long cold winter, my little doggie Dixie was in serious need of grooming. Her hair was too long and matted and she was a dirty mess. Sandra at Dog Gone Smart in Norwalk did a fantastic job! Not only did Dixie look great, she was suddenly full of energy - running around like a happy little puppy! Hard to believe considering she is 12 years old. The training itself was okay, but the loss in stars is due to the poor quality in organization/communication. I registered my puppy here for Puppy Class on a particular day/time that worked with my schedule. A few days before it started they call me to say only one other person signed up for that session, so I could either change the day or just do two condensed sessions with the other person and their puppy, so I chose the latter. The next week they call me to say that I have to switch to a different day, which I do begrudgingly. I go and it's a repeat of the class I already took last week, which they didn't tell me it would be. I had to miss a class because I was on vacation (which is a big reason why I chose the original day) and couldn't make it up before my puppy had aged out of that class. The actual classes were fine, although we didn't really learn anything. It was more informational about what you should/shouldn't do. There was no new information than I had already read in a training book I had bought before getting my puppy. The best class was the one where they had a mini agility course set up as my dog really enjoyed that. The most beneficial was having play time at the beginning/end of class so my puppy could socialize with the other puppies. I also went to a few Puppy Playtime sessions. I could only go on Sunday afternoons because I work full time and all of the other sessions were in the middle of weekdays. For Sunday's you have to pre-register, which I always did. One time they called me about an hour ahead of time to say that not enough people had signed up so it was canceled. That was okay, but I had prepaid for the session and they never refunded me or offered to put that money towards a different session. The sessions are good so he can socialize with other puppies, but a lot of times other owners would bring their children with them. The kids are not supposed to play with the dogs because the whole point is so the dogs can play with each other, but of course they did not listen. Inevitably the kids would call my puppy over to them and play with him, which meant he was not getting in any play time with the other dogs. I felt awkward saying anything to them or their parents, as I felt it was on the trainer or the kids' parents to tell them to not interfere. Instead I would have to pull my puppy away and try to not-so-subtly say "come on, you're here to play with the other dogs" Overall, I would not really recommend coming here. I have started taking my puppy somewhere else for the next level of obedience classes and I am already 10x more impressed with the organization and professionalism of the other training place. read more

I brought my dog here for the first time a couple of weeks ago. The daycare is free for the first day, which is great. I dropped my dog off at about 7:15 as was recommended by the staff during our initial meeting. Someone took my dog into the play room and then I stood by awkwardly for someone to explain what I needed to do/what she would be doing. No such luck. I left and cried when I saw my dog looking out the window at me, but I had to leave straight away to get to work. I was so worried about her all day! When I got out of work I raced to go pick her up and asked the receptionist if I could look in to see how she was doing before they brought her out. She said they were in the back "napping". I heard at least ten dogs barking ferociously in the back. I could only imagine how scared my poor little girl was with all that noise, being locked in a strange crate for the first time. No one told me she would be crated. I NEVER crate her and that entirely defeats the purpose of bringing her to daycare. Someone brought my dog out and she ran to me as fast as she could. I asked the daycare worker if my dog liked it and she said, "Oh yeah she was good", and then turned around and left. The receptionist said nothing, so I just took my dog and got out of there. My dog cried the ENTIRE way home from Norwalk to Bridgeport; she was really distraught. My dog is the sweetest and most social dog and loves to play with other dogs and meet new people. I don't know what went on here, because no one took the time to tell me, but she hated it and the staff did nothing to try and secure my business. I also don't like that they don't have cameras here so I can check on the dog periodically throughout the day as other doggie day cares do. I wont be sending my dog here again, not only because my dog did not seem to like it but also because the staff didn't really wow me in any way as I described through out the review. read more

We've been customers at Dog Gone Smart since they first opened. And I have had excellent results from various training programs, both private and classes. But we will never board there again. They do not seem able to handle many types of dogs. If your dog is rowdy, he's out. Although I understand they need to protect our pets, other kennels in the area that offer play times with boarding seem better able to manage. And then there's the COST!! We love our dogs and pamper them, are willing to pay for expensive extras and special training. But holy moly. Never again. I'm done. read more

I initially really loved this boarding place compared to others in town (Best Friends). The dogs are active a majority of the day and they have late pick-up. There are more expensive but it is worth the drive and price to know my dog is being active. However, I recently picked up my dog and she now has Kennel Cough. She had been there for 5 days so it may have come from another source but within 5 minutes I could tell she was coughing and was not notified by staff something was wrong. I have been attending agility classes at Dog Gone Smart for quite a while now. It's a fun, friendly facility that offers a multitude of amenities for training, boarding, & various activities. The staff is always friendly and helpful; as is my instructor. She is fully certified, with decades of dog training experience, using positive reinforcement techniques. My dog has advanced her skill level in a very short period of time, & she loves it. It's rewarding to see how quickly they learn in a gentle, kind, environment. We, also, enjoy cheering for each other's dogs on the course, as well! I look forward to my weekly classes, & my pup gets so excited when we pull into the parking lot, she can't wait to get inside. The atmosphere is very enjoyable for all. I drive 50 miles weekly to attend classes here, & it is well worth the trip! read more

This is a Top Dog facility! They have great care for every dog there and they always know my dogs name. We've done everything here from puppy time, to group classes, daycare, and boarding. Each time we have had a happy boy come home. I have never had a bad experience here. I wish they had cameras so we could watch our dog frolic and play but that is just a nicety. Still love Dog Gone Smart! Our dog is now almost 2 years old and we continue to bring her here at least 2x/week for day care depending on our work schedules. She comes home happy, well-cared for, and pooped from playing all day. We have since used DGS for boarding as well. The process was very easy and we know our dog loved staying overnight with all her friends. We also knew she was in great hands and felt very comfortable leaving her there for a few nights. The staff is still fantastic - low turnover and there are always lots of doggies playing, but it never feels overcrowded, loud, or overwhelming. Bonus for small dog owners: they now have a "small dog pen" in the front window where dogs who are on the tinier side (under 25 lbs) can relax and play without feeling intimidated by the big guys. read more

We moved from the city about a year ago, and I've been using Vilma for summer cuts and bathing since we came to Norwalk. My dog is pretty high-anxiety and Vilma goes out of her way to schedule the grooming appointment so that my dog has little, if no, waiting time on either end of the session. The actual cut she does is excellent (granted- shes no fancy breed, but Vilma is excellent.) Whether it's for "Fun" or "Therapy"..... there is nothing better for you Dog, especially during the cold Winter months. My 'Jackson" goes crazy when I say "Do you want to go swimming"?
