There's none of that agressive yelling you get at some of the other stalls, and the staff make a point of really being present when you're deciding what to buy. It really does make a difference in the buying experience. A word of warning: eating ethical and organic meat will cost you more so be prepared to curb your portion size unless you want to go broke. The other day I sent the other half to buy the meat while I bought the fish. He got 2 chicken breasts, 200gm of beef mince (we only needed a small portion for some samosas I was making) and 6 slices of bacon. The price? $30! I honestly had to check his receipt when we got home because I didn't believe it cost that much! Just as well the meat is great quality and delicious hey?

Bertie's, on the other hand, is different. Bertie's is more like a speciality food store - championing the 'paddock to plate' cause. They use free range meat and butcher the entire carcass - which means you can literally pick any cut you like and ask for help on how to prepare it. The same amount of thought is given to the condiments and accompanying food and booze - all very high quality and appear to be from local or speciality producers. What keeps me coming back though is their lunch offering. They make a daily selection of salads, usually vegetarian, but you can select a freshly cooked meat to add as accompaniment like pulled pork, roast turkey or lamb. In winter, they make deliciously rich soups that you almost need a knife and fork for.

Conveniently located on the GF in the Well in Camberwell next to Coles, Rainbow Meats offers a broad range of fresh and delicious products. The staff are very nice and knowledgeable. Rainbow's pricing is quite reasonable - you'd be able to pick up a massive piece of chicken for about $4 and a juicy Porterhouse Steak will cost you about $7. In addition to the plain traditional steaks, chicken breast, thighs, lamb rack, cutlets, sausages, angus burger patties etc; they also offer chicken breast marinated in breadcrumbs, sweet chilli pork meatballs (which look very tasty), kebabs and heaps more. If you're a Camberwell local or reside around the area, make sure to pay them a visit and have a look at what they have. It's worth it and, if you decide you like them and see yourself coming back, don't forget to get one of their loyalty cards. It allows you to earn points and redeem them for discounts later on.

They're the kind of butcher with a range of sausages that bring in flavour cobinations from around the world. And given that the sausages are about the only thing in the refrigerated glass cabinet that this browser can afford, that's what I'll invariably carry away down Normanby Avenue for an impromptu Sunday afternoon barbecue at mine. No, not right now, I'm working. On the occasion you feel like splashing out - birthdays, Christmas and the like - you could pretty much wave your hand over the chiller blindfolded and land on some sumptuous lamb chop of delicious cut of steak or pork chop. Mmm... Pork chops. More than this, it's a necessary part of the Normanby collective of speciality stores. Only trouble is, there are three other butchers withing a hundred metres... They also probably don't marinate their chicken wings in teriyaki sauce. But there is nothing that I can tell that particularly makes this butcher continental. The Continental Butcher doesn't really seem to offer anything other than what you can get at any supermarket or market stall. There is nothing particularly bad about the fact that this particular butcher is nothing too special. It is reasonably priced and I do prefer to buy from these guys rather than from the supermarket. It's just that I sometimes lament the fact that you can't get some more interesting cuts from butchers, as well as maybe some more interesting kinds of meat. When I first saw the sign mostly written in Greek with the only English words written "Continental Butcher" I guess I was expecting something a little bit rustic and old school.

Selling a standard range of different cuts of chicken, pork, beef etc, Continental also does a fine line in some pretty gourmet sounding sausages containing things like fennel and sundried tomatoes. The flavour? Pretty good for not-too-expensive sausages. A little gristley but good all the same. Ok, this place might not be glamour incarnate but when you're selling bits of dead animal razzamatazz isn't obligatory now is it?! A great local butcher; if you're a Northcote local you should check it out.
