Sir-Loin is part of my weekly grocery shopping expedition. I'll start by having a bit of a sneaky peek at Sir-Loin, then head into the supermarket and see what the prices are. At that point, I'll remember that supermarket meat is generally pretty ordinary, and go out and grab some good stuff at Sir-Loin. I almost always grab a nice thick steak. Sometimes a porterhouse, sometimes a rump, sometimes something else. It's always pretty good, and the prices are more than reasonable. The guys and girls there are pretty personable and get on well with their customers. No complaints here.

The shop is often quite busy and runs on a number service system - make sure to grab a card from the counter or you'll be waiting a while. My Mum loves this place and is always popping in to get herself a treat for an afternoon snack or dessert platter. It is a great place to go to get some good nibblies for a party or special event. The staff are happy to put together a package for you without making you spend a fortune. Give them a try.

The staff here are very nice and the owner Darren has served me many times. The meats are quite varied compared to the selection in the supermarket and the prices are also a bit cheaper. My favourite product from there are bits of chicken breast wrapped in bacon. They are held together with a skewer and have yummy cheese in the middle. They are perfect for a quick dinner when you cannot be bothered cooking and are almost a staple food in my house! Once I had quite a few bags from Boococks and the staff member noticed I was struggling so they helped carry them out to my car - you can't beat that!

And given that these days, we seem to have very little time to do our shopping, it shouldn't be a surprise. However, a few years ago I rediscovered the butcher shop in Kerrie Road, Glen Waverley. I'd been watching a lot of cooking shows and decided that I'd try and cook with meat you don't have to unwrap from a plastic tub. One of the best things I ever did. The quality of the meats on offer is fantastic. The chicken breasts taste like chicken, not cardboard. The steaks are tender and they don't look dry and horrid like you find in supermarkets. The service is excellent. The staff are really friendly, always up for a chat, and if you're stuck for an idea of what to cook, they'll have a suggestion or two.

They are immensely cheaper than the Win Sam butcher on the opposite side of the road, and when you spend over $10 they give you free chicken bones! They also have a few freezers that contain prawns, dumplings and other Asian foods.

As well as daily bargains and specials they have special packs that are awesome value. I remember that Mum always tends to go for the $35 pack, which is the cheapest. (They range up to $195 and staff can customise packs for your needs) The $35 pack includes: - 1 kg Lamb Chops - 1 kg Topside Mince - 1 kg Chicken Fillets - 1 kg Meat-Loaf - 12 Rissoles. It is damn good value and the meat is really high quality. It always cooks well and it is fresh. Added to this are a heap of staff who are quick servers and very friendly and you have a winner. It even won the Mum stamp of approval...priceless!

This is the equal of the other store, and I happily buy most of my red meat here when I'm at Knox and don't have time to go to another smaller suburban butchery, just because it's so convenient. The prices are pretty decent, and I really like the steaks here. The chicken is alright, but if I'm at Knox, I'll usually stop at Lenard's. The service is good, better than most at Knox. The people are reasonably chatty, very friendly, and I've yet to have a bad experience.

This butcher doesn't like opening new trays that are in his display cabinet. Bought some loin chops…read moreand belly pork strips and I wanted precisely the cuts from trays in his display. The lady who served me was OK with that but the two blokes who I assume ran the place went on a cussing, staring episode. Plenty of other butchers around. I'm the customer. He puts the meat on display and I'm entitled to buy exactly the meat I want not what he thinks I should buy.

The chicken is always fresh and invariably tender when it's cooked properly. I sometimes buy whole chooks to roast, and the schnitzels are pretty decent too. That said, I do prefer it when I buy a breast fillet, tenderize it, and crumb it myself. The crumb on Lenards schnitzel (no, that's not a dirty euphemism) isn't as good as the one that I make. It's not bad though. The service is alright, and they tend to have a good number of staff on, so even when it's busy, you rarely wait long to get what you're after.

Yeah, there are other chicken shops nearby, but this place seems to have exactly what I need on special every time I go past. Like I said, the service is good, friendly and usually very quick. It does get busy from time to time, but it's really not too bad. I do like the marinated chicken for a quick and easy meal when I'm too busy to spend much time cooking.
