This place is garbage. I spent a month there (Chino Hills location; I'm not sure if this page is specifically for that, but I assume these problems persist more generally as well). I will start off by saying that the level of attention to patients, the facilities, and the food are really outstanding and if a parent or person seeking mental health help care about these attributes (attributes that I, as a person who has attended several mental rehabilitation centers, know are very important), then Discovery is actually a really sound choice. However, this place needs to deal with some severe problems; the therapists are ridiculously underqualified and I severely doubt the qualifications of the woman who runs it, Heather, because she could not even answer the most simple questions about specific mental health disorders that any psychology or neuroscience undergrad could answer, or really anyone who reads any contemporary, peer-reviewed papers on mental health. I was absolutely admonished as an individual with bipolar disorder for sleeping in past 8AM, even though I told them, every single day, that following my natural sleep cycle is the only and most effective way to control my disorder. Even with medication, without proper sleep, I was hopeless. I printed out articles for them to read on the subject, but they refused. Despite doing all my art and worksheets, I was unable to attain certain basic privileges, like using headphones, two weeks into the program, simply because I slept until 9:00 and did not participate in their early morning "exercises," while I was having side effects from medications that would prevent me from doing them safely in the first place. Eventually I just took my headphones, so the joke's on them. The therapist Sarah is absurdly underqualified in terms of her knowledge and abilities and lied to me on several occasions, which was confirmed by others, and, as anyone with mental health challenges knows, petty, sloppy lies from a therapist is not really a foundation upon which trust is based. Girls come there with eating disorders, seeking help for underlying depression and anxiety, and the amount of pretzels or peanut butter we had as snacks was measured or counted. Ridiculously obvious flaw. The upside is that all of the counselors there, whom you spend most of your time with, are amazing and mostly masters students in counseling or social welfare, I believe, and they made my time there pleasant, in addition to the other girls, with the exception of one. Heather and Sarah need to read more and reexamine if they are really in the right place for them, for the sake of their patients. read more
