A coworker, who happens to be a photographer as well, told me about Dodd camera so I stopped in to see if I could sell my Canon DSLR camera. I spoke to Eric W. who is the camera resale guy (his official title is Photographic Specialist). He ran a price quote for me on my camera body and 2 lenses. One of my lenses has never been used so it is almost brand new. The resale price came out to be a somewhat reasonable price considering that my camera was bought in 2011. They were willing to buy my camera for $79 which includes the 2 lenses, and battery with charger. That price is too LOW for me. I was told if I try to sell it online then I would only get about $150 back which is the price the store would try to sell it for. I felt I was better off trying to sell my camera on my own especially since it is still in good condition. I decided not to sell my camera just yet because I want to see how much I can get for it online or elsewhere. I'm thinking that I can get between $200-$250 if I sell my camera considering that I spent over $500 for it. I was told that the price quoted to me would last for about 5 days so I could always come back and sell my camera at the store if I needed to. This store is huge. It is located very close to Cuyahoga Community College. They sell all sorts of new and used cameras and camera equipment. I believe that they even take photographs too so you can call and schedule an appointment. I recommend this place for all your camera needs. The sales people I encountered were also very friendly. I dropped off old photos to scan. I had paid about $1 a photo with prior drop offs. I get a call a few weeks later and am told my scans are ready. I get there and and given over $800 bill and am told each scan was $2.50. I asked why I didn't get a call or a quote or anything before doing work, said they don't do that and would be changing process in the future. I called back the next day and asked for consideration given the huge cost relative to the usual cost. It took a week to hear from them and was told there was nothing they could do. I was absolutely stunned - wasn't expecting a bait and switch - almost tripling the cost of the work and not calling the customer to tell them before doing work?? Sorry to say I won't be back - just awful. read more

Not from the area, I drove 45 minutes to Cleveland to drop off film because I have no local options. Arrived 25 minutes before 6pm which is their advertised closing time both online and on the door. When I arrived, the parking lot was full with a surplus of people inside but doors were locked. There's also a sign that says 24 hour film drop off so I hoped I could just do that and leave. Unsure of the situation and wanting to ask for clarity to avoid a wasted and potentially a second wasted trip if I have to come back, tried to call the store and received no answer. When an employee walked to the door, I showed him my rolls of film hoping I could ask for some type of clarification, to which he rudely waved his hand and told me to shoo as if I were a pet. I felt incredibly disrespected and after many years and well over thousands of dollars spent at Dodd on cameras, equipment, film and backdrops they will never receive my business again. read more

Attitude and high prices... THE UP--SIDE: A decent selection of photography gear. It's nice to be able to hold it in your hand and check it out (before you buy on-line!) THE DOWN-SIDE: The people here are a little too full of themselves for me, and the prices seem a little high. In the old days, before digital photography and the Internet, there really was a place for shops like Dodd's. However, you can find far better prices and a better selection at quality Internet sites like B&H Photography. You can also get higher quality prints at a fraction of the cost at Costco. This place is old and lame. Not only was I served last even though I got there before the pretty blonde (racist anyone??), but I would advise everyone to steer clear of this place. I asked to purchase a Canon battery and the owner - I am assuming it was the owner because he was old with a rolex - gave me an off-brand one. I told him I wanted a Canon OEM battery and he gave me this attitude and said, "Canon is NOT in the battery business!" Well - neither is a cheaper off-brand one. If I want to buy a Canon OEM and pay more money then let me!!!! OH - and btw - since I use to work in electronic distribution, I know that the off-brand battery had more margin. I agree that the people working at Dodd have something that can come across as snotty. But that's just with some of the employees, but they are there for a reason, they know their stuff. I use the online option to get my images printed which is so helpful and easy. I just upload my images from my own computer and *ta daaaa! Two days later I have images ready and archival quality. I like that everyone seems to be knowledgeable of photography from all angles. I admit it can come across as intimidating but I know that what I get will be high quality. What an insane customer service turn around since the last time I came in. Normally I stick with their smaller locations around town and skip the flagship store for that reason--not enough staff to service the guests sufficiently. I really don't think the problem is snotty attitude or bad customer service, rather there aren't enough people there to help all the folks who come in with questions. Chances are, if you're stopping by Dodd for equipment, you're going to ask some questions and need some advice. This industry requires a lot of customer service, so Dodd needs to step up the staff. Contrary to my past experience and other Yelpers' reviews, I just came back from one of the best customer experiences I've had in a while. Mike, an employee since 2005 and owner of a photography business, helped both my friend and I find just what we were looking for. He took us newbs through tripod 101, lighting, reflectors and refurbished lenses. We took up about an hour of his time and his knowledge was much appreciated. The advice he gave us was priceless and he was just as nice as could be. To whoever owns this place, Mike needs a promotion AND needs to train other Dodd employees how to really help folks. The prices are high-ish, but not by much. Sure, you can find cheap alternatives online, but it's a local company and I don't mind paying extra for the guidance, service and advice I got there today. I took home a refurbished lens after all that, with no pressure from Mike to buy the other things we looked at for an hour. I've been a customer in Mayfield Hts and Mentor, purchasing $4000 plus in merchandise. In March 2015 I took my point and shoot to Mentor with a discharged batterey. They did a quick charge and sent me on my way, with no fee. The battery failed and I returned and purchased a new battery. Today I went to the mentor store with a different point and shoot and a fully discharged battery, the clerk directed me to Bull Dog battery to check the battery and presumable purchase a new battery if needed. I asked to do a quick charge to see if it held a charge, this time he wanted a $7.50 fee to do that. WOW so I left the store with by issue unresolved and sent to a competitor to buy a battery. Really smart business model. I'll be back to the Mentor store to view a needed product, learn all about it, and purchase it from B & H for a lot less. That $7.50 will cost you a lot more than $7.50 read more

