This review is not for Discover Vision itself, but for Dr. Loren Beek, the best eye doctor I've seen in 30 years, and the only one who has ever been really helpful, knowledgeable, and willing to listen regarding Dry Eye Syndrome, as he deals with it himself. He's very personable, cares about his patients, and takes the time to explain things. I've greatly appreciated the samples he's provided to treat Dry Eye. When he let me know this time that there may be a promising new treatment in the works, it gave me hope that my years of almost constantly red eyes could end. While my insurance allows me to see him for specific 'medical' eye problems or symptoms, unfortunately it will no longer cover an appointment with him or other doctors at Discover Vision to have my eyes checked and refraction for glasses. read more

I am truly grateful for incredible patient care offered by Dr Lile and the rest of the Discover Vision Centers Leawood Kansas team. I have been a patient of this practice since 2007. the waiting area might be full when I arrive, but once I greeted by Beth at the front desk, it makes me feel like I'm DVC's only patient. Their office visit costs are very reasonable; Dr Lile has even given me his business card with cellphone number to contact him if I ever experience any difficulties with my contacts or glasses. I had LAL cataract surgery. Surgery was good, it was the aftermath that was HORRIBLE!. The lens adjustment follow up appointments, each time I had a different eye doctor who has to take the time reading your chart for the eye exam prior to adjustment procedure. Plus it makes me feel uncomfortable having to deal with a new doctor each time, not knowing who they really are. I would expect I would be scheduled to see my original eye doctor who is also the eye doctor who completed the surgery and who knows the eye history. This is NOT the case. There is NO consistency. Several adjustments are performed over a number of weeks to fine tune the vision. My story took 8 months. These doctors didn't listen when I mentioned that 2 out of the 4 adjustments on one of my eyes, I didn't see the UV light which you should since its changing the lens prescription to fine tune your vision to the patient needs. I saw black. Their response was that they saw my eye on their end. That doesn't help me on my end since I'm the one that wants the corrected vision. These doctors told me during the journey you only get 4 adjustments per eye. This was not communicated prior to the surgery. On my other eye all 4 adjustments I saw the UV light and that eye doesn't have an issue. During the adjustments you look through light delivery device machine which goes in increments of .25. I found this out by being my own advocate and researched this information from an article published by Pacific Cataract and Laser Institute. These doctors didn't listen to my vision needs and marked it down on my chart as receiving 4 adjustments on each eye. I kept telling them during the adjustment period that I just need a small tweek then it will be all good. A small tweek as doing a trial and wearing a +.25 contact in the one eye. That made everything so focused. This didn't happen. They forced me to lock in the vision. When you do that, you are stuck with the vision after the 4 adjustments and its then too late to correct it. As of today, I'm stuck wearing a +.25 contact lens in one eye in order for me to see anything up close / near. This should NOT be the case since I never had to depend on glasses or contacts prior to cataract surgery. So be very cautious in choosing your eye care needs. read more

My mother was here for her eye surgery due to her diabetes to get her vision corrected. I love the staff in the surgery department. They are very friendly and professional but took very good care of my mother. When she had to come back for a follow-up the next day, they was really friendly and nice but quick to take her in and she was out in 10 minutes. On her second surgery on her other eye two weeks later, same great service in the surgery department. When we came back the next day for her follow-up, it was so hot outside and I was so thirsty. While my mother sign-in at the front desk, I asked the front desk staff if there were any cold water. They told me they didn't have no cold water but pointed to a sink and told me to get water out of the sink. They were not so friendly and helpful at all. Who wants to drink water out of a sink they wash their coffee pots and hands in there? I didn't understand why there were no cold water fountain in this nice luxury clinic. I hope I am not treated any differently because of my skin color. The weather is getting hot and cold water is a must in every clinic if you care about your clients to stay hydrated. read more

I had Lasik surgery here in December 08. I've waited at least 90 days to give my full review. But at this point I can say I'm very happy. Dr. Doane was my surgeon. He was extremely knowledgeable(big understatement) and very pleasant, which had a wonderful calming effect. This is not a budget Lasik center. They tested my eyes backwards and forwards before the surgery. They have provided excellent follow up care in conjunction with my optometrist. A few words on the surgery. It is surgery and you should treat it as such. It's not as casual as getting a cap on your tooth and off you go as if nothing happened. As my eyes have healed I've experienced temporary halos and dry eyes. This is normal and they informed me of this. Now 90 days later I have no problems except the occasional dry eye. It has worked out for me. If you decide to do it, good luck and research, research, research. read more

