This review is LONG overdue for this specific location. We had our son at the other location a few miles down the road and it was a complete disaster. We transferred our son to this location and what a breath of fresh air. Melinda the principal is AMAZING! She genuinely cares about each child enrolled here and their families. I can't sing enough praise about her and her leadership. The admin has also been great and are so on top of everything (Jessica and Angela). Our son was in the infant room and we had NO issues and knew our son was in great care. Even with COVID on the rise, I feel safer than ever sending my son back here. The staff has implemented a lot of protocol to ensure the kids are safe and my son has been so happy playing his his friends again. They have been extremely communicative and adaptable during these times and I know any child walking through that door will be in great hands. Definitely don't think twice about enrolling your child here. read more

Worst experience with the Poway Ted Williams location. We were frequently called to pick up our child, sometimes simply because he couldn't fall asleep during nap time. This felt excessive and showed very little flexibility or understanding of normal child behavior. There also didn't seem to be much focus on learning or development during his time there. I would strongly encourage other parents to carefully evaluate whether this location is the right fit. read more

Our daughter attended Discovery Isle for two amazing years. All her teachers were wonderful, but Ms. Mahnoosh deserves a special shout‑out. She is kind, loving and so patient and my daughter absolutely adores her. Admin team, Ms. Brittany and Ms. Sabrina are amazing at their job. The thought that I had sent my daughter to this preschool hurts my heart. When we first had our tour and the initial meeting with my daughter's teachers, I felt fine. The teachers my daughter were assigned to were nice and we spoke about my daughter having a speech delay and how they can assist with her speech development. The teachers had really good ideas and intentions which made me felt warm and trusted. I also felt my daughter bonded with them nicely. Two weeks later one of the teacher said she was leaving Discovery Isle because she found a better opportunity at a different preschool. (That should have given me the red flag). As this teacher was transitioning out, they hired a new teacher and this was where everything went from okay to my worse nightmare. When I met the new teacher, she pulled me aside and asked about my daughter's speech, and I told her, she does have a speech delay, we are working with her pediatrician and getting her in speech therapy. The teacher told me her "suggestion," say if your daughter wants something example water - do not give it to her unless she says water. That comment was so disturbing to me because I know I signed a form that states the teachers and staff would not withhold anything from our children. I brought this comment to admin and they told me that she is a new teacher and that they are going to train her and set-up a meeting between all three of us to review the standard procedures and best practices. After that conversation there were no follow-ups. The teacher acted like nothing happened. So in my view, I'm not sure if the conversation even happened between the teacher and the admin team. The last thing that truly broke my heart to see was during pick-up, when they were "having my daughter go potty" my daughter was still in pull-up at the time. I understand at this age the school wants to children to be as independent as possible, but they had my daughter sit on the ground on her bare bottom to get her pull-up on. I asked the teacher, if they can at least have her sit on the toilet to assist with changing her pull-up or a liner or a chair. Just something other than the ground. The teacher blankly stared and told me that was how they were trained and that they have too many kids to take care of so they cannot help my child to put on her pull-up along with any other children who has diapers/pull-up in the class. At this point I am heated and I went to the admin and ask what were their standard procedures for diaper changing. The assistant principal told me that they had changed pads and lines and such. I told her NONE of that was happening. I told her they had my daughter on the ground on her BARE BOTTOM changing her own pull-up. The next day I walked in to the school with my daughter, the assistant principal told me she brought some liners to the classroom and that she is going to have to order more, because they are going to have to waste more now that are going to have to line the floor for each child. I told her it is not a matter of waste, it's a matter of hygiene and keeping our children safe. Aside from all this mess the worse feeling is that I cannot believe I had to let my own daughter experience this. read more

