Went to the downstairs bar on a Friday! It is quite hard to get a seat as a walk in but got lucky. Had a live band singing and great service. It's quite small so not much space to stand if it's a large group. Also there was a time limit on my table - something like 50 mins for apps or 1 1/2 with entrees Thoroughly enjoyed my snapper tiradito and the Maryland crab guac was really great. The hostess was polite and our server was very friendly, knowledgeable, and charmed us and our guests. Appreciated the lightness after a long work week. Now let's get to the food, Honey. The Maryland Crab Guacamole was very tasty, should have gotten a to-go order. All of our dishes were delicious. My only critique would be to add a little more seasoning to the white fish entree (apologies can't remember the name) but other than that it was all good. And as it was happy hour, i saw a birria taco on that menu and i wanted to see how they did it.. it was good too! I would definitely order both of these again. I've been to dLeña twice and each time has been increasingly underwhelming. i will say the establishment is absolutely gorgeous! The first time i done at dLeña was a few years ago for happy hour. The only thing I remember from that experience was the subpar service. This time a friend and I dined at the restaurant for lunch during Restaurant Week, and it started off well. The host was great and attentive, and the server was decent. For my first course I ordered the ceviche and it was delicious! Truly the best thing to come to the table. My friend ordered the lump crab soup, but we were told it doesn't actually come with lump crab in it (not even as a topper). A very strange response considering Ive worked in the industry for over 10 years and its pretty customary for a soup to visually represent the contents of its description. The soup itself didn't taste like seafood, it only tasted like the butternut squash and roasted green apple as described on the menu.. i tried it and thought it was overwhelmingly sweet and lacked depth. For my second course, i ordered the birri barbacoa tacos. I will say the arbol peanut sauce was fantastic and made the tacos! The plating of course was gorgeous, but where it lost me was the portion size. Two medallion-sized tacos? Serving someone two tacos has to be some kind of bad luck... three tacos is standard unless its an a la carte order and that's in nearly every mexican restaurant I've been to and even evident in reviews and my first time dining at dLeña. I'm not sure if corners were cut because of restaurant week, but that was disappointing. My third course was the creamy corncake (not pictured (Pastel De Elote)).. I REALLY wanted to like this dessert; however, it was nothing like I anticipated. Portion wasn't small, it was tiny! Which is fine because it just did not taste good. I've had Pastel De Elote before and i was looking forward to experiencing it from an elevated point of view. The Pastel De Elote at DLena was not sweet, it was bland and had a horrible soapy aftertaste. The texture was correct but everything else was wrong. I want to like dLeña, i really do! i always have high hopes because Im a fan of Chef Sandoval and the reviews are great for the most part. But it leads me to question, how impactful are great reviews when consistency at the restaurant is lacking? I'm not sure. i hope to be redeemed by dLeña in the future, but these past two experiences leave me hesitant to try dinner. read more

dLena's interior is absolutely stunning. The dining room and lounge are beautifully curated with dark wood tones and neutral colors, creating a cozy and romantic ambiance. The calm atmosphere is especially appreciated since the space can get quite loud at times. We arrived early for our reservation and were invited to head down to the lounge while we waited. A server led us downstairs and helped us get settled. The lounge was nearly full, so I'd recommend arriving early if you're planning to snag a seat there. We were seated right next to the band setup, which was a nice touch. The lounge has a slightly different drink menu, but the full food menu is available in both spaces. We ordered the Maryland crab guacamole with lump crab, and it was incredible--definitely worth coming back for on its own. After enjoying the appetizer, we moved upstairs to dine, and unfortunately, this is where the experience started to decline. While the staff was friendly, the service was inattentive. Several different staff members came to check on us, as our primary server seemed to lose focus. One thing to note: if you're craving a mixed drink, it's better to order in the lounge since the upstairs bar doesn't offer the same variety. The food was underwhelming for the price. The chorizo queso, which my husband loved, wasn't to my taste. It came with tortillas instead of chips, which I found odd, and our server was absent when we tried to clarify that my husband had requested tortillas with his meal and not the queso which I think was the mixup. The short rib tacos had good flavor, but the meat was so tough it was hard to chew. The Oaxacan shrimp were beautifully plated but lacked the flavor I was expecting. By this point, I was too full from the guacamole to keep trying the dishes. My husband decided to order dessert, but after a long