I wish I could give them zero stars...why is that not an option, Yelp? I 100% agree with previous postings regarding how terrible Direct TV is. I would get more enjoyment flushing my money down the toilet every month. One thing I have not seen mentioned in other reviews is their 4 HOUR service windows. They cannot give more specific times, even the day of. So here I sit, wasting the middle of my day because something is wrong with THEIR equipment. Since when is their time more valuable than mine? Let me share my Direct TV experience. On Friday, November 8th I logged onto the Direct TV Website. Generally, our bill is roughly $130 per month, give or take a dollar. The amount this time, however, was about 35 dollars higher than normal. Upon investigation, I discovered an old trick that Direct TV uses that I had forgotten about. Every year, if a subscriber has purchased a sports package for a particular season, Direct TV automatically renews that subscriber for the following season. I had forgotten the year before that I had purchased NBA League Pass. Therefore, Direct TV automatically renewed me for the 2013 season. Direct TV puts the onus on the subscriber to catch this automatic renewal and act on it. And, per Direct TV's rules that the subscriber must play by, if the season starts and the subscriber doesn't catch it, its too bad for the subscriber. This happened to me. I had not checked the online statement details. There was no charge for NBA League Pass on the bill dated 9/8/2013, but there was a note of an early renewal. The bill dated 10/8 (due 10/27) had the first payment due, and that is when I noticed the irregular amount, and did the research uncovering the renewal. By then, according to the associate I first spoke to and later, his supervisor, it was too late. Too bad for me I didn't notice that Direct TV had automatically signed me up for something I didn't ask for, and the window for me to stop them from renewing me without my consent had closed. Too bad, they essentially said, I was stuck with it. Whether I asked for it or not. Gotcha. Take your medicine, we won this round. THIS PRACTICE IS REPREHENSIBLE. I asked the supervisor to justify it morally, to stick someone with something they didn't ask for and then when they realize it, too bad, you get it and Direct TV is entitled to my money as a result. She couldn't other than to say it was "Direct TV Policy". This practice of auto renewing and hoping the subscriber doesn't notice is unethical. This is tantamount to delivering a pizza to my door and insisting that I buy it simply because the pizza maker made it. If I had asked for NBA League Pass, I'd have to accept that I have it for the whole season. I didn't ask for NBA League Pass, and now, since I didn't notice it on the emailed statement (we are enrolled in paperless billing), whether I want it or not, Direct TV says "gotcha". Why does Direct TV engage in this practice? How can you possible justify doing this? You can't. And you know it. You are doing it simply hoping people will be too busy to notice. Like I was. To keep out of trouble, I've paid the first installment that I was billed for. Auto Renewing a longstanding customer like my wife and I and then forcing us to pay for something we didn't ask for is an unethical business practice. There is no way to justify this. read more

Number 1 in customer service? Yeah right! Billing issues is a big problem. Also, they will ad services without your knowledge. They added a protection plan to my account without my consent. When I called to cancel the protection plan they tried to convince me to keep it. They told me that all my TVs and computers would be covered under the protection plan. I informed them that all my electronics had extended warranties on them and that I did not need their protection plan. When I signed up, I took advantage if a promotion they had going. Choice package for 29.99$ per month. Oddly enough Jessica from the technical department was telling me that my normal monthly will be 67.00$ per month plus tax and equipment fees...brining my grand total to 96.00$. When I reminded her of my promotional price, she told me my bill will still be 96.00$. Together we itemized my bill and the results were the same. 67.00$, but she still kept insisting that it was 96.00$ and started raising her voice to me. I asked to speak with a supervisor and ended up sitting on hold for a long time. I just hung up and called again the next day and straightened it all out. Sadly I think I will be breaking my contract and will be going back to xfinity. read more

I am 6 weeks short of a 1 year contract with Direct tv. I am moving to another state with no house yet. May need to stay at a motel for months. I cant use Direct TV. It is now a $300.00 penalty for cancellation. At the end of my talk with Direct TV (at&t) they had the nerve to say hope you come back with us. REALLY? after a $300.00 slap in the face. Very POOR customer service. From Christina to the "supervisor" Brittany they were unprofessional. I believe its the location in Elk Grove Village. No wonder why they, lock ppl into service with them with this contracting and card on file shit. Bc they will surely loose customers the way they service them. The wiring by an outside contractor was RIDICULOUSLY done carelessly. They could have that $150 for referrals..why help them?? Your just going to put that $150 towards your bill anyway!... My suggestion is to hire professional individuals that know how to communicate care about their customers. read more