I'm a film enthusiast so my review is based on their film resources FYI. I have consistently used Dodd Camera as a resource for film processing formats or emulsions that I can't (or won't) process at home. They've always provided good quality services and a great attitude. Dropping your film off at their downtown location is an easy experience, and for many film types/emulsions you can expect a very fast turn around--C41 is often done the same day. Be sure to request your film to be sleeved and cut if you're doing processing of negatives only--otherwise you'll receive the film in one long strip (which is useful for some--just an FYI if you're expecting cut film in sleeves.) Lab work is top notch--everything is always processed correctly. In the 20+ I've been using Dodd, I have yet to ever have an issue with negatives or prints. I gave a 4 star review only because of the price of their film--do expect a significant mark-up in film stock price at Dodd. They tack on a fairly hefty margin on just about all of it. While I'm all about supporting local businesses, it's a hard decision to make when you can save (in some cases) $5.00 a roll by simply ordering your film from Amazon or B&H. They do have a fairly good selection of film (though they are lacking in single rolls in 120 and 35mm in the Kodak Professional emulsions--usually they only carry multipacks. Would buy film from Dodd A LOT more often if their pries were comparable to B&H/Amazon/Freestyle/Film Photography Project. They do not carry movie film (also disappointing.) You'll have to purchase your regular 8/super 8/16mm film online. They also do not carry 110 or any other Lomography products. Generally, the people there don't know much about recent developments in the film world (new manufacturers/emulsions/updates etc.) Would be nice if they had a Product Manager who would train associates on the latest information. For example, a few of the associates had no idea 127 film was still available nor did they know that 110 was still being manufactured by Lomography. Not a huge deal (and everyone there is super helpful and friendly) but it would be great if the organization spent some more time supporting traditional film. They have a plethora of dark room equipment, prices on chemicals (especially powders) are fairly competitive. Overall, this is a fantastic place for your photography needs and while I don't know much about digital photography products, they certainly have a lot of it, too. read more

I have had mixed experiences with camera stores over the years. The normal gatekeepers who have been in the industry so long that they can afford to be condescending to younger photographers. With that said, I was extremely pleased with Dodd's customer service. They were able to answer all of my questions and get me set up with my new gear. Dayton, Ohio Branch I had a photography business several years ago. Since, I got out of the business but still frequented Dodd Camera (formally Click Camera). A few months ago I took my Nikon D3s to Dodd for cleaning. It was a new D3s with nothing wrong with it but I wanted to get it cleaned out prior to my trip through Europe. When I got my camera returned, the view finder was full of filth. Since it was not on my mirrors, I took the camera to Europe since I was leaving the next day. Now every time I look into my viewfinder, I remember the $100 that I spent to have this "cleaned" and will never go back again for photography cleaning or equipment. read more