wait, he was ready to leave, so we had it packed to go. In summary, the ambiance is fantastic, but the food didn't live up to expectations--except for the Maryland crab guacamole, which is a must-try. Parking is conveniently located directly across from the restaurant, which is a big plus. The ceviche amarillo was pretty good, tangy flavor with the mango. For the main meals, we got the pork belly and mushroom tacos, both were decent but nothing super memorable and felt a bit overpriced for three tacos. I came for a friend's birthday dinner on a weeknight and while the restaurant itself is beautiful and the food is good, I had higher expectations for the experience. From the moment my friend and I sat down at our table, we felt rushed. It was both of our first times there and we were also catching up but within the first 10 minutes of sitting or so, our server had come at least 3 or more times to ask for our drink order or appetizers which sort of made us feel pressured to just choose something versus being able to take our time browsing a new menu. This issue unfortunately continued throughout the night, where the server was asking to take dishes away while we were still working on them. The final "straw" came around 9:30 when he let us know they were closing soon (they close at 10) - but the tone it was said in wasn't like a "hey ladies, last call for our kitchen" or was moreso like rushing us to just close out. My friend was really disappointed because she drove in from Baltimore and this was a celebratory birthday dinner that was kind of clouded by bad service. We did speak to a manager as we wrapped up to let him know about the situation for future guests and the manager was really understanding and sympathetic and said this had been an ongoing issue with our server in particular. Overall, I would like to return to Dleña because I enjoyed the food and drinks but would probably not consider it for a special occasion. read more

We snuck in here on a Saturday around 2PM which we didn't realize was still the bottomless brunch menu. But we grabbed a spot at their bar - which i actually loved because the bartender was awesome! This place was packed. Basically they have a bottomless brunch menu where you can eat and drink all you want for $69 per person. A steal in my opinion. We tried their classic margarita and guacamole. The guac was TO DIE FOR!! Delicious and fresh and came with this fun smoked chip. I'd love to come back here and try their brunch menu but we just had the guac and drinks. AMAZING. I can see why this place is always booked and why their brunch is so famous. We went for bottomless food and my friends also did bottomless drinks. I liked how some of us didn't have to drink and were not pressured into ordering the drink package. Super kind staff that let us know where things were when some of our party was running late. Got a good booth in the corner and love a comfortable seat. We were there for over three hours so honestly thanks to them for letting us stay over our time (so sorry!) Our server Troy could not be better. He's so wonderful, we didn't have to make any decisions and he was so good about my dietary restrictions and allergies. The kitchen and food runners were so caring and made separate plates so I could eat them and made sure to tell us what things were when they dropped food. Troy, we promise to come back and gossip to you about our love lives in the very near future! We are huge water drinkers and they made sure we had water and my friends had plenty of drinks. They said everything was great and made fresh, which is not often during bottomless brunch. They did last call to make sure we could put our last orders in and all checked in on us multiple times. Always without a doubt one of my favorite resturants to visit. We have been here twice for dinner and this time we wanted to try their brunch/lunch. First, service is always amazing. Unfortunately, I forgot our server's name but wow. They made our experience during this fun hour so exciting! The server was highly attentive and was very quick to make conversation with us when they had the time. I would come back just for the service. Secondly, even when I thought the dinner menu was good, the brunch/lunch menu was better. Mainly every single item that we got was just to our liking. The ceviche was refreshing and citrusy. The shrimp ceviche had some sweetness coming from the shrimp but the sauce itself was just wow. My boyfriend hates seafood but this is first dish that he had ever had where he went back for more. The tacos, I mean you can just see how perfect they are. As for the churros, soft, crunchy, and drizzled with the perfect amount of caramel and chocolate. Ambiance for brunch/lunch is a lot different from dinner. The space is much more open with natural lighting and it makes you feel so welcomed and ready to have a good time. I have visited dLeña a handful of times, from visiting the beautiful dining area to the speakeasy on the ground level. This time I decided to do the chef's table for my birthday this summer and it was hands down the best experience. Carlos (Executive Chef) and Josh Gray (General manager) and team took great care of us. We were seated right behind the bar where we could see everything prepared. Many of the items on the chef's menu were new entrees for me but being we couldn't do any subs (which they tell you beforehand) we were excited to try new food. The surprising highlights were the wagyu tartare, the taco, blue crab, and grilled pork loin. You would think with the perfect seat, amazing service, and great entrees that was it, nope we ended the night with two surprise bags of goodies. I would hands down tell anyone to do this experience at least one in their life, the cost is worth it! read more