My Comcast bill was just out of control so, with moving into a new house, thought we would try Direct TV. On the positive side...the technician did an OK job wiring the house, the picture is better than Comcast and my monthly bill is less. Negative side...we had the service for 2 days and lost signal due to rain. We thought if this is happening already maybe the service is not what we were led to believe, so we decided to cancel (which is within 15 days by IL statute) and just go back to Comcast. It turns out, since I signed up through a "third party vendor" I ran into at Menard's, per the fine print I was suppose to cancel within the first 24 hours! It was mind boggling talking this through on the phone with the "retention center" rep and that person's supervisor. What was even more disturbing is that the supervisor would not refer me up the chain when I asked to be. Basically I was stonewalled for 45 minutes and received no satisfaction. I called the guy I signed up through and he said "let me make a couple of calls" and of course, no further contact. My loss of protection of 15 days to cancel changing to 1 day because of the Direct TV rep I signed up through sounds unethical and dishonest and I feel lied to. Basically Direct TV changes their contractual wording depending which distribution arm (of many that they use apparently) to minimize their risk due to improper disclosure and unethical conduct from their third party vendors! Smart business I guess....and horrible customer service. Menard's gets a negative in my book as well for allowing this in their store. Direct TV and Menard's both disappoint me in this. Do not use Direct TV if you can help it and beware of their practices. I rent a condo and the condo association informed me that they had a new contract with Direct TV which would provide free HD receivers last month. I turned in my old DVR receiver without issue and the new HD receiver works fine. However, this month I informed that I was moving. They indicated that first it was their policy that they would only send a box to return the receiver 7 days after I canceled the service, which means that either I would have to go without cable or I would have to move it and they would send the box to my new address. I told them to send me the box and I would just go without cable. Also at the end they said that in addition, I owed them a $200 termination fee ($20 per month for early termination). This was because apparently, the receiver I just received came with a 1 year contract. I never signed anything nor was I informed of this and never would have upgraded if I had known. They said they would charge the credit card on file if I did not pay this fee, which I feel is robbery or fraud, as I did not have any communication with them regarding renewing my contract and I paid $100 for the old receiver and the $50 installation fee when I moved in two years ago along with a monthly fee. I would not recommend this company. Direct TV pretends to an alternative to other cable providers but they are just another shady cable company trying to get money for nothing with policies that stick it to their customers. I can deal with the cable going out every time it rains or is particularly windy but don't shake me down. They might want my business again someday but too bad for them and I am letting everyone know about this experience. read more

What a nightmare. The next time a Direct TV salesperson corners me in a store I will have no problem telling them where to go. I was enjoying my Sunday shopping at a Walmart and a Direct TV lady came in for the kill. I had been trying to lower my Comcast bill, so I took the bait and got suckered into switching. Installation day came around and I had proactively cancelled my Comcast service because I was worried that they would try and talk me out of it and then I would end up paying for two services (I am not good at dealing with salespeople). The installation guys came and marched around my house noticeably having problems figuring out how they were going to pull cables though somehow Comcast had figured out how to do it since I have service. After an hour and a half of looking here and there, going into my attic, my laundry room, etc. they determined that I was not able to get Direct TV service because the trees in my yard would block the dish no matter what direction they installed it. WHAT?? Not only that but the person who owed this house before me had a dish, so I know that it could be done. But by this time I was so aggrivated that I was fine cancelling and just crawling back to Comcast on my hands and knees...no problem, right? Wrong. About 10 seconds after they left, they ring my doorbell to tell me that their car wouldn't start and asked if I could give them a jump. I didn't really have an option, so I did and they went on about their way. It was only after they left that I realized that my storm door to my house now won't close all the way, so they must have done something to break it. They also left the access panel to my attic open so I had to go get my ladder back out and close it up. So the idea of switching to save a little bit of money turned out to be a HUGE waste of time and now has been an inconvenience and possibly an expense to me. (I am calling them tomorrow to see what they will do about the door). read more