I was looking for options for a camera that was out of stock through the major camera outlets online and saw a link on Nikon's website indicating Dodd's had it in stock. I placed the online order but received no confirmation email indicating the order had been processed. The next day, I used the "contact us" form and received a callback a few minutes later letting me know my order had been processed and would be shipped that day. I still never received any communication or confirmation in writing via email. After a couple of days, I called and asked for a tracking number and was told it was "AGAINST COMPANY POLICY TO GIVE OUT TRACKING NUMBERS." I pushed for a reason why they wouldn't want a customer to be able to track their order, but the only reason they could provide was for security purposes. I asked why they wouldn't follow the standard practices of the other major online retailers who provide immediate email communication and tracking information and he couldn't give me an answer. He looked up my order and said it would be arriving this coming Monday (today is Friday), I'm hoping it does. ***Update: The camera arrived on Monday as promised and everything worked out. Ryan, who is over online sales reached out to me and indicated their system should have sent out a confirmation but didn't for some reason. Hopefully the employee I spoke to will receive some training to help him provide better service in this type of situation in the future.*** read more

Since it is Cleveland's oldest and largest photo equipment store it has a place for area shooters to shop and exchange information. I ordered a flash and trigger and mistaken ordered the wrong trigger, mistake was on my end. Upon my discovery I contacted Dodd Camera and they overnighted me the correct trigger without charging me anything extra and gave me sufficient time to send the other trigger back. The folks here helped me out off a desperate situation on a tight timeline, for which I am eternally grateful. It's a big store with good opportunities to get a hands-on feel for equipment purchases. They have a rental program that offers a steal-of-a-deal on weekend rentals on Saturdays, 50% off morning of (assuming the lens you want is on hand). Conveniently located just outside the main downtown area, it's easy to get to on Prospect, and has ample off-street parking so that you don't have to worry about the meter. read more

They cross processed my slide film. Ruined the only photos of an exhaustive trip canoe trip that I took through Canada. I can't in good conscience recommend this store to anybody. On top of it all, I received this pithy note blaming, "processing order was damaged during development due to a mechanical failure in the equipment." Certainly is not mechanical when the wrong chemicals are used on a certain type of film...Try human error. In addition, the free roll of film that was included is expired. Pathetic. read more

I absolutely cannot say enough great things about this camera store and their employee Suzanne. I met Suzanne at Shutterfest in St. Louis, I took her card and then decided to buy a used Profoto B1 head. She treated me so very well we went through all the options and she surprised me with the same freebies that Profoto WA giving away with new purchases. When there was a problem with my purchase she patiently walked me through to discover the nearly pristine head was damaged and would not fire. Then, she sent me an even more pristine head and she updated it to the B1X high speed sync software. She makes sure you receive and review several invoices to make sure you are getting exactly what you need. If they have something you want to buy that is out of stock, they will send you the item from rental stock to tide you over til your product comes. Last week I ordered more used gear and Suzanne gave me a better than eBay price on two used Profoto D1 heads and even surprised me again with a few more goodies. The equipment came within days as I need it on a shoot on Tuesday. She made excellent suggestions. I have spent about $4500 with Dodd this year. I have only dealt with Suzanne. I am so very glad that I met her at Shutterfest! She is a dedicated and knowledgeable employee and a wonderful patient person. Dodd in Cleveland is my camera store and Suzanne is my camera equipment consultant extraordinaire. I live outside of Chicago near the Dodd store here. I will be going to pick stuff up from that location soon, but I will always call Dodd in Cleveland and Suzanne first before making a major equipment purchase. Great place. Highly recommend Eric. Employees are knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. This is the place to go for advice, because all the sales personnel I have met are also photography professionals or advanced amateurs, with different sales personnel having in-depth expertise in specific products. Eric is great in Pentax, and a digital Pentax owner himself. Don't worry about pricing. They generally mark at standard manufacturer's suggested retail, but then meet B&H on request. I think the friendly service and professional assistance is at least worth the extra high Cleveland sales tax that you miss out on at B&H. read more

My wife bought me a tripod online from Shopatron, which ended up being an internet sales vehicle for Dodd Camera. Unfortunately, she purchased the wrong model. Mark and Matthew at Dodd really displayed amazing customer service in helping me fix the problem. They found the model I wanted (which by the way had been discontinued) and made arrangements to have it shipped from Manfrotto in Italy to their Chicago location where I could pick it up and not pay the double shipping costs of the new item and returning the old one. Given the logistics, the exchange took a few weeks. I followed up on the order at least 3 times and every time I called, someone at Dodd researched my order status and ALWAYS called me back the same day with an update. I was able to make a very painless exchange only miles from my house thanks to these guys. Given the fact that my order had already been paid for, they could have been much less helpful.
