When in the U.P........ So this was my very first pasty experience. We already knew that we were going to split one, and take it to go, but I was still surprised with how sparse the inside of the building was. I was expecting lots of seating, but there wasn't . There were maybe 5-6 tables? Also, U.P. souvenirs! I wasn't expecting that! This was the first place I saw some out of all the places I had already visited. Anywho, I would have to say that this was my favorite pasty, out of the 4 places we tried. The crust was perfectly baked and held together the entire time. It was full of seasoned beef, potatoes, rutabaga, and a bit of onion. I don't care for onions, but the pieces must have been tiny and mixed in with the beef pieces, because I didn't see any. Now, there is a bit of a rivalry between the U.P. and mainland concerning whether to eat your pasty with ketchup or gravy. We purchased a side of gravy for 25 cents, and got ketchup for free. Our first bite was naked, then we tried one with gravy, followed by one with ketchup. Consensus was that gravy was better, but on that particular pasty, ketchup was not bad. Luckily, there are a few locations around the peninsula, so you don't necessarily have to drive to Escanaba to get one from this chain, but I don't think you'll be disappointed if you do. First time trying some UP pasties and can't say I will seek them out again based on this experience. We got the recommended beef with gravy and a pizza to go, along with a frozen ham and cheese and a breakfast pasty to bake the next morning. We just found the flavors to be a little lacking overall. The gravy did help on the beef but the pizza was super heavy on the tomato sauce and hardly had any meat. Crusts were ok. We baked the frozen ones the next morning and they took way longer than their instructions specifically said. Ended up microwaving them at the end. The ham and cheese was decent but again the breakfast one seemed lacking - would have benefitted from some salsa or hot sauce. Service was friendly. When you are in the UP, you have to get a pasty. These were good quality pasties with decent flavor and fresh. They have options in half pound or three-quarter pound varieties. You can't come to the Michigan Upper Peninsula withput trying a pasty. This was the first pasty shop that we visited in Escanaba. It was excellent. The server was very personable and efficient. However, in the early day, they were already out of chicken pastys. The seating area was sufficient but nothing special. We enjoyed our meal and our first introduction to pasties. A solid four stars for Dobber's Here in the Atlanta area, finding a decent pasty is tough since most people don't move here from Michigan, much less The UP area. Yes, I know pasties come from other places in the world, but The UP is known (almost comically) for these little single-serving meals, so I figured I should get on board. Due to The Virus, I figured I would research which places would ship pasties to the great south, and alas... Dobber's DOES! If you follow the instructions exactly, then you end up with the perfect pasty. A nice flaky crust, and the innards are well seasoned. I found it was a good match to grab some onion gravy as well. Pro-Tip: Don't microwave your pasty, they end up mushy. Go the old-fashioned route and plop them in the oven as the heavens intended and you end up with a little gut bomb of goodness delivered straight from The UP. The only reason I give four stars, is because it's not fair to give them five stars without visiting the actual location, which I intend to do as soon as we are allowed. read more

Stopped by to try a pastie while in the UP in Escanaba. I ordered 2 beef pasties which the person said was their specialty. Dobber's pasties were a real disappointment. 1) they had them sitting on top of the oven already bagged and were only lukewarm at best. No effort to make them fresh or heat it up for a minute or two in the oven. 2) the pastie is 95% potato and contained very very little beef and no other vegetables I could see. (See pic). What beef they do use is this shredded meat I couldn't say was actual beef. They should call their pasties "potato" pasties because that's all that's inside. read more

Had our first Pastie experience. Unfortunately we were not impressed. They were lukewarm and very dry. I got the chicken and my husband got the beef. Mine was like a very dry bland chicken pot pie. As soon as we walked in the door the service was poor. I asked for a chicken pasty. It was nice and hot but the pasty was pretty dry and bland and had hardly any chicken. Pretty sure they used canned chicken as well. I had a beef pasty with rutabaga, onions and carrots from Gram's just down the road from Dobber's, it was much nicer. The food is "okay" nothing exceptional and I've had a lot better , especially for the price . The portion size is a bit on the light side . That being said , it's clean , available, and usually pretty friendly. The variety is good to. My advice would be to either increase the size of the pasties, modify the recipes, or to reduce the price. The Pasty Guy would give this 3.5 stars if it was an option, but rounding up is fine. Dobber's makes a pasty that tastes like a pasty and that's all you need. The biggest issue is with their crust, which is just too soft and can't be compared to the better ones in the U.P. I was recommended to eat at Dobber's by friends who grew up in this area. It is a small Pasty factory and take out restaurant. They also do a lot of shipping to hometown folk who have moved away. We tried 3 Pasties (Otherwise known as Turnovers or Empanadas) and they were pretty good but I was not overwhelmed. The pastie was pretty good (I ate the "traditional" one which is beef)...somewhat like what Mom used to make...I am a tough critic on this one as my Mom's would have been ten stars...seriously folks...she made hers with small cubes of sirlion steak. Mom made them from scratch all while I was growing up...the key is the crust...the rest will follow. Options are ketsup or gravy...to accompany...cannot even phathom gravy on it...I am a traditionslist which is ketsup. THAT is how I roll. Needed more salt for my liking. This joint is better suited for take out...pretty plain vanila. Plenty easy to find parking...i never like an eating place cleaning floors while I am in the midst of eating. dobbers has great pasties! it's comical seeing people who have never had one before comment on them.. first of all, they usually are a little bit dry. that's why us yoooers put ketchup or gravy on them. second, usually they are made and put in a warmer bc they take about 40 minutes to cook and unless u feel like sitting there for a while, just take a warm one or one to go and make at home which is what the business typically is made for! anyways, if you like pasties, they have good ones and multiple flavors :-) read more

It had big pieces of chicken, spices/flavor, lots of potatoes/veg, some moisture (sometimes they're dry...), and a good, flaky crust. If you've never had the pleasure of eating a pastie, do yourself a favor and drive up to the U.P. at your earliest convenience, and do like I did - get yourself a stockpile of pasties. A really good place to pick up pasties, either fresh or frozen. We brought some home from Escanaba and had some the other night. All the memories of vacation in the U.P. flooded back.
