Update 2025. While still convenient, the value proposition has eroded. Prices have increased significantly $80 for umbrella and chairs full day. No longer offering discount for multi-day rentals. Military rate increased to $50. The equipment has really aged and been neglected over the years without any reinvestment. The umbrellas are worn, torn, faded, and ripped. The chairs are worn and sagging with missing straps. The workers don't seem to care about much other than their screen time. I still recommend them, but it's a shame to see the decline in management engagement and customer experience. read more

Extremely rude!!!!! I was heavily pregnant coming out of the Hale Koa with 2 kids. My husband placed our bags down on the beach & went to the rental booth. A man and woman from the same rental booth came over to me and my children & told me to move immediately because this spot was reserved. Keep in mind I did not unpack anything or even sit down. I was standing there with our bags on the beach holding my kids hands. We waited there because it would not make any sense to walk to the booth with all our stuff just to walk back. Especially heavily pregnant. I told them my husband was actually at the booth right now about to rent. She said she did not care I have to move immediately. I told them I could not pick up all this stuff by myself & the woman said "it's okay I can wait for you to move" stood there staring at me incredibly upset. My husband came back and gave the man and woman our ticket, JUST TO BE PLACED RIGHT NEXT TO WHERE OUR BAGS WERE. There was also no one next to us or behind us. Made absolutely no sense. This is a nice place, it's right next to the beach and they handle the surfboards and umbrellas and chairs for you. It's really fun and a good price for everything. They do require a deposit but after that, they'll refund your deposit back to you when you return everything. The only reason I'm giving 3 stars is due to the experience on the water. My experience with the staff was not worth a single star. I rented a SUP and got to see a seal and 3 sea turtles in my hour! However, the staff spoke to me like I was annoying them when I inquired about rentals during a beach walk the day before. Then when I rented, they just sat at their stand and basically said, "there's the boundaries, there's the boards, be back in an hour." No help getting the boards in/out of the water. No guidance about what to do when done. I wish I had held off with my tip till the end. If you use their stand at the beach at Fort Derussy, Wakiki, be sure to hold off with your tip- if you're the kind of person who likes to tip for service and not out of obligation. read more

My family paid this company 1000$s of dollars over a few days span renting chairs and boards off them... while in the water I was swimming on one of the rental boards when a instructor who was doing a lesson didn't like where I was swimming I was pushing my son on the board to catch a wave like everyone else... while I was in the water he pushed the boy into the back of my head (he was a few feet behind me) causing him to hit me in the back of the head. When I came out of the water he asked if I was ok and I said no I am not you did that on purpose... he proceeded to tell me that's why I need lessons I shouldn't be out there... I had lessons already and was there for 15 min before this happened he proceeded to argue ... as I came inside multiple people told me he cursed at ppl for days and was rude he felt like he owns that stretch of beach for his lessons... when I got out of the water come to find out the back of my head was split open there company never came over to see if I was ok... I made the walk in clinic that day... the worst company I ever seen!!!! read more

On a recent visit to Honolulu I wanted to try and stand up paddle boarding. This location was in front of the Hale Koa hotel. So convenient as they had all the equipment right there. I didn't have anyone else to watch my stuff they had lockers for rental. They hauled the board out to the beach and gave me a quick overview how to stand up on the board. Also didn't have a watch for the 1 hour rental and they were very flexible if I went over on time. After the rental I wanted to go swimming but again I didn't have anyone to watch my stuff and wanted to rent the locker for an additional hour. They we very understanding and let me use the lock for additional time without charging me. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Prices were very fair and honest with no hidden fees. read more

Awesome and kind crew. They set up our umbrella outside the Hale Koa on the beach and we got two lounge chairs. The second day we rented, the chairs were broken. They replaced them, but the slats on one of the others broke and my husband only weighs 170. Overall, we were happy and grateful they were there to set up for us. THANK YOU! read more

I wanted to surf Waikiki on my trip, so I just went to the back of my hotel and asked. They no longer had any available, due to the time of day and the surf condition. So I just walked down the street and found this place. Very easy, I just rented the board for 1 hour and it was $20. They just keep my driver's license and I grab whatever board is there. I chose a long board and it had no wax on it, so I fell a lot. But at least I got to try. Very easy to rent and very accessible, so they get a good review. read more

Zero stars - Witnessed this employee cuss out a man she accused of shouting at her daughter- her daughter had been surfing without a leash and her board had hit the man's son in the head- instead of apologizing- she gets in his face - spews spit and cuss words- in front of all the kids - asking where he was from in a threatening tone - using her hand gestures and waving that head like she was on a reality show - the man calmly explained that her daughter should have a leash on her board and she flat out stated that her daughter did not need a leash - very inconsiderate and neglegent - then her man comes, accuses the man of theatening his daughter, grabs him and pushes him- the daughter finally admitted that there was no threat and they walked away without an apology- VERY DISTURBING to have these people run the show here in Waikiki- true Kamaaina are full of aloha - very disturbing to see locals act so ghetto with groundless animosity - hope they get to the root of their unhappiness- instead of trying to instigate fights- and what are they teaching their daughter? read more