Nut Allergy Sufferers listen!!! My daughter has a severe nut allergy. We were upfront w staff and assured they had experience dealing w allergies. Vice principal Jenn had milk allergy herself we were reassured. One day we got the dreaded call, "Your daughter's eyes are puffy. She might have been exposed to nuts". The picture they sent looked as if both her eyes were punched. She looked worse than a fighter after several rounds. Now I'll be the first to admit it wasn't their fault. This is clearly not a nut free school. We immediately drove to take her to a Dr. my mind was racing. What happened when? These details could be crucial to my daughters survival. We called the office asking for timeline. I asked specifically to have timeline sent to me via email. I didn't trust my state of mind to remember all the minor details. I wanted the Dr to have to most accurate information possible. Nothing was ever sent. We spoke for literally hours about procedure for next time. Simple request, something that details timeline for medical team. Again contact w peanuts. Again nothing. We knew it was not safe for my daughters well being. We pulled her out immediately after the 2nd event. read more

I had my son there when he was as young as 8 weeks old. This school treats you like family; they took care of not only my son but his father and I as well. Mrs. Melinda, Ms. Brittney, and Ms. Brina are amazing! Mrs. Melinda helped the process of having my little one start, she would reassure me that everything was okay. The whole school took to my son as if he were their own. I am not sure where we would be if it hadn't been for Discovery Isle. I wish I could give 1,000,000 Stars! The HARDEST thing in the world is leaving your young child (especially if it is your first) for 8-10 hours a day, 5 days a week while you work. Discovery Isle on Ted Williams Parkway was the BEST experience I have had while having my daughter enrolled in a preschool. My favorites about the school: 1.) The Principal, Melinda, and Assistant Principal, Jen, are ABSOLUTELY the most kind, accommodating and caring pair of people I have ever known. They always are so easy to talk to, and genuinely care about the child and the well-being of the family. You can ALWAYS expect a friendly "Hello" and conversation when you enter in the morning and leave after picking up your child. 2.) The amount of care teachers put into communication between the teacher, parent and child. The school uses every form of communication that is possible for every reason! For the good (letting you know your child stopped crying after they were dropped off) and the bad (informing you that your child tripped and fell and got a boo-boo). Sometimes my daughter has rough Mornings and although it makes me somewhat uneasy, I know I will receive a photo or call to let me know she was doing great and having a wonderful day. Often, I would receive pictures via email to show me what she was doing and how happy she was. 3.) I love how much effort all of the teachers put into their classrooms. My daughter's teacher, every day would write out on a piece of paper of what the class did that day and hang it in parent's view for their convenience. I would often pick up my child and have super cute art projects and photos to pick up as well as the monthly folder the teacher works too hard on. Every room is prideful and very fun to look at. I love seeing my child's photos and art all over their class! 4. A secure building!! Each family has their own passcode to get into the building. This location has tall, safe fences around the entire school and I feel my child is 110% safe there! Added extras: PLENTY of play space, effective discipline techniques, HAPPY children, trusting teachers, months filled with fun activities for the kids and families, and the teachers are awesome at potty training! :-) Definitely schedule a tour as they are ALWAYS welcoming new children to enroll and are ALWAYS willing to accommodate and help you any way they possibly can! I LOVE this school, and I cannot wait to bring my 2.5yr old back!!!!! read more

We enrolled our son at Discovery Isle Ted Williams starting as an infant (8 months old), and watched him thrive as he aged and moved through the classrooms. He always wanted to go to school and when we picked him up each day he was a chatterbox about what activities they did. Mostly he talked about his time on their playground, but the teachers came up with some incredible activities in the classroom too. He bonded so well with all his teachers that it was so tough leaving each classroom and moving to the next teacher. We were in 4 different classrooms before we moved out of state and all the teachers we experienced were phenomenal. My wife and I are very happy with Discovery Isle. This is our third day care in less than three years and this one has been head and shoulders above the rest. Previous day cares could not handle the frequency of our daughter's tantrums or potty accidents. Previous day cares said they did not have the staff to deal with her because of the one on one attention that she required. We came to Discovery Isle pessimistic that things could be different. Discovery Isle has been incredible. Our daughter has been excelling at school and she has made noticeable strides in her development. She is sleeping well now and her behavior is under control. They have taken the pressure off of potty training so even though she still has accidents, it's stress free. We love Melinda and Jenn. We have a new born that starts in April and we're confident that this will go smoothly as well. read more

