Direct TV streaming is horrible quality. The picture and the sound are well over a minute off often. The sound cuts out. The picture cuts out. It is really bad. I was with direct tv for years, I had to cancel my service with the intent to get service again in the future. When I called everything was fine they said they were going to cancel it and I would be charged one day because of the day I canceled it. I completely understood that. The next month I got charged for the whole bill. I called back and they kept putting me on hold. They were telling me I have to pay for the whole month. I got transferred and kept getting put on hold again. They ended up refunding me part of the money but did not keep their promise of only charging one day when I originally called. Terrible customer service. 4 years ago, beginning with installation, the work order was incorrect, installer made it worse, Direct TV never corrected the issue. We proceeded because we didn't have time for the aggravation (don't really have the time now), and I liked the NFL Red-Zone. I just had the most disappointing experience with Directv. I ordered services on February 10, 2014 and spoke with Jenay. I told her that I wanted a package that included AMC & DisneyHD as that is what my family finds most important. She offered me the Entertainment package, as it had what we wanted and "more". I was told I get three free months of hobo/showtime or what ever as part of the deal and that when bundled with Internet, my total costs before taxes would be $75.99. We were very excited and looked forward to this install date of February 16, 2014 between 12 pm & 4 pm. We moved, had been stuck inside due to a winter snow storm and had no phone, internet or cable tv for two weeks. This was traumatic. We were cut off from almost everything and at the time were just happy to have had electricity during that time. This was supposed to be like a reward for the suffering. Today the tech comes out to do the install and everything seems alright. He arrived fifteen minutes to one o'clock and worked steadily, was polite and informative. While going over how to program your system to record a series. I suggested we use walking dead as that's what we'd be doing any way. We turn to channel 254 and get an error message to upgrade the plan. What? He pulls out the programming guide, Tricks & Tips brochure and something he was holding to double check that it's part of my package. It all checks out on each branded item. He tells me that I'm going to have to call customer service to let them know something is wrong. I tell him I will after I return my moving truck. We get back and make the call. The rep says that AMC was removed from the Entertainment line up on February 6, 2014. I advise that my service was ordered February 10, 2014 and that all of the branded Directv paper that I have reads that this is part of the package I signed an agreement for. The rep states that she can do nothing and gets me to her supervisor, Jenny. Jenny proceeds to tell me the same thing and that she is sorry for the "confusion and misinformation" however, she cannot keep the plan I signed up for. I have branded materials telling me what I paid for, an agreement that lists what I paid for but am not able to have AMC added to that package without paying an additional $9/month. I would have to pay an almost extra $120 per year to get what an agreement said I was entitled to. I was offered a two month "credit" ($18) for the inconvenience. Eighteen dollars for a break in a service agreement. If it weren't for my family, I would have had them come and retrieve this immediately. I'm tired of big companies raking American consumers over the coals. They don't even hire locally for support. The majority outsource work that could help boost OUR economy. We are locked in contracts that they can change and modify as they see fit at our loss. I'm so tired of fighting this. If I were single, I'd not deal with Directv or Concast. Directv is barely the lesser of two evils. My small money won't matter or make a difference either way but I wish we could unite and make these companies accountable for their actions. We have bought a HBO and Showtime package that was faulty and never worked. Can't access but maybe one or two of their programming titles and the demand option was null. I have spent hours on the phone with several customer agents as it took about 5 agents to get me to the right dept. to be able to access my account. So frustrating! I literally spend 4 hours trying to fix. The customer service gal said this is an ongoing problem with the HBO/ Showtime service and it hadn't been resolved in the last 3 months since I made my first tech service call. BEWARE!!! Direct TV is Terrible!!! We recently made a change to Direct TV because we have always liked ATT. We were loyal ATT customers for over 25 years. Well, Direct TV is dragging ATT into the pits! Shortly after installation, we were unhappy with the product offered by Direct TV. When we finally got through to them on the phone to cancel the service (with in 25 days) they charged