Direct Tv in general has a horrible customer service experience. There are many risks such as weather(if your service goes out due to weather you are not compensated) and technical(you have to buy service protection to have your equipment covered). Not to mention the long term contract they you must honor even if you move to a place that does not allow a dish. Overall, i can't recommend direct tv to anyone. read more

Horrible! It rains...cable goes out, it's windy...the cable goes out, it snows...the cable goes out, it's sunny ...the cable goes out! Paying for a service they cannot provide is insane. Customer service is a joke even when promised a "manager" would call us back...didn't happen. They wouldn't let us out of our 2 year contract even though the cable would go out continuously. 2 years to the day we canceled service and took our business elsewhere. Poor Customer Service. DVR constant freezing during recordings. Lost programs due to this. Upgraded to Genie to improve programming to stop freezing but did not work. This has been going on for several years with no improvements but increases in rates continue. Requested cancellation and they are going to charge me after 12 years of service with their company a cancellation fee because I am cancelling due to poor service. They can not find why it freezes yet still feel I should continue for the rest of the upgrade period or pay a cancellation fee which I feel is totally absurd and unfair for me as a customer. I DO NOT recommend this company for quality service!!!! Watch out if you try to upgrade you are automatically extended another 2 years no matter what and if your service does not improve you are out of luck they will still nail you with a fee!!! Worst customer service ever! And to top off and add insult to injury the customer service chuckled/snickered thinking it was funny I was so livid on the phone and felt cheated by their company! I have worked in a customer service oriented job all my life and NEVER chuckled or snickered at an irate customer! Ever!! read more

What a joke! Had Direct TV at a condo we own in a high rise - no option. So a tenant wants HD receivers - I call Direct TV and no problem getting her the receivers. I asked about cancelling service or transferring should she rent another unit as our unit was for sale. No problem. Well you guessed it. We sold the unit and tenant moved 10 floors down and wanted to take the same receivers with her as she had paid for them although on my bill. I called and the lady said no problem. Then tenant called and they said no way - the receivers had to be returned and she needed to get new receivers even though there were none available for 2 weeks. I called back to discuss and they said no way to do it. I explained they had told me no problem when I ordered the receivers so why is it a problem now??? Anyway after 3 days and over 4 hours of my time + the tenant's time, I just gave up. They are impossible to deal with. The receivers are there, they work but no I have to have then returned and she has to pay for new receivers even though she paid for them already - After this experience I would never have Direct TV at my house as they tell you one thing when you sign up and another when you try to cancel or change service + very rude customer service reps - I did have one nice person in a total of 10 conversations! read more

Word of caution - if you are going to subscribe to Direct TV.........So, they may have a decent product in regards to value - channel line up compared to price. What you need to be aware of is the hidden costs when you sign up. First of all there maybe a fee if you cancel before your contract is up (many are 2-3 years). Second, they add on charges for HD and other things that if you don't cancel within 30 days or some other designated time period - you'll be forced to pay the additional $15+/month. Then, all of a sudden, the $29.99 per month fee that seemed reasonable is more than $50. Buyer be ware!! read more

Direct Tv has to be the worst company along with verizon. Called to have my cable ,phone, ane internet changed so I went through Verizon. Verzion told me they will give me a package with Direct tv . Waited a month for my service and cancelled comcast. People beware Direct tv shows up and says sorry can do your service here becase a tree is blocking. Well shouldnt you have checked that out before hand , now im left with no service and not to mention a days waisted waiting around. Neither Verizon nor Direct Tv will compensate me Just sorry . I stopping using Direct TV 3 years ago, and decided to give them another try. BIG MISTAKE. I am counting the months, when I can DUMP them again. I do not pay for tv service for me to work on their equipment and software. I expect when I pay for a service to get one. Not have to spend 30-45 min. of my time rebooting and reprograming their equipment, every week. I record a bunch of programs. Go into a different room and the other receiver tells me I have nothing recorded. Spoke to the 2nd level of direct tv about this problem a week ago spent way to much of my time trying to correct their problem. the tech tells me to unplug the modem, then it disconnects the phone and he does call back. after being on the phone for close to an hour. Their customer service just put you thru from one level to another and then the next week you have the same problem . I am looking for a cable company that works for the client and not just screw their clients. read more