As our child is getting ready to graduate we have loved our time here. The principal (Melinda) and front office staff (Angela & Jessica) are all amazing. They go above and beyond to help out with any issue big or small. They respond to emails, calls and have a cool app that sends daily pictures and notices of your kid. The teachers are all so amazing and the kids love them. The biggest thing I've noticed is no recognizable turnover. When our other child went to a different school there was much more and the fact that the teachers seem to stay means they are doing something right. I couldn't be happier with our time there. I absolutely love this daycare. The principle and vice principle are so friendly and accommodating. Everyone that works in my sons classroom is lovely to deal with. I really feel like my son is loved and cared for. Aside from just the great feelings I have about this place, they are also very organized! Everything is always in order and and everything that the kids do during the day is reported. I love getting my sons full report at the end of the day, it helps me easily jump in where they left off. Even in times when they have had interent issues, they took the time to hand write everything! I also love all the activities that they do with the babies. My son is 8 months now and he has done so many fun things there... painting/music/story time/water play time... etc... This place is clean, safe, friendly and educational. I've been debating about leaving this update for a few months. My oldest went off to kinder leaving my youngest here for another year. My experience with this school only got worst. I ended up requesting a meeting with the director which took well over a month to get and only happened after I practically begged for one in many emails. It was my intention to enroll my son in their program for the additional days I have him because he was having issues with so many transitions (2 homes, 2 schools, that's a lot!) I felt that even though the program's philosophy wasn't as developmentally appropriate as I would of liked, having him at the same school mon-fri would be in his greatest interest. My goal as a parent! I ended up meeting with the director and the assistant director. They made a few accusations about my partner, tried to convince me to take down my review, and point blank keep calling my partner my "friend". This is despite my many, very kind requests to refer to her as my "partner" (now fiancé) they told me that they are full and that they would put him on the waitlist. They also told me that if anyone called out he could drop in on additional days. We parted peacefully and I requested an email follow up. The email never came so I send them one outlining what we agreed to (the drop in days). They never responded and I never got a call about any openings. It's been months so I find it hard to believe that no one called out, not even out sick. At the end of it all I walked away in tears, feeling judged, discriminated against and lied to. I'm working on my masters in education, I've been in the education field for over 10 years and I'm always reading up on latest research and best practices. I would never let a parent walk away feeling like their "lifestyle" or concerns were not important. I always try to act on what is in the best interest for the child. I consider myself an advocate for children and as I advise all parents, I'm an advocate for my own child. We are still here going on our second year. We have been more than happy with the new teachers (my son moved up to the 3YO room), principal and everything else. Melinda is still the amazing principal and now they have a new asst principal as the former AP was promoted to principal at a different DI. They teach letter and numbers but also give plenty of time for free play. They have a structured day but no so structured that things are inflexible. My son was out for a minor surgery and the teachers called me themselves to check in to make sure he was doing well. Again, very happy here! read more

I highly recommend Discovery Isle -- Ted Williams Parkway. I have had experience with other Discovery Isle locations and it really comes down to the principal/assistant principal as well as the teachers. This one just feels like a real school, and like one other reviewer mentioned, a big happy family. Danielle T. pretty much said everything I would say. I have two children here and trust that my children are in good hands, learning social skills, and learning the basics needed for kindergarten. It is great to keep them on a schedule as I believe children do really well with knowing what to expect and when. Take a tour and you will see for yourself what a great school it is!! By the way, we have been here for over 15 months now. I have done a lot of research into nannies and private in-home daycares as well as other schools, and the only other school I can highly recommend is Bright Horizons -- Kids on Broadway in downtown San Diego, but that one is extremely hard to get into unless you are a Federal or State employee as these families get preference on the waiting list. I have been on that waiting list for 3+ years. Hope this helps anyone searching for childcare in the PQ/Poway/Carmel Mtn areas. read more