I recently came here for dinner, and finally have a verdict hence the review: Drinks are great but the food is mediocre at best with a small sprinkle of gems. The oysters are the best thing on the menu. Honestly, just order a couple serving and some drinks and then go. The oysters taste amazingg. In my book, first place in the DC area for taste, presentation, everything. All the other dishes I've tried here... heavy on the mediocre, some just plain bad. The first time I came here was for brunch and I remember it was mediocre. It's bottomless and I tried almost every dish and didn't feel inclined to order a second round of anything. It took me years to come back, but a friend suggested we go here for happy hour. Sat at the bar and ordered the oysters and drinks. It was great. I recently came here for dinner and did not care for any dish (except for the oysters). The potato doused in sauce did not taste good. You're pretty much just eating the sauce. I think my server was trying to steer me away from ordering it, but then the table next me said they liked it so I ordered it. I should've picked up on the signs and avoided this dish. The short rib tacos were just plain bad. Too much garnish and the flavors were fighting with each other and the sauce. I didn't think you could mess up tacos... with short rib... this badly, but somehow dLena did. I didn't finish the second taco. The hot stone wagyu barely gets an OK. I have heard nothing but amazing things about dLeña and I was not let down. 10 out of 10 experience. Make sure you go to the speakeasy downstairs before or after your dinner. You get a crazy underground vibe with live music as well. Everyone treats you like you're their best friend when you're here which kicks off the night perfectly. Cocktails were amazing but the food was even better! My favorite was the hot stone Wagyu and the Pork Belly for the appetizers. So flavorful, I could have about 10 of each and wouldn't get tired of them. I didn't want to stuff my face TOO much so I went with the Short Rib Al Carbon since it was a smaller portion and it was one of the best short ribs I've ever tasted in my life. I'm talking about tender and delicious, was soooooo good! We also tried the surf and turf which was fantastic as well. From the beautiful architecture to perfect mood lighting and comfortable seating, dLeña brings you to an oasis. I came for lunch and was immediately greeted and seated. Their menu has a 3 course lunch option and it appears that they have a bottomless brunch menu, as well (so I will be returning for that). I was pleasantly surprised! This is definitely not you're "run of the mill" corporate restaurant. This is a unique and artistic interior design. Definitely think it's perfect for a date night. First off, the vibe is totally dark and moody--you'll probably need your phone light to read the menu. The bar is huge and stylish, and the staff is super friendly. Be sure to ask them about the history of the restaurant! Now, onto the food. I was a bit taken aback by the $20 lobster empanadas, but I had to try them. They were filling and pretty good, but I don't think I'd order them again. Plurely for instagram lol. My husband got the lamb shank, and let me tell you--it was AMAZING. I had a few bites and definitely think it's shareable between two people, maybe even three as an appetizer. We ended up taking some leftovers home. As for drinks, my husband enjoyed several Mexican wines while I went for margaritas. Three margaritas for $21 felt like a steal in DC, especially considering the quality. This most recent time we went to dinner, but snagged the tail end of happy hour. We sat at the bar and grabbed some discounted margaritas. We ordered food from the dinner menu. The guacamole, tuna tostada, ceviche, and bone marrow and tuna chicharron. I didn't know what I was expecting from the tuna chicharron, but it essentially was fried tuna. It came with blue corn tortillas and a bunch of accoutrements. The bone marrow made the mini tacos insanely delicious. My favorite is definitely the tuna tostada with burst of flavors. I went for lunch and, given the beautiful day, sat outside. I had tacos, which is always my go-to Mexican food. The service was good, although a little slow, given that the place was packed. The food presentation was very nice--I liked that it came on a wood board. The margarita was good but not great (I always get a skinny margarita, which is basically tequila and lime juice--I could tell the lime juice was not freshly squeezed). Overall, the place and the food were good. However, I live on the other side of town, and it was just not great enough that I would be willing to go across town to eat here. If you are in the area, then it would be a great place for Mexican food. And I suspect the bar scene at night is pretty good. read more
