No more than one month ago, I saw this new burger spot just a bun's throw from my house, and this sunday morning was just a perfect time for trying it! The location is really "Shoreditchean": the classical fancy underground place, falsely cheap, just a room with on-sight kitchen, and a counter on all sides with stools, that's it. And it really seems perfect for the zombie movie scenario described above. Now, when you get in what do you want? hopefully a burger. Which burger? Don't care, no choice. Cheeseburger, bacon burger or veggie thingy (hate veggie option in a burger place. eat burger or go somewhere else, damn it). Chips or onion rings, and a milkshake. stop. Now, I love small menus, but damn this is short! really short! It's better to be seriously good or damn we have some issues here! So how was it? Good, pretty good. We have a greasy, saucy burger with cheese and vegetables, but the best part is the bacon. My god, that's some serious thick burger, basically it's like having a pork belly steak over a burger, and it's damn delicious! My only issue is with the bread, as the burger is a bit too saucy for the soft bun, a bit like patty&bun but the result is a bit more soggy, maybe because the whole thing is cooked for more time under cover. Bad rate for the fries, too old. That's a mistake from the cook, not from the recipe, maybe things are better with other people. And I really want to try the rings next time. In the end, it's a good solid spot, I'd never go for the cheeseburger but rather have the bacon one, and I still have to test the fries. Thoroughly crispy and fluffy on the inside. The service was a bit brutal though. A smile could have helped along with not looking at us like we were the idiots when they got the order wrong. Charmless I would say. It's small inside. Cobblestone floor, steel stools to perch on, not the place for lounging, but a good 'dirty' vibe to it none the less. A burger should be medium-rare and this is more medium to medium-well. The onion fries are heavenly, like onion rings, just not in rings. I went for their recent addition "The Dirty Bird" which is a chicken burger with a tomato slice on top, salad and sauce. It tasted great, although some of the sauce did drip out the burger when eating it. You can watch your burgers being cooked and the smell does come your way while you're waiting so it makes you even hungrier. Their prices start from £5/6 for burgers and sides are £4. Drinks both soft and hard are available. They even do a £6 combo (burger and side) from Mon-Fri 12pm to 6pm. Early last year I discovered the Vauxhall branch and instantly became a convert to the Church of Dirty Burger, crowning it my favourite burger experience ever. Today I found myself within an acceptable distance of this branch to warrant a detour and sample their wares. There are three items on the menu. Dirty Burger, Dirty Bacon or Dirty Cop Out (vegetarian). You should note the vegetarian option is cooked on the same hot plate as the beef and bacon, so any remotely serious vegetarian will turn their nose up at it. Anyway, we ordered our food and waited. It wasn't mega busy but the burgers did seem to take a while to come. At least this meant we had managed to get some seats by the time the food was ready. There are maybe 10 chairs in the whole place. The two things I love about Dirty Burger are the burgers and the onion fries. The burger here was good but not quite as good as the ones I've had at the Vauxhall branch. Great flavour but not rare enough here. It was pink in the middle, but not as pink as I wanted it. The onion fries were great. Chunks of red onion deep fried in a light tempura batter that's mixed with cider, then lavished with sea salt crystals and pepper. They are to die for, which is handy because eat too many and they'll probably kill you. It was still a great Dirty Burger, but not enough to steal the crown from Vauxhall. It was ready in a few minutes and I took the bag with me and walked briskly to the Shoreditch overground station. I had a four-minute window until the next south-bound train. I made the call to eat the burger. Four minutes takes longer than you think it should. I comfortably ate the burger and did a good job of not spilling the juices. It was still as hot as it would have been had I decided to eat in. All the parts were great, just like the first dirty burger I had at the Vauxhall restaurant. Been here a few times in passing, and though the staff have been perfect I can't help but feel there is something missing from this place. It's certainly doesn't have the charm of the original in Kentish Town. This layout and feel is much different bar the exterior. Whilst the other has more cosy warmth to it this feels odd. Easily one of the best places I've been too for junky food on a satisfying level, not as comparable to the likes of patty and bun but it still has its charm. It's darker and almost gothic. The toilets are nice but I swear it was a bit of a nightmare navigating the place as was dealing with idiots who can't wait in line to get a seat. Service was great though. Enjoyed the people and they were really nice to us. The specials were just right. Not too much and not too little so you felt hungry. Really unimpressed with the food. I got the bacon burger. It was dirty (i.e. Messy) for sure but I didn't get any enjoyment out of it. The bun and lettuce was ok. But the meat. First the bacon wasn't bacon at all. It looked like streaky bacon but it was a thick slab of ham. It just didn't belong on a burger and it didn't provide that crispy savory bonus like it should. I took it off after two bites. Also the patty was very rare and raw. I like a good rare burger but this one was just off putting. I would imagine it would be almost impossible to get a seat later in the evening, but don't taske my word for that. We went at 6 and got two stools at the front, which was fine, but beware for later. We watched the grill man do his thing. First thing I learned was that the burgers are all cooked to order-from raw. No pre-cooking here. Each is allowed to cook under its own dome shaped lid, just as I've seen on US Food Network shows. The menu is small-just a couple or so of burgers, fries and onion rings. I had the cheeseburger. It was done to perfection-the meat was tender, juicy and with a real taste, as if it was well matured. Not the biggest burger I've had but this was more than made up for in taste. Kudos to the guy working the grill because the manager was as moody as they come, wouldn't look you in the eye and generally seemed content to be chatting with his mates rather than offering anything deemed as good service. Yesterday a friend and I went to dirty burger for dinner. It's fairly small and very popular, when we arrive at 6.15 there were not many seats available, so we sat at the counter. The decor was standard burger bar. The staff were pretty attentive throughout and they were rushed off their feet, so props to them. The waitress warned us that it's possible that we may get splashed with chicken juice, as we were sitting opposite where the chefs chop up chicken. My friend recommended a vodka, elderflower and cranberry, sweet but refreshing. We ordered a cheese burger & a burger with avocado. The burgers are not massive in size, and had we been really hungry we would have ordered more. As soon as I saw the burger I knew that this was a knife and fork situation. I had visions of wearing most of my dinner, like other people have commented, it's messy. The burger was nice, definitely not the best I've had, but better than a lot. For pudding we contemplated Apple pie with ice cream, because it looked divine.. But we were, unbelievably, pretty full. If you are lucky enough find a space, there is parking right outside. It was free when we parked, I'm not sure if it is free to park all of the time. I would return to dirty burger. I would recommend it for a quick bite to eat with friends. Oh and.. Cheeseburger gets 3, nothing special about it, and the Cop-Out gets 1 star. Regarding the veggie burger: First, I'm not a big fan of Portobello caps, and it was a stack of 2 portobellos. It's not called dirty for no reason: the burger is a delightful mess! A well seasoned patty crammed into a Brioche bun with the classic must-have trio of gherkins, tomato and lettuce, oozing sauce and melted cheese. The onion fries are particularly good and make a nice change from onion rings - not to mention easier to eat! When served the other waitress on shift was quite rude and she confused the orders so we had to wait long for one if us being served.
