I'd read some glowing reviews of this fish & chip shop so I kept it in mind. I don't eat this food…read morevery often now but I did eat a lot of it in my early teens, but that's a whole other story. So pulled up into the car park, two degrees outside and 'are we human or are we dancer' coming out of the radio as I turned off the engine. First duty was into a nearby supermarket for a soft white bread pan. When it's fish n chips it has to be tea, bread and lots of butter. A good sprinkling of salt on the fish n chips too. Carbs, animal fats and hardly a healthy calorie in sight. So into the chip shop to a friendly welcome from a man, certainly didn't look like Paula but it's a funny old world so I thought better than to ask. Two fish and chips please (or as we used to say: two fish suppers) £11.60 was required. I checked it was cod and he almost seemed taken aback at my question - he said, 'of course'. I waited a bit pleased that the food was being cooked to order. The portions of cod were huge, with fresh, white chunky and skinless meat. If you aren't sure how fresh cod tastes try it here as it's very fresh. I thought each chip portion was a tad mean but once home and in the plate it was generous enough. The food is cooked in beef dripping. There is no substitute good enough, groundnut, peanut, rapeseed, olive, corn oils none come close. The batter was towards thin and I like that, and to be fair the food sat in a take out bag until I got home and put out the plates and do on. Despite this the food was excellent, perfectly good food and still quite warm. A chip buttie was a must. Now I've eaten some of the finest foods on earth but I gotta tell ya the taste of a white soft pan bread chip buttie with a bit of salt and a generous slap of butter is wonderful made all the better with hot tea. The glowing reviews are right, it's a great place. The next time I want very good fish & chips I know where to go. Maybe next time I'll sit in and have it at its very best. Who knows now that oil prices have fallen the prices here should drop too.

We just happened to be passing by too about a week later and also decided to give it a go. So we got a fish & chips - cod of course - and the food was top notch. The batter was light and crisp and not greasy. The cod was Persil white, moist and chunky. It was a good portion too. The chips were perfectly cooked too exactly as they should be. The meal was £5. Now there was a downside as I was not offered salt or vinegar. Imagine fish & chips without salt and vinegar. I didn't see either about so while I would ordinarily knock a star off for such howlers I'm not going to because the quality of food and portion size for a fiver is a fair deal and it's only right to be fair right back but I would recommend they invest in salt and vinegar. Finally, as I waited for my meal the guy behind the counter was making what looked like pizza bases and firing them into an oven. They came out like a dinner plate sized cross between a nan bread and a pitta bread and more toward pitta. These were the base for chicken and lamb kebabs and this type of food is just so appealing when it's fresh and good.

Soda, as in bread? Cod bites? We went with haddock & gravy on the side for the chips. Hubby also got a kebab to soak up the whiskey mess that was bound to happen later. I have to say, a generous delightful serving of both the fish n' the chips. Kebab was overstuffed, in a good way.

Instead this stays as another local favourite and for good reason: it does delicious chips and its extensive menu is great too. They offer good value meals deals in here, and everything in here has been really tasty from my experiences. The batter on their fishes is rich and crispy, their burgers are succulent and full of flavour and everything else is equally delicious. They also do homemade Italian style ice cream in here which is really delicious, with milkshake options to act as a post main meal dessert. The staff here are courteous and polite, and the place is kept spotless which is important in shops like this. There is also ample parking out front or to the rear so there isn't the same parking worry for food that many other Downpatrick places would be suffering from!

Especially when there's the Fishy Mecca that is Doc's right bang in Downpatrick. But I digress... I first tried this place last year after reading about it online. It's been named as a best in Ireland eatery by the Bridgestone guide and has made the list of top fish and chip shops in the UK. Being a fish-loving fanatic I made the pilgrimage to give it a go. And I am so glad I did! It's easily found in Annalong, just drive through past the petrol station and it's on your way out on the right hand side. It looks small but very welcoming from the outside and once you enter it is absolutely spotlessly clean with lots of lovely photos and other fishing paraphernalia on the walls, clear menus displayed and details of specials. And plenty of punters, so be prepared to wait. I had my order taken by a very polite and helpful (and spotlessly turned out) member of staff, paid my money, took my receipt and waited on the goods. I ordered scampi, a large cod, portion of chips with peas and onions, some mushy peas, and a side salad box. Oh, and two teas, can't forget those. My booty was promptly and thoroughly packed up in brown paper bags and I teetered out to the car with it. The smells emanating from the bags were so divine that I knew we were in for a treat and we dived in to investigate. Hand on heart, this is the best scampi I've ever eaten in my life -and- the most reasonably priced. At least a dozen pieces coated in the loveliest, most beautifully seasoned breadcrumbs and perfectly cooked. No hint of dryness, and gorgeous large and juicy prawns. Absolutely perfect. The fish we ordered was similarly lush - a beautiful light batter, moist and perfectly fried fish and a generous portion of it to boot. The salad box was fantastic too, just about every kind of salad vegetable you can think of with coleslaw and dressings included and some cheese. Really lovely and again a bargain price. The fried onions and peas were lovely and the chips... well, they weren't bad. Could have done with more cooking as they were soft and stuck together a bit like many chippy chips do, but hey, chips aren't the main event when you're a fish fanatic, they're just the garnish. All in all, I have to say that this place gives my beloved Doc's a run for their money. Their scampi is quite simply unbeatable, their fish is gorgeous, their portion sizes are generous, the pricing is the most reasonable I've seen for such high quality goods, and the whole place oozes good hygiene practice and has very polite, efficient staff. It was just a takeaway when I went, but I understand now from their updated website that there's a sit in restaurant too! With a sweet menu! By heck, I am trying that out soon and will report back. For now, though, I can't recommend The Galley highly enough. Make the trip and see for yourself - it's well worth it.

I ordered through a hatch to a face I couldn't see, just a voice, as the cafe seemed closed to sitting inside. The flat white was one of the best I've had. I must add that my 5 stars are based on just on one single coffee on a first visit standing on a street, on what turned out to be one of the hottest days we've ever had in Northern Ireland, 29c. It is unheard off - for the last 8 weeks we've averaged about 16c and usually cloudy every day. The service was swift too, the coffee seemed to appear in a nanosecond. The cup was biodegradable and the plastic lid recycle able. So while it's only a delicious coffee - to make coffee this good shows a passion and a love of food. I was staying in the Slieve Donard hotel. They had the gall to serve the worst coffee and worst breakfast food my family have had served up in a very long time - this was the view of 7 of us. The hotel's rotten 'free breakfast' was provided on foot of having paid £185 a night for a double room for two people (or twice the price of the hard rock hotel London centre in a current deal). I noted that most Donard hotel coffees were priced at £4 but having had their coffee offering at breakfast like their lousy food, I thought never again.

I ended up getting a san Pellegrino can and my fiancé ended up getting a coffee drink. We split one of the desserts and they where really good. The staff here was very friendly and they we busy too. It seemed like a good place to stop for a drink or to meet up with some friends. I bet if you needed to work remotely you could probably sit at a table order a few drinks and be good to go for a while.