us $500. They only give you 2 weeks to change your mind. They know they have an inferior product so they do not give you any time. For example, most companies (ie: Xfinity) will give you 30 days to change your mind, because they are confident they have a good product. The product is terrible, line up cumbersome, remote slow and the customer service is the worst I have ever seen! Customer service will keep you on hold of hours and then hang up on you if they have an opportunity. On my third call, the sales assistant yelled at me when I asked to speak to a supervisor. Unfortunately, Costco teamed up with Direct TV and have a sales person in their warehouses. This is surprising as I trust Costco, but will rethink the services offered going forward. Used Direct TV service for a couple years without any major problems, until we moved. Called to move the account to a new address, and found out that they didn't provide cable service at the new location. So we discontinued our service. They continued to "auto-bill" us for several months until we noticed that these charges kept continuing. Had to have discussions with multiple representatives over the course of several months to finally get them to stop. Fortunately we were able to get some, but not all, of our money back. DirecTV: 21 Reasons to Avoid It I am currently leasing two high definition DVRs and here's what I have found: 1. Appointments are often either not kept, or when they are, are late. Phone calls are commonly not returned. Repeated attempts to resolve problems are futile. Some representatives are as pleasant as the Borg. 2. If DirecTV physically damages your audio video equipment on installation, they refuse all responsibility, refusing to pay for repair costs (after initially agreeing to do so and firing the installation tech). I'm out several hundred dollars in replacement costs for equipment the tech physically damaged. 3. Incomplete satellite dish installations, such as failing to replace air vent screens may occur; a ventilation screen 30' above the ground was left open allowing birds to nest inside my house. A second screen, for the crawl space, was left loose allowing Norway rats to nest under the house. Expect black handprints on your walls. 4. Promised credits never materialize on the bill. 5. None of the equipment is guaranteed beyond 90 days; your choice is to either pay for an ongoing monthly service plan or the full cost of the repairs/replacements/dish realignments. (See, also, items 20 and 21.) 6. Periodically, the receiver must be reinitialized using the reset button; this can take 10 to 20 minutes, so if you are intending to watch a program, you're out of luck. (Update: This is been less of an problem lately.) 7. Unless you hold the remote number keys down just the right amount of time, either the number will not register or it will be repeated (e.g., pressing channel 2 may result in channel 22). Responses to commands can be very slow. Unlike other remotes, this one is not at all forgiving if you do not point it directly at the receiver and TV. (Although one is located directly above the other, they may or may not turn on/off simultaneously.) On the plus side, the rubberized back keeps the remote from slipping around. 8. One of the remotes ceased functioning after just nine months. I've never had any other brand of remote fail. 9. The audio and video are not always in sync; sometimes resetting the unit helps, sometimes not. 10. Changing channels is not instantaneous, in fact, not even close, taking 4-11 seconds. 11. Sometimes when the DVR requires resetting, previously recorded programs are not available. 12. Although you "purchase" the DVRs at $200 each when initiating service, you don't really own them and must return them to DirecTV or be charged once again for them. In fact, if you don't, you'll be charged $400. 13. Attempting to record only the new episodes of a series does not work if the same episode appears later in the day. The DVR will record multiple copies of the same show, unnecessarily using disk space. 14. At times, there is no reception when it is snowing; perhaps this is a problem with Dish TV, as well. 15. Unrequested pay-per-view program/movies may appear on your list of recordings. DirecTV says these are "suggestions" despite the fact I've never used their pay-per-view service and certainly wouldn't choose something such as "Monsters versus Aliens." Be careful you don't inadvertently click the wrong button or you'll be charged for it. DirecTV says there is no way to keep these "suggestions" from appearing on your list of recordings. (Update: This hasn't been a problem of late.) 16. They nickel and dime you to death with extra charges (e.g., more than one receiver, HD reception, equipment maintenance). The ultimate charge is far more than the advertised cost. 17. They bill for premium channels not ordered and then state since the channels were available reversal of the charges is not possible. 18. Only one channel is available from local stations that broadcast multiple channels. For example, OPB broadcasts one hi-def channel and three standard definition channels, but only the former is available. 