I typically look up everything on Yelp, but unfortunately I did not do so before booking a surf lesson for my freshly turned 9-year-old son at Dive Oahu & Surf. My son had has only recently become a confident pool swimmer about 6 months ago, which I conveyed to the surf instructor. I also said that I wanted him to be on an 8 foot board, thinking that he would be catching white water and that there was no way they would bring him out to the break. Eventually two other adults who had booked a group lesson showed up, and despite my concerns, I assumed that they would not let him be in any danger. I was wrong. The instructor did help to tow his board as they paddled way out to the first break. The waves were bigger than they had been earlier in the day (way too big for a 10 foot hardtop surfboard), and the surfboard was way too big for my son. Thankfully his dad was out there with him (they did not make it all the way to the break), and they paddled back in. Luckily we had another adult ready to sub in for the rest of the session, or else we very likely would've lost our $125. These dudes should never, ever teach a mixed child and adult class (maybe if the kids are fearless 10-11+ year old Hawaiian water kids, but only in those rare cases). It was completely dangerous and reckless. We're lucky that he didn't get hurt just paddling out, and that our replacement adult student with prior surfing experience had a good session. read more

My husband and I rented 2 chairs and an umbrella This male employee was on the phone the whole time helping us, smoking while working and very disrespectful like he didn't want to help us. My husband and I watched him work for quite some time as he continued to be rude to others as well. He would sit down and smoke or go on his cellphone and stand back up when he had to do get something for someone. This customer service was Very unprofessional. The staff is so poorly trained; it's disturbing. Local authorities should investigate monopolistic access they have on the beach and negative experience visitors get to endure. I saw staff member walk over to a man and requests to move. Without apologies and then gave a lecture about paying for an umbrella. It was clearly rude and inconsiderate. We came to repair a buckle on a fin and the lady who helped us went out of her way to locate and old fin and agreed to switch the buckle, which saved us a lot of headaches and extra expense. I am a bit surprised with the negative reviews, but they are older. We had a great experience with the staff. My daughter took surf lessons and everyone from check in to the instructors were great. Highly recommend taking a lesson with them, they were very encouraging & offered lots of positive reinforcement and made sure to go over safety. There's also someone that takes photos while you're out there surfing. She didn't pressure you into making a purchase. They have rash guards to put on. I'm not sure if you're required to wear theirs but if you aren't I would recommend to purchase your own as they smelled but definitely not a deal breaker. We also wanted to rent chairs and an umbrella but they were booked at the time, understandably so because it was the 4th of July. I checked multiple times throughout the day because my daughter was surfing and when done we wanted to lounge around. When a spot opened up, they found me, something they did not have to do but very much appreciated. Would definitely use their services again. read more

We have not used Dive Oahu services as a customer but had an awful experience with their employees. We have selected a spot at Waikiki beach in the shade. Dive Oahu has some cones reserving their spot for surf boards and we were outside that area. An employee that were taking away the boards because was close to 5pm, approached my wife asking her to move which she agreed to do although she was outside the "reserved" area. He moved the cones and asked her to move more otherwise she would get hurt. She told him that he moved the cones and would not move again. She was outside the cone area. Than this employee started moving the boards and twice purposely almost hit my wife in the face with the board. She protected her face and starting filming after that he stopped and a different employee approached her. At this time I arrive from the beach with the kids. The young lady at the register was laughing about the situation. The surfing instructor arrived and approached me and apologize and told us that other people saw this employee purposely trying to hit my wife. I appreciate the instructor behavior and apology but they need to better select their employees. Starting with the guy that was moving the boards and the lady on the register. We have been traveling around the world and never faced a situation like that in Waikiki. Again, as a lawyer we could have escalated the situation pretty quick but did not want to spend vacation time dealing with unprofessional employees from Dive Oahu Surf. Based on this situation I will never use their services if come back to Waikiki. Shame this kind of behavior in a place that cultivate Ohana!!! read more

It is super convenient location, but I was really unimpressed with the fact that as we came in from surfing to reapply sunscreen, one of the instructors took my son's board from right in front of us as a "floater board" for his lessons and told us to go get another board from the counter. No apology or anything! I've never rented anything from anybody where they've come taken it mid-rental and just told me to go get a new one. That's messed up! read more

I've had surf lessons before, and just having taught things in general, you can always have a spirit of positive energy for all students and that will always increase results and overall happiness for all. As others have mentioned here, steer clear of this company. The owner is downright rude and threatens people with lawsuits if they so much as accidentally sit down on one of the chairs on the public beach. He ranted and raved about "knowing his rights and threatened us for trespassing" despite it being a public beach in broad daylight.