After having an unpleasant experience at a different daycare, we were very cautious and weary about daycare in general, but having our daughter at this location changed everything for us in all the best ways! I can truly say that every teacher at this location is spectacular! We love Miss Jasmine, Miss Ashley, Miss Amanda, and so many more! My daughter always has the biggest smile on her face when I pick her up, full of so much to say! The Discovery Isle on Ted Williams Parkway is a school our family cannot recommend enough! Our son attended this school from the time he was 4 months old and in their infant room up until he was 5 years old and heading off to Kindergarten. Our daughter has been going since she was 3 months old and is currently turning 4 and heading into their Pre-K classes. The staff has become a second family and we truly would not consider any other place to take care of and to educate our children. Prior to deciding on Discovery Isle, we toured at least 15 other options in the area. Like most first time parents, we wanted a place that felt like home and a staff that welcomed us with genuine and heartfelt care. Discovery Isle Ted Williams was that place and more! Prior to heading off to Kindergarten, our son had made some lifelong friends (he is now 8 and still is very close with a group of boys he grew up with at Discovery Isle), had worked with some amazing teachers, and was reading BEFORE he started Kindergarten. Our daughter ADORES her teacher, has gained so much confidence, and ASKS to go to school on the weekends. Consider the tuition an investment in your child and your family's future. It is worth it and you will watch your child blossom and grow during their time here! read more

They send daily pictures so we know what happens throughout the day. They do so many creative projects and expose the children to a variety of learning tools. It took my husband and me several months and a couple of bad experiences to find this gem and we are so happy that we did. When I went back to work, we decided to hire a nanny so our daughter could get some one on one attention. Unfortunately, we had some bad experiences with a couple of people who had great references and a lot of experience. One nanny gave called in sick during the second week and told me that our daughter was trying to manipulate her by crying (she was five months old!). Another nanny quit after one week because she found a better offer. We then tried a home day care and felt that we didn't have any communication about how our young daughter was doing. When we dropped her off, she was taken from us at the door and when we picked her up she was always crying and was packed up and ready to go which made it feel like there was no transparency with what was going on. We had avoided facilities like this because I thought that smaller options would be better, but I was so wrong. When I drop my daughter off, she is greeted warmly. She cried when I left for the first couple of months, but she was always being held and comforted by someone while she cried and I was assured that it is perfectly normal for babies to do this and that she will be just fine. Eventually she adjusted to the new environment and doesn't cry in the mornings any more. The classroom is very welcoming and I can peek through the window in the door to watch her for a couple of minutes when I go to pick her up and play with her for a few minutes before we leave. When I pick her up she is eating with her friends, finishing up a nap, having circle time with a teacher and some of the other kids, or just playing with the toys while the teachers change diapers and prepare for the next activity. I really like the infant room at Ted Williams Parkway. One side of the room is for babies up to 12 months. When my daughter was on this side, she was on her own schedule and teachers would feed her, play with her, and put her down for a nap based on her needs. When she turned a year she moved to the other side of the room where the 12-18 month olds are on a schedule for snacks, circle time, outside time, meals, and naps. I really liked the flexibility because when my daughter was about ready to transition to this side she got to go outside with the the 12-18 month olds (which she loved!) if she was in play mode. All of the teachers are really sweet, reassuring, and inform me about how she is doing. Leaving my daughter was not easy, but I feel so relieved that she is in a safe place and is able to take part in activities like art projects, story time, and playground time while I am at work. I also love that I am emailed a daily report about her every day that document when and what she ate, when and for how she napped, and it usually includes a couple of pictures from the day which is always fun. read more