I have permanent vision damage, courtesy of Doctor's John F Doane, Lon S Eudaly & the Discover Vision Center of Leawood, Kansas. Due to heavy astigmatism, I'd worn corrective lenses since the first grade. During a Discover office visit in 2017, I was diagnosed with "extremely light" cataracts - lens replacement was considered cosmetic & not required. I was referred to Dr. John Doane. I let him know I'd torn my left retina during my teens & undergone a reparative procedure. John informed my wife & I everything looked great & recommended Discover's $6000 full focus lens package. These lenses would replace my natural lenses & eliminate or reduce the need for corrective lenses. During one pre-surgery test, a tech stated I had "one of the longest eyes she'd ever seen." One month after John Doane replaced my natural lenses, my left retina was torn & I was in danger of permanent blindness. Rewinding to the initial lens replacement surgery: staff wheeled me to post-op & stated everything went well. I mentioned my left eye was now completely blind - staff responded blurred vision was common. I re-stated (loudly) "I am now completely blind!" Staff wheeled me back for more surgery - partial vision returned shortly thereafter. While I was in recovery, John told my wife he'd relieved some pressure but refused to elaborate. My vision remained blurred. During one of several follow up visits, I met with Discover optometrist Lon Eudaly. Lon's office notes state: Patient states that vision in OD (right eye) is good, while vision in OS (left eye) is blurry - the patient sees halos & DB (double) vision in the OS. Patient states OS (left eye) seems darker...patient also experiences lots of glare as well as headaches. Later, I learned these symptoms are typical signs of a torn retina. Lon did not refer me to a specialist. Despite my medical history, he prescribed more eye drops & scheduled Lasik touch up surgery. Weeks later, my wife discussed my symptoms with her personal optometrist. He stated Lasik surgery sounded both dangerous & ludicrous. I returned to Discover the following day & pleaded my case. Lon referred me to Dr. Ajay Singh. Dr. Singh informed me my left retina had was torn, I was in danger of permanent blindness & scheduled emergency surgery. In simplest terms, Dr. Singh removed my eye, sewed my retina back on, sewed a belt around my eye & stuffed everything back in my head. I was given a topical anesthetic & remained awake during this painful surgery. I was off work for six weeks, instructed to remain inactive & stay on my side. I was allowed to watch T.V. but could not read or write. It was a bad month & a half. Four years later, I deal with headaches, shooting lights & light sensitivity. My remaining vision is compressed & blurred. I lost peripheral vision & tend to trip over unseen objects. Experts agree - the damage is permanent. John Doane eventually admitted to us those individuals with a previously torn retina are prone to re-tears, as are those with longer eyes - both apply to me. The longer it takes to repair a retinal detachment, the less likely it is that vision will return. Despite my medical history, voiced concerns & the data contained in Eudaly's office notes, a retinal tear was not diagnosed (nor even mentioned) until four weeks following Doane's lens replacement. In 2001, John F Doane co-authored a book titled Refractive Surgery, A Color Synopsis. Inside, physicians are directed to: "outline all risks" & "the doctor also needs to sign the consent and include notes about any unique aspects of the case." I signed Discover's standard consent form - listing possible outcomes, up to & including death. There is no mention of my high-risk status nor any of the unique aspects on my consent. John Doane took away my right of informed choice. He later gave me his personal cell number & agreed to discuss a refund...as long as I signed documentation stating Discover was no longer responsible for my treatment - John blamed this on his insurance company. In summary: I'd been partially blinded (at absolutely no charge) & Discover could shrug their shoulders & walk away. No thank you - I passed on John F Doane's refund. I will tell my story & report these clowns to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. P.S. Discover billed my personal insurance company for their emergency surgery. read more

My family, all three daughters, my husband, my sister and my mother have seen many doctors there for Lasik (4 of us), Cataracts, eye infection, scar removal and grafting, and normal eye exams. We have had great experiences with the outcomes that included serious surgeries and less serious issues, however, the staff answering the phone, in particular Ashley can be rude and not very understanding. I truly hope the doctors there get word of this, and can do a little more training on patience and understanding when dealing with patients, and their more urgent needs. She goes to abrupt and rude almost from first answering the phone and needs a little more guidance. You can be informative without being so abrasive. No need to set a bad example with the patients. read more

