We have called on Discount Plumbing multiple times because of how reliable and transparent they are about the diagnosing problems and offering solutions. As usual this time they kept us updated on arrival and were exactly on time. We had detected a sewage smell coming from one of our bathrooms and Joseph thoroughly inspected our sink, toilet and shower to see if there was anything to fix. The simple solution Joseph proposed was to try running the water to see if the smell would go away before having them go on an invasive and costly plumbing expedition to determine the cause. I don't know if to recommend these guys or not. They are good in diagnosing things. Unlike other plumbers who come, look and give you estimate, they will actually work to diagnose the problems. Problem is that if they can find out that you qualify for the loans through their loan company, they seem to find a way to suddenly increase the work one way or another to hit the max. They the give an estimate at that point that is far from a discount, but they find a way to lower it enough to get you to say yes. They end up doing a good job with repairs and maybe it's just me and my two situations that they helped with, but be prepared that they might uncover a lot more and the cost for the follow on repairs will suddenly balloon and be a lot higher than other companies in the area. read more

They quoted us $4,250 to fix our clogged toilet. I was at an event but our niece was there when they came to give an estimate. Seeing how young and inexperienced she was, they tried to pull a scare tactic when they lifted the toilet and saw some micro roots at the top of the drain. They claimed that the roots cracked the pipe and they must excavate the soil up to 3 feet deep to access and repair the pipe. Additional fees would be charged if they couldn't get a clean pipe cut. They also said that they would not be responsible for putting back the tiles that were removed to repair. Luckily, my niece contacted me and I was able to assess the problem from the photos that she sent. There were micro-roots but they were too small to crack the pipe. In fact, with all houses (especially old ones), you will find roots near any areas with moisture. Once in a while, these roots can crack old pipes and clog them up. But in our case, I could tell that the micro-roots came up from the outside of the pipe and started to cover the rim of the drain. All you have to do is pull, clear, and clean them out. I asked the plumber why he didn't do that but he insisted that the roots cracked the pipe and he must excavate the bathroom to fix it. By this time, I knew that we were being scammed, and I told him to just put it back so I could get another plumber who was honest and willing to do the right thing. He said fine but we owed them $500 for his work. I brought up their free estimate advertisement but he insisted the charge was for unscrewing two screws, lifting the toilet, using the snake to look down and assess the problem, and putting the toilet back. I couldn't believe what I was hearing but since my niece didn't know and thought it was part of the free estimate. I asked him how much less if he didn't put back the toilet. He called his boss and came back with $400 total for basically a quick 30-minute estimate/evaluation. After the plumber left, I contacted my brother-in-law. He came over to help out. We easily cleared, cleaned, and put back the toilet in less than 40 minutes. There were no cracks. My intuition and assessment were correct and saved us at least $4000 of our hard-earned money. It ended up costing an additional $14.83 for a new wax ring and a tube of caulking. A big lesson learn is that most businesses that use Discount as part of their names will usually charge you a lot more than whatever they are discounting. Don't throw your hard-earned money in the toilet. We are never going to use Discount Plumbing SD again! read more