I researched many and toured more than a handful of preschools before deciding on Discovery Isle TWP. My decision was based on a brief tour with the principal, Mrs. Carvalho, and one conversation with a teacher. I knew right away that it was a place I would feel comfortable leaving my children; because of the friendly and experienced staff, the large and covered playground, and that the facilities were clean and safe. My children are now in their third year there and my experience has only confirmed my gut feeling of that first tour. The office staff always make sure to communicate important information and often show care and concern above and beyond school-day issues. Now with the Tadpoles app, we get photos daily and are updated with class calendars, school events, and reminded other important information often. As a working mom who can't be with my children all day, I appreciate knowing that their teacher will hug them, fix a fallen-out braid, give a band-aid when they have an "owie," and make their learning fun. I am in awe of the things they are learning with the most creative dramatic play spaces and lessons in class, and what the girls can recite when they get home. I now have a hard time at pick-up because my girls don't want to leave. My one daughter has recently outgrown her allergy, but was allergic to peanuts her first two years at DI. I felt very comfortable with her at school. I know for sure her classroom teachers were aware, and took it into consideration often by telling other parents not to bring items that contained peanuts (for holidays or class parties) to share with students. I happened to witness one afternoon, her teacher (politely as possible) hand a bag of goodies back to a parent and refuse to pass them out because they might contain peanuts. I'm confident in saying the entire staff at DI TWP is exceptional. I'm so thankful we found this learning center for my children, and I will continue to recommend it to others at every opportunity. read more

As the parent of an infant who was to be enrolled in day care for the first time, I was highly disappointed with the service my family received at this center. After my son's first 4 hour "Discovery Day" the first thing his teachers said to me upon my return to the center was "Do you hold your son a lot at home?" I found this loaded question to be completely off putting and disheartening. They followed up their question by saying that they felt he was "just mad" about being there and that they were going to encourage him to self sooothe. Again, this was after his first four hours EVER in daycare. While we anticipated a rough transitional period, they were not understanding or empathic to the fact that he was confused and scared about being in a new environment surrounded by strangers. They did not express how they would try to make a difficult transition easier. They did not offer words of encouragement or reassurance. As a parent, this conversation left me highly doubting the center's policies and how they would support our family and our childcare needs. After a long conversation with my husband, we decided to give the center a second try. The next morning, I spoke with the Principal, Melinda, and she said she could see where her staff were coming from, but that they would try a more gentle approach with him. The staff also admitted that it was a poor choice of words. I felt somewhat better. Upon my return after his second Discovery Day, I was very concerned and distraught over his safety when I noticed a large purple welt above his right eye and no one could tell me what happened. My son was in their care for 6 hours and not one person noticed the swelling on his eyebrow. The best responses I got from the Assistant Principal were: "Maybe that's what happens when he cries" (because in 14 months, I never noticed something so obvious that only happens on one side of his face) and "well, his teachers can't tell his sad cry from his hurt cry" Neither of these were making me feel confident in their abilities to care for my son. Needless to say, this was not the right center for us. I think promoting a strong bond with a new primary care giver should be the top priority of an infant teacher, not discussing promoting independence through self soothing after just meeting a child.. My theory is that if you can't be bothered to hold and comfort my child then you don't deserve to be his caregiver. I hope the staff gets the retraining they need on how to interact with parents correctly in order to hopefully avoid repeating the same unfortunate experiences my family had to endure. read more

our little one has been here for over 4 months now and i trust them 1000000% taking care of him while i'm at work. i love all the teachers and the administration staff. they are super communicative and sweet and helpful and patient! for example, my baby absolutely hated the bottle when he first started daycare but they worked patiently with him day after day until he was a pro! when we were struggling with starting solids, they gave great suggestions and now it's amazing how much he eats. when baby started having separation anxiety when we dropped him off, they would quickly soothe him or distract him. we also use cloth diapers and they've been super accommodating with that. i love all the little art projects that they do (even with babies!) and they send home pictures and progress reports so i know how he's measuring up on their curriculum charts. they have lots of toys and books and activities to stimulate little minds and they're always working with the babies on tummy time and achieving milestones (such as grasping, sitting, crawling, hand eye coordination, etc). i tend to pick my son up near closing time (their hours are from 6:45am-6pm) and i usually see them cleaning up and sanitizing and washing toys and things for the next day, so i know that they're definitely making sure things are clean! they've also just installed a new security code system at the front door as an extra precaution, which is great for peace of mind. i honestly can't say enough good things about them, and we're really glad to have them around! read more