I had lasik with Dr. Doane over 10 years ago. My vision went from 20/200 and 20/60 to 20/15 in both eyes. Fantastic experience and I recommended the treatment and Dr. Doane highly. Had some trouble with the appointments and length of wait time, Dr. Doane himself called to apologize and ask that I give them another opportunity. I had Lasik surgery in both eyes at Discover Vision in June of 2012 with Dr Doane. As someone who has a severe astigmatism on both eyes and couldn't find contacts that I could stand in my eyes, I was very worried that this wouldn't be a "cure all" for me specifically. Today I am proud to report I no longer suffer from astigmatism but I can see BETTER than 20/20 in both eyes and they are still improving! I no longer need glasses or contacts and I do not suffer from any residual side effects including dry eye. I went to a lot of places in and around KC looking for the right Dr. for me. I liked Dr. Doane and his team tremendously. Dr. Parsons in the Independence office was there for my pre-op visit and did a number of tests to ensure I was a good candidate. Probably more importantly to me, made sure I had realistic expectations and had done my homework. I asked (and he answered) a lot of questions. I felt very, very comfortable moving forward after working with him and his staff and never felt rushed or pressured into making a choice or committing to anything until I was ready. When I was ready, the financing portion of their process was easy and uneventful. They will find a way to make it work for you if they can. The surgery center was so efficient that I couldn't believe how quickly I was finished! The pre and post-op staff at the Leawood office were so great and friendly, they made me feel very comfortable and so well taken care of. I also paid attention to everything they said to do, and I follow it to the letter. The surgery itself is painless. I didn't feel anything. It was the part I was the most worried about but it didn't hurt at all. Best advice I recieved: Go home and go to bed after. I ate something quick and took Advil PM after my surgery (in the car on my way home). By the time I woke up (6 hours later) I felt almost 100% better. USE YOUR DROPS!!! it will make all the difference. Your eyes will be uncomfortably "scratchy" and watery when you leave the surgery center...it will be almost 100% gone by the time you wake up. It's odd but true. If you are thinking about this surgery, go to Discover and at least do their free evaluation. I went to them because so many of my friends and co-workers went there and had great expirences. I can't believe I waited so long. It was the most life-changing thing I have ever done for myself. You don't know what you can't see until after you have this surgery. It actually makes me a little sad that I am just now really seeing the details in things at 37...but hey, better late than never. Thank you Dr. Parsons, Dr. Doane and all the staff that made this such a great, life-changing expirence for me personally. It has literally changed how I live my life every single day. I've been coming to this location for 4 years now. My last visit was a nightmare. Visits before this one weren't the best but, after reading some of the reviews, my experience this last time seemed to be nothing new. Omg, the staffing! Maybe they changed their process too? I feel like the technician did all of the exams while, the doctor flashed the light into my eyes a few times and sent me on my way. Speaking of doctors, I saw someone new this time. He was extremely fidgety, which made me a little uncomfortable. Maybe he had too many shots of expresso. I think the worst part of my visit was the receptionists. Ugh, just rude. She complained about how tired she was. Very combative with me when I pointed out some errors she made with my information. I can't explain how unprofessional she was! The other lady was just lazy and rude while she discussed another patients information to the lady that was helping me while I was standing there. Very inappropriate! I had lasik here a year ago. I've never been more happy with a decision. The ability to see better now than when I had contacts or glasses is great, without the hassle of putting in contacts. I have purchased multiple pairs of glasses over the years with positive experiences from the opticians They have always been polite, and helpful. The new optician, Alisha, is consistently rude. She is short with me, treats me like I am a criminal because I want my glasses adjusted a second time, and acts like I am putting her out by even being there. I went to the Blue Springs office for 10 months trying to find out why my eyes hurt. I used countless number of eye drops with no success for inflammation. I kept asking if I could take a pill to help, I was told that no pill would help. The eye doctor did blood test that said I had lupus. I went to 2 different doctors that said I did not have lupus. Finally the doctor tried a steroid pill and that had the best success but not fully relieved my eyes from hurting. So they finally sent me to the Discover Vision in Leawood KS which took over a month to get into. They put in tubes in my tear ducts. This helped for 2 months now my eyes are hurting again. I went to the doctor and they are putting me on a low dose antibiotic. I don't think they know what is wrong with my eyes. They also have my insurance messed up. When they submitted the claim to insurance for putting the tubes in my eyes, they used the diagnoses of dry eyes and lupus, nothing about putting tubes in so the insurance did not pay anything. I asked about this and now they want to resubmit the claim to insurance. I don't think they know what they are doing between fixing my eyes and billing, everything is not right. read more

