Dobber's Pasties - Beef Pasty

Dobber's Pasties

A "pastie" may be the norm in this area, but I was here as a tourist and am not used to eating one…read more Our bus stopped here. The location is well marked with plenty of parking. The restaurant was clean. I noticed that they ship their pasties anywhere you want, for a few $ of course. You can also buy them there frozen if you want to prepare them at home later so they and hot & fresh.

When in the U.P........ So this was my very first pasty experience. We already knew that we were…read moregoing to split one, and take it to go, but I was still surprised with how sparse the inside of the building was. I was expecting lots of seating, but there wasn't . There were maybe 5-6 tables? Also, U.P. souvenirs! I wasn't expecting that! This was the first place I saw some out of all the places I had already visited. Anywho, I would have to say that this was my favorite pasty, out of the 4 places we tried. The crust was perfectly baked and held together the entire time. It was full of seasoned beef, potatoes, rutabaga, and a bit of onion. I don't care for onions, but the pieces must have been tiny and mixed in with the beef pieces, because I didn't see any. Now, there is a bit of a rivalry between the U.P. and mainland concerning whether to eat your pasty with ketchup or gravy. We purchased a side of gravy for 25 cents, and got ketchup for free. Our first bite was naked, then we tried one with gravy, followed by one with ketchup. Consensus was that gravy was better, but on that particular pasty, ketchup was not bad. Luckily, there are a few locations around the peninsula, so you don't necessarily have to drive to Escanaba to get one from this chain, but I don't think you'll be disappointed if you do. A+++ 18/2025

Drifter's Restaurant - Morning sampler and blueberry pancakes with a side of bacon

Oh, man. You ever do that thing where you want to try a pasty for the first time, so you search for…read morea good restaurant that has them, then go about your business for a minute, then search the google map for the restaurant based on memory alone, then go to the restaurant only to find out you went to the wrong restaurant because you have the memory of a goldfish? No? Nobody? Just me? Damnit. The silver lining? A wonderful breakfast meal and cheap to boot! Since I realized I'm part idiot (and not the good part), I decided to eat breakfast at my accidental restaurant. Mostly because I was already sitting in the booth and did NOT want to admit defeat. And boy howdy, am I glad I did! I ordered the French toast, eggs, and bacon. Two toasts, two eggs, and about three bacons. And a breakfast Coke (which is normal coke, but in the morning). First off, the eggs. I only eat scrambled eggs because I'm a child. Salt and pepper, then into my mouth. I don't like creamy scrambled eggs and I don't like scrambled eggs that get that weird skin on them for cooking too long. These ones were perfect. I garbled them down. My trick is to heavily salt and pepper them THEN cut them up and mix them together to disperse the seasoning. Eggs 10/10 The French toast? Perfect. Good size slices, a ball of butter on top (thankfully enough to spread over all four triangles), and a ramekin of syrup. They were the perfect portions. The FT (French toast) had the best sponginess and fluffiness. French Toast (FT) 10/10 Finally. The bacon. Look. I am a huss for bacon. I'll do some shady sh** for some good bacon. But I ain't going back to prison. I always ALWAYS request my bacon be floppy. Some places call it limp. I call mine floppy. Because I'm a professional. A lot of places struggle on what floppy should look like. I've had floppy bacon I could put through a plate glass window. I've broken a piece of floppy bacon on a table edge and shanked somebody (see prior prison comment). But here? This place? Sweetie pie, I could tie my shoes with this bacon it's so floppy. I could lasso a baby calf with this floppy a** bacon. If you don't believe me, I attached a photo of what floppy bacon should look like. Professional Floppy Bacon 12/10. I would also like to mention the Coke this place served was top tier. It's like it's chilled prior to coming out the fountain dispenser. It just went down SO smooth. Drink some. Also. It's a medium-quiet place. Family friendly. Has that down home look and feel.

10/10 recommend. We were driving through the UP, headed back to Milwaukee and planned on getting…read morefast food but decided to stop here instead - and it was a good choice! A true diner in every capacity and the portion sizes were HUGE - enough to feed two people for every meal. The food was good as well and we experienced good service. The restaurant…read moreopens at 10:30am so, you can only assume the chicken gets cooked shortly beforehand and would be as fresh as can be at 10:57 am, right? Well boy was I wrong, we got served the driest, oldest looking, and greasiest leftover chicken they had left over from the night before. And you will not convince me otherwise that was not leftover from the night before and dunked in the deep fryer chicken. Called the KFC line to report how bad this restaurant is and they offered me a $20.00 ticket for the store and I refused because I have no intention of ever returning to this KFC, and if they're lucky any other KFC in existence.

Staff was passively friendly and when dealing with customers and the cleanliness of the building was fair and acceptable. However, this is KFC! and the quality of the "Chicken" served here was "HORRIBLE". It was over-battered with a thick, mushy, saturated with seed oil (dripping with oil!) COLD oil, cold chicken that was very small pieces of chicken once you removed the thick, oily batter and the unnatural amount of additional fat (injected into parts where chickens DO NOT have fat). This was NOT the "Kentucky Fried Chicken" I remember from decades ago! I can honestly say that the upset stomach I suffered from for a few hours was more enjoyable than this abomination of over-processed insult to chicken and the quality KFC was originally founded on.. Never Again! The Chicken here was Disgusting!