19. Be certain to see the technician out when he/she leaves. In one instance, he left leaving the front door wide open. 20. Two hi-def DVR units failed after the 90 day warranty period. 21. Don't expect that paying the additional cost of a service plan will ensure prompt service. The last nonfunctioning DVR required a one-week wait for a replacement. *** DirecTV is quite possibly the worst cable/satellite provider on the planet. In summary, if you don't mind shoddy & poorly designed equipment, missed appointments, & unethical behavior, the picture is great. But, given the overall inferior quality of its equipment & practices, DreckTV might be a more accurate appellation for the company. read more

I've got good and bad to say and can tell you many stories of my 8 years as a Directv customer (which I ended last month.) Here are the things that stand out the most though: (-) that time when we moved across the street, and the installer put the dish on our roof, facing north. He then realized from the lack of reception that it wasn't facing the right way (south), so he moved it to another spot *but still left a bracket mounted in the 1st place*, ugly as can be. He said his compass was broken, hence the confusion. Ha ha ha. (-) how our reception would crackle and drop when it was cloudy, more and more as the years went on. At least it's rarely cloudy and rainy in Portland Oregon, right? Ha ha ha again. (-) you own the dish itself so anything at all that goes wrong with it means you're paying $50 a pop for a service call. Unless you get the protection plan, which I think was $8/month? So, multiply that out. If you think you'll need service calls more than twice a year, I guess get the protection plan. If you think you'll need service calls more than twice a year though, why are you still with this company? Ha ha, joke's on you. (-) Customer service varies greatly. I've dealt with the nicest, most patient and accommodating folks and I've dealt with people who were downright nasty from the word go. Most things will boil down to: you need a service call. See the point above. Still laughing? (+) finally, my last interaction with Directv was a good one. After scanning our receiver cards when I canceled service, they decided we ordered 9 pay per view movies in 2007 (!) that they never billed us for "because our phone line wasn't hooked up so they didn't know we ordered them." Guess what, we never were able to watch a PPV movie because if you order by remote, they deliver by phone line....which as we just discussed, was never hooked up. 1st person I dealt with was awful, rude, and did not understand that circular logic. 2nd person was kind, polite, easy to work with, understood the lunacy of the situation, and promptly credited our account + sent us an email confirmation of the credit. Finally something I did smile about. That 2nd star? That's for you, Joan in the Billing Department. Look, we stayed with them 8 years. Partially because we were lazy, partially due to horror stories about other providers. Being a newly college graduate, I was nervous about the cost of cable and internet. After hours of research, I stumbled upon direct tv and decided to give them a call. They were able to offer me 130 channels and internet all for $35.99, which was exciting. Unfortunately, they couldn't make it out for a week and a half for installation. Well today they showed up. Within 20 seconds of entering my home, I was told that I was not a candidate for the satellite because of the way my apartment faces. I also learned that I had never been contacted about Internet installation. I was so frustrated because it would have taken 30 seconds for the salesperson to ask me where my apartment faced and thus that I was not a candidate. Unfortunately, I waited a week and a half to learn to this information. This company is probably okay for many customers, but I was appalled with my experience today. I have had directv for over 20 years. Recently I get a call from customer service who doesn't speak english very well at all. Two days later I get an email confirmation of a two year commitment for a premium tv package. I absolutely gave no consent for that. I called to get it straightened out and they refuse to return my account to the way it was before this bogus fraudulent phone call. I made complaints with the DOJ, PUC, and FTC and they still refuse to return my account to the TV package I had before. In my opinion that is blatant fraud and theft. After years being with Directtv I'm finally going to cancel and have DISH installed. Directtv has gotten GREEDY and their employees are insulting and rude! I like the whole line up and the employees tell me to cancel out my movie channels if I want my bill to get lower? I hope they lose their jobs for being so stupid with dealing with senior citizens. Fact of the matter is I have had 4 service calls in a month's time period the 1st 3 times the service men said they got up and fixed my satellite and/or checked my satellite dish on the roof which was completely