I am in love with Dr. Randy Jackson and Discover Vision Center! I once was blind...but NOW I see...20/15 to be exact! Money is not everything, but you can sure make a case that your vision is right smack dab at the top of the list. I have been happy with every employee, and every step of the process. From blind as a bat to seeing the time on my alarm clock in the middle of the night. Dr. Jackson is Board certified and has a fabulous bedside manner. I was treated with the utmost respect and compassion. This surgery has changed my life. Just think, 20 minutes and you too could be seeing 20/15. Worth every penny! First and foremost, what's most important: the doctors. They are great. They are knowledgeable and I have full confidence in them. I had LASIK at Discover in Leawood in January 2010. I had a quick recovery and the whole experience was very good; you can tell have the process down. Unfortunately, my vision changed again and I had to have "enhancements" done five years later. Really, the only complaint I have about Discover is their lack of timeliness in keeping their appointments. I've read similar complaints. It appears to be quite a chronic problem. Following your procedure, you need to go back multiple times for follow-ups. I would advise anyone who has a day job to schedule your appointment as late as possible (4:15 p.m.) because you will NOT be seen on time. I had my final follow-up appointment last night at 4:15 and was not seen by the doctor until 5:20 p.m.! This is completely unacceptable. On my first follow-up, I had an appointment for 10:30 a.m. and had to leave and reschedule because I was waiting for 30 minutes without any indication in sight that I was going to be seen. The confusing thing is that it's not an issue of a large number of patients in the waiting room; it's not a lack of staffing. Last night, there was only one other patient in the waiting room ahead of me, and yet I did not get to see the doctor until an hour after my scheduled appointment, without any explanation. The front desk employees and back-office staff were chatting. The office was a ghost town...so why was I seen an hour late? Great doctors, great experience. Please just get it together with keeping appointments. Quality doctors are important, but so is your customers' time. read more

I had LASIK at the Leawood office, performed by Dr. Doane, earlier this month. The procedure itself takes about 15 minutes. The worst part is the device they use to hold your eyeball open. Otherwise, the process is painless. Afterward, you wear protective eye guards for the rest of the day when you go home and sleep. My eyes burned a bit more than I thought they would, but once I was finally able to fall asleep I was good until the next day. When I went in for my reevaluation the next day I definitely had photophobia but I had sunglasses so it was fine. The next day the vision each eye was 20/25 and 20/20 using both. My right eye was a bit more irritated than the left and took a few more days to heal but when I went back in for my 2 week recheck I am seeing 20/20 for the first time in my life. Before the procedure I was -8.75 and -9.25 and now I can see as well as I did wearing my contacts, only now when I wake up I don't have contact lenses stuck to my eyeballs. The Leawood office is where all of our Discover Vision appointments took place. We loved everyone from receptionist to optometrists to surgeon. We have always had great experiences......until they over charged us. I couldn't be with my husband and he was overcharged, not understanding our insurance. When we called our insurance they confirmed it and told us the four figure amount....all in one call. Here we are months later, still waiting for a refund. They finally acknowledged after 3 months that they owed us and yet weeks later they still can't figure out how much...supposedly. I don't know if it's a billing program issue or a people problem but it's very frustrating. The insurance company figured it out with one phone call. I don't have problems with people making mistakes, but not correcting things is where they lose me. I guess we will move on to the Attorney Generals office of consumer complaints. read more

DO NOT DO SMILE LASIK!!! I do not recommend SMILE or Discover Vision. My eyes are ruined! I know many have had a great experience with lasik but there are also many who have had a lot of bad side effects from Lasik and SMILE. Do your research! Problems can and do happen and happen a lot more often than Lasik dr's claim. From my experience, refractive surgeons are also salesman and they are going to tell you what you want to hear. I have had a terrible experience with relex SMILE. My vision is ruined now and my issues cannot be corrected. My vision was considerably better with contacts and I completely regret ever having refractive surgery! Visual recovery is much longer with SMILE- not quicker as they claim. I have had many issues since my smile surgery but my biggest issues are: over-correction, a remaining astigmatism, blurry vision, and very bad ghosting day and night. Glasses do not fix the issue and you can't wear soft contacts after refractive surgery. read more

I would not recommend this group. The technicians do most of the work - the doctor spends approximately 5-7 minutes with you and then sends you on your way. My first year exam the doctor said - just stay with same contacts. They are quite expensive so I was hoping for some discussion about different option. That would have extended the appointment beyond 5 mintues! I also ordered glasses and had to make 4 trips to get proper fitting -with each tech badmouthing the one before for not doing their job correctly. This year the doc (different) gave me multiple contact options (strength and type - Kudos to him for at least listening to me!) and told me with work with their "expert" contact tech in determining what works best. Of course that would entail her actually communicating with me. I had to call at least 2 times - often 3 to get her to respond - and each time I did it appeared that she hates her job. I tried again this week Tue & Wed mid morning and on Thursday finally called office manager who says they did try to call me back. Funny those calls don't show up on my phone. The office manager is as rude as the rest of the group - but I supposed she deals with these type calls all day so may be cranky. I finally told them to give me a paper prescription of my OLD prescription (before this nightmare started) so that I can take it to someone who will provide service. Of course - they can't email or fax. I have to make another trip! I've wasted time and insurance on this - and am in the exact same prescription I was a year ago. I was really impressed with my visit, Dr Johnson was great, as was her staff. I got my glasses there as well, and that was easy, and I was well attended to. I took away a star because of the difficulty in contacting them by phone. I had to try multiple times to make appointments for myself and my husband. I waited on hold, even left a message, and did not get a call back. That won't stop me from going there, the visit was great. read more