My kids have been in the 2's class through private Kindergarten in this school and it's been great. They have loved all their teachers and are happy to go to school each day. The principal and office staff are very warm and friendly, they know your name and your kid's name. This place is just awesome. As a parent of an only child, 2 year old little girl, we felt it was time to to get her around other kids and a more social environment. Being a first time mom I visited numerous preschools in the area and this discovery isle really stood out as it seemed more of a preschool setting versus day care. I was a little nervous leaving our daughter there the first day being it was the first time she was in a school setting and without family or a nanny, but she did great! The 2-3 year old class has been wonderful for her. Miss Becca and Miss Brittany have been very supportive and caring for our daughter since day one. They've done a wonderful job of walking that fine line between nurturing our child without over-coddling her. The kids play, do all sorts of projects, have presentations, learn basics, it is wonderful seeing our child interact with other adults and children. The teachers are also on it and make sure they communicate any issues with the parents, and on the flip side have been super responsive to any concerns or tips that we communicated with them. The saying " it takes a village" is so so true. It's been great teamwork between us and the school and that has made me very happy. The principal and assistant principal, Melinda and Jennifer, and the the office staff Sadaaf are all so energetic, happy to be there and easy to talk to. Definitely the type of people I look for when I am thinking of who I want my child around! Our daughter has benefited so much from this school, we are extremely sad to have to leave due to moving to a different area, but we had such a great experience here, that we've enrolled her in another discovery isle closer to our new home. We hope it will be just as good as the Ted Williams location! We have had a very happy girl during our time here, which makes for very happy parents! :) I am very comfortable giving a great recommendation for this school to prospective parents. read more

Melinda and her staff are amazing. We love Discovery Isle and wouldn't take our son anywhere else. Our son has been going to school here for almost two years and all his teachers are great with the kids. I know when I bring him to school that he is learning, having fun and is safe. You will not find a better, more loving and nurturing environment for your little ones than Discovery Isle Ted Williams. Both my sons attend this school - we've experienced classes from 18m thru Pre-K - and I could not wish for more from them. Every member of staff there has all the time in the world for you and your child, and everyone makes you feel so welcome from Day 1. They are super accommodating when you need to make changes or have last-minute requirements too - you won't meet kinder, more wonderful people than Melinda and Jen. I personally love the structure and curriculum they follow - it's why I chose this preschool and not a daycare - and I know that this is the best possible start for my boys before they move on to kindergarten and beyond. My 2yo even learns Spanish in a fun, appropriate way for the age group. As well as their weekly-themed learning programs, they enjoy ample playtime inside and out, learn how to socialize with their peers and treat others with respect, and are being molded into the most amazing human beings. Wanna know who's doing that? The fantastic teachers. They are communicative about your child's day EVERY DAY. It may be a phone call, an email with a cute photo, take-home projects and artwork, the beautifully hand-written notice on the door to let you know what they did today, or a chat with them at pick-up, or all of the above! Oh, and the monthly folders and progress reports three times a year. These teachers work SO HARD to make every day an amazing experience for your child, and I know how lucky we are to have them in our lives. They are super stars. I highly recommend Discovery Isle (DI) to all parents and/or families who need child care, preschool, or Kindergarten for their children. I enrolled my son about 2 months ago and he is absolutely loving it! Every single day he says "Mommy, I love my new school!". Nothing more comforting than hearing that every day! Prior to attending DI, my son went to another 'well known' daycare and, regrettably, I wish I had enrolled my son at DI from the get go. The staff, the teachers, everyone at DI is absolutely amazing. They are so friendly and accommodating. I love the level of communication the teachers have with parents via one-on-one conversations and the month-end progress reports/folder take-homes. I truly feel the teachers care about their students and are in-tune with each child's individual developmental level of learning. The curriculum is above par, the projects my son brings home are creative, and the social/life skills being taught are invaluable. DI is paving a path of success for my little guy when he attends Kindergarten at a public school this fall. I am incredibly grateful and appreciative to DI and its amazing staff for everything that they do. read more