false they never got up and checked my dish. The last technician I had out here 2 days ago actually got up checked the dish and found out that the transponder was defective. I called in today to let them know my services were still not working properly that I could not use any of my on demand services and that my screen was still freezing for 15 to 20 seconds 2 or 3 times an hour. When I called in today I was connected with and Angelica employee ID376U which in my opinion was very argumentative and trying to pass the buck off to my Internet company telling me that my Internet wasn't fast enough. I have more than enough Internet through xfinity to watch on demand. I believe that for the price I pay of 200 or more a month for their services I should not have these problems. In my opinion directv does not seem to care about the consumers it's all about getting their next monthly payment. I have not been offered any compensation for all the problems that I've been having I had to ask for them to consider compensating me for all of these issues. On another note I also complained about their timeframe for their technicians of between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at night right in the middle of dinner time and family time that is unacceptable to have a technician roaming around my house at that time and they refused to give me any other reasonable time to get a technician out here. Upon telling them this they say the card expired already and could not be reissued! I was reluctant to go with them at first because I do not prefer satellite tv. But I went with it specifically with the $300.00 offer. I could have gotten the same deal from COSTCO and they would have given me their concierge service free! I canceled my direct tv service to switch to a different provider. Shortly after, direct tv contacted me multiple times to get me to join them again. I finally gave in after I was offered a low monthly payment and 2 seasons of the NFL package halfway into the 2016 season. This year, they charged me for the 2017 season. When I called to get it corrected, all they would do is remove the NFL package, claiming that my offer wasn't special and they aren't offering 2 seasons. Now I'm locked in a contract for another year, the bill has gone up twice, don't have the package they offered, and they call me constantly trying to get me to add channels. On Sunday, September 30, 2018, I signed up for a 7 day free trial. When I attempted to cancel on Saturday, October 6, 2018, the dtv nfl sunday ticket site did not allow me to enter. It said my account was locked and I needed to call ATT. I called ATT and was directed to call DTV. DTV then told me to call ATT. Upon calling them again, they said they had no direct relationship with DTV NFL Sunday Ticket and gave me several different #'s to call. Which I did and was redirected back to ATT. When I did get in contact with DTV and gave them the account # that was issued by email, they said I didn't have an account and the only way I could cancel was to log into my account. I told them it was locked and everytime I call the 800# I get ATT, which can't unlock an account they are not responsible for. I was told to dispute with my credit card company. My CC company told me to call the # listed, 855-229-8114, this # is out of service. When I told ATT to call, they transferred me some internal department but wouldn't give me the direct #, this dept was NFL Sunday Ticket. This rep told me that I should have cancelled during the trial, I explained my situation, he told to reset my password, I told him I've tried over 5x's, get redirected to ATT then DTV, then told I have no account. Further explained that I'd need to dispute with my CC company if I wanted a refund but there was nothing he could do. So- Direct Tv and AT&T are merging and they are in the process of combing websites. Long story short- or as short as can be- watch your accounts! The rocket scientists between both companies combined our Direct TV account with someone else's AT&T account and those AT&T customers decided to buy allllll brand new cell phones- and they were paid for with our banking information on our Direct TV account. When we discovered this- no one we called between either company could tell us what happened or could they connect us to anyone who knew how to fix it. We were told their IT department would be contacting us on Sunday with our new log in- we couldn't log in because the AT&T people changed our password. Fast forward to Tuesday- no phone call, accounts are still connected and 2 1/2 hours and 7 people later we were finally able to get the accounts separated and talk to someone at Direct to cancel. Said person then offered us all sorts of new plans- not understanding that we don't care if the bill is high- we care that they allowed our $1500.00 to be taken from our account and then couldn't figure out how to fix it. Don't waste your money, people. Hulu, Netflix, Philo- hell- get an antenna and put some tin foil on it for a clear picture. Any of those options are more intelligent than Direct TV and AT&T.