I encountered a doctor that really frustrated me. We all automatically give doctors a certain amount of leniency for being late. But Dr Dawson who works at Discover O on 40Hwy at the Cliffs took it to the extreme. He was 1hr and 20 min late. He was not sorry when I told him he was late. Instead he was rude and said would you like another appointment or let me see you now. I said let us pick on you for being late he said no I don't do that. He had no patients and no sympathy for being over an hour late. The other problem was I had another appointment to get to at 3pm because my husband can't drive right now to take our daughter to her appointment and we still don't have another car yet since his accident. So here I am running all week to take care of everyone to have a doctor treat me like I have nothing better to do then wait on him to show up. No consideration that I may have another appointment to get to after him. This was uncalled for and very rude. To make matters worse I asked the front desk if hes running late and they said we don't know. No going to find out so I don't waste my time nope just sit and wait. They don't pay me for my time to sit and wait but they sure want there money and don't care how they treat there patients and the lack of communication in that office was ridiculous. The professionalism in that office is terrible and they are very confusing. I'm sick of the God complex that doctors have they are providing a service not paying me to be there. So start treating people when some compassion and let them know if your running late so they can maybe reschedule if they need to instead expecting them to wait all day and make them miss another appointment because of your inconsiderateness of other peoples time. Because our time is just as valuable as yours unless you want to start paying me to sit there. read more

This office typically runs 2 hours behind! If u make an appointment here plan on camping out! Bring snacks, a change of clothes, maybe even a pillow for a nap! I have been here several times with my dad for his eye surgeries and each time they have not failed in running late! Completely disrespectful to leave a room full of elderly people sitting in a waiting room for hours! The poor nursing staff has to be the ones to take the brunt of everyone's frustrations! There are more places in town that do cataract surgery so shop around! I thing I got bed sores I sat in this lobby so long! read more

I recently visited Discover Vision Center @ Leawood for an eye related aliment. I was told the procedure would cost about $400 out of pocket and the rest will be covered by my insurance. I paid the out of pocket and went thru with the procedure. Couple of weeks later I get a bill for $1100 in addition to the $400 I paid upfront in my mail. When I tried to find the reason, I was told that the I was given incorrect information and my insurance will not pay. They basically said that it was thier mistake. Now, I understand that mistakes happen, but in this case the mistake would cost me $1100 out of pocket for a procedure, in the words of my eye doctor was not something I needed to go thru right away. I am not saying I would have put off the procedure forever, but given the right information, I could have planned to save the money for the procedure. All Discover vision center says in response is "We are sorry. We cannot do anything". That is not how you treat your customers. On top of that they keep sending letters in my mail saying that I have not made payments and it would be handed over to a collection agency. How can I make payments when I am disputing it? I was extremely myopic and had worn glasses since I was in first grade. As I got older, I also developed an astigmatism. After hearing that people with my poor eye sight were now candidates for Lasik, I asked several friends who had done it for recommendations and they all pointed me to Discover. Dr. Doane did my surgery in January 2010. I did need to have my left eye tweaked the following April to improve my distance in that eye and the results were amazing. I've had no issues since then and only throw on a pair of cheap readers in the morning when I read the paper. The rest of the day, I am glasses free. Most importantly, when I wake up in the morning I can instantly see! No groping for my glasses or squinting to see the big numbered alarm clock. Amazing! read more

After spending a couple thousand on Lasik, my eyes are now back to where they were before the surgery less than 3 years later. I have tried to contact Discover Vision about this and they can't even be bothered to respond to me. I would suggest you go somewhere with a better warranty if you want to have Lasik done. read more

I've been having my eyes checked yearly since I was 4 years old (now 40). This was my first time with Discover O because they were convenient, took my insurance and looked profession. My complete exam was done by a tech who then told me a doctor would be in in a couple of minutes. 20 minutes later I was still waiting. I went to walk around and when I came back they told me another 10-15 because the doctor was busy. Clearly, they were too busy for my business as I left and will not return.
