Sweetest woman did my nails! I got a gel mani for valentine's day and she did a good job replicating what I showed her as a reference (chrome nails with a little red heart on each nail). The place is quite small so definitely call ahead for an appointment, especially if you want to do a more complex design. You have to take the elevator up the 500 building to the 8th floor to find the studio. Prices pretty standard for SF nails -- the gel mani cost me $50. I've yet to find anywhere cheaper around me. They do a decent job for the price. Felt pretty pampered throughout the whole experience. This is more of an express spot for when you need nice nails in a jiffy. Both times that I've visited after work, Annie has been the only one working on nails. Make sure to call ahead of time for this reason! Her gel manicures are $30 for me, which includes prior gel removal. I love the way she shapes my nails and how quick she is. She's also a great conversationalist if you're in the mood to chat! The price is right and the location is stellar (located a few blocks from Union Square). However, I have to give her 4 stars instead of 5 due to the fact that her gel manicures do not last. Both times, my gel manicures have only lasted 1.5 weeks before they began chipping/lifting. I just can't justify the price tag for this short amount of satisfaction. Additionally, I walk out enjoying how she cleans up my cuticles, but the cuticles then become messy after a couple days. My mood-changing-color-polish cherry has officially been popped and it all went down at Doan's. I can sometimes be a bit of a nail polish bore. I'm constantly exploring endless shades of nudes, neutrals and a spectrum of deep reds that could rival that of a French wine cellar. But every once in awhile I stray from that and fully commit to a fun, undeniably bright color. When I first walked into the office building and headed up to the business suite where Doan's is located, I had no idea what I was going for other than a gel manicure. Luckily, I was able to catch her before the lunch rush that I'm sure she gets and was seated immediately. I noticed she carried mood color changing colors and my intrigue immediately set in. I found a tangerine ~ hot pink color which on the bottle left me feeling unsure, but once applied I knew I would like. I didn't really know how much the color would change, but had so much fun discovering how dramatically the color is affected by temperature. The entire time I was in SF with cooler temperatures, the polish was a deep tangerine. While later that weekend when I went up to Napa to enjoy warmer weather, it was hot pink the entire time. No chips either for my gel polish and it's already been a little over two weeks, so it's hanging in there the way I would expect. Found this place on yelp and am not at all disappointed! I asked for Annie as her photos on here are pretty impressive. She is very welcoming and friendly. She was even flexible w/me after I called saying I was going to be 15 mins late. She did my Halloween nails which I loved (see photo)! Rating 4 stars instead of 5 because when I wanted to get my long Halloween nails off I went back to her to take off the acrylics, she instead just shaved them down as much as possible. I totally understand her reasoning, which was that since I got the acrylics barely two weeks ago if she took them off my nail would be very weak. As a person who does not wear acrylics often and only got for a special occasion I really just wanted my nails to breathe normally again. I walked in and got a gel manicure/pedicure for $65, which included removal of a previous gel pedicure that I had. Great price and honestly not bad. They are no frills, so you won't be served hot tea and I had to get my manicure done in an awkward sideways position with the UV machine on my lap because they ran out of manicure tables at the time -- but it's okay because I'm not looking to be pampered like a queen, I just want nice nails! I wish my nail technician had pushed my cuticles back to create more nail space, but I guess I can always call that out next time (I wasn't paying attention as she was doing it, so only noticed my cuticles still there after it was too late). However, I don't want to give them a pass because a nail technician should know that you're supposed to push back the cuticles to create more nail space without having to be told to do it. I will post another update to report back on the quality of the manicure, but it's been pretty sturdy so far and I've gone to a music festival and a wedding with no problems. This nail shop is a no-frills approach to good manicures. Located in an office building, it has a bit of an odd vibe but super central. I always texted and have an appointment usually within a day or a couple days. It's super affordable and you will get what you pay for. They will not clean the cuticle and have some imperfections but provide a gel/acrylic manicure that will last around a month or more. This place is just absolutely worth every bang of a college student's buck. I was nervous because I had never gotten my nails done in the city, and also because I wanted to take my acrylic powder nails off without damaging them. In the past, other nail salons would use a fake nail to literally peel the acrylic layer off, which would destroy my nails, but I expressed my concerns to Annie and she fully understood what I was asking her. She took her time to explain what she was going to do, and instead tried a different method to get rid of the powder residue, and it worked perfectly. I found Annie here on yelp. I was looking for a salon in the early evenings and was in dire need of a new acrylic set. She mentions that there aren't a lot of people who do acrylic anymore and more people are doing gel color on top of natural nails. It's kind of hard to find a salon in SF that does acrylic because it's old school, smelly, and the techs really need to understand liquid to powder ratio. The newer younger techs at other salons don't really know how to do this. Annie has been doing nails for over 20 years, long before I was even born. Annie is very talented. She understands what her client's need and want. If there is something she's unable to do because of the level of complexity she tells you straight up to your face instead of attempting to perform the task and it turning out like shit. I appreciate her up front honestly when it comes to intricate designs. Her prices are great! You're in Union square so you're not going to find better prices for the quality of service. I love how she is the only person here and she takes one client at a time. She understands that I'm very particular about my nails and makes extra time for me. I really wanted to like this place and was drawn to the highly rated reviews on yelp. The two women were super sweet and great conversationalists. The down side was the quality of service :( I came in for a regular pedi and gel mani. No complaints on the pedi- so far looks good! The mani... the color was not uniform (splotchy and uneven), polish didn't cover the full nail, and one was cut. A few we had to re-do. Unfortunately- two days later I already had two chips. Prices are reasonable, quality is fantastic (and if you aren't satisfied or your nail chips/breaks they will fix it, just give them a call), and service is superb. I was headed on vacation to San Francisco and didn't have time to get my nails done before I left. I researched and found this place because it was literally less than a block's walk away from my hotel. Even by New York standards, this place is pretty small with just two nail stations and a back room for other spa services! But the staff is very friendly, clean and efficient. I was able to walk in on a Tuesday evening and get a manicure with a minimal wait (20 min since both ladies were working on customers). I'm not going to lie, the location is a little weird because it's in an office building up on the 8th floor. But you should definitely check this place out. Prices are a bit high (compared to New York rates). I paid 18 for a basic manicure even though someone posted a picture of their rate card where the basic mani was $15. So either they raised their rates or just decided to charge more. But I didn't feel like arguing as I was going to give whatever was left of my $20 to the manicurist as tip because I liked her personality.
