I trusted him with an irreplaceable original painting on canvas. I asked him to stretch it on stretcher bars but he convinced me it would be better to mount and frame it. He said he'd have it done in a week. He proceeded to ruin the painting. Strings were glued to the front of it and there was a huge crease running along the center. He said this never happens. Someone who worked for him admitted it happens all the time. He had the audacity to suggest that he'd discount the frame after destroying the painting. I objected to paying for it, given that the value of the painting exceeded the cost of the frame. Many excuses and a whopping 5 weeks later, the painting was finally framed. My husband went to pick it up and the owner tried to guilt him into paying 50% after agreeing not to charge us. When my husband reminded him of our agreement, he told him never to come back to the store and made him promise not to badmouth him online. While I'm not into badmouthing anyone, I LOVE art and I felt obligated to write this review so that no one else has their painting ruined by this framer, since it apparently happens *often.* Caveat emptor. read more

I worked there... WAY overpriced and HE is the worse framer I have ever met. Equipment has not been maintained for more than 20 years... I couldn't work there. The worst shop set up I have aEVER seen and he yelled at me daily. I have 2 college degrees and now just frame (since 1978 in Laguna Beach Galleries) and here locally (Magnolia Gallery, Larkspur for 15 years while working my corporate job).., Um, I have the experience. Tom Craig is an STONER of a boss. Can't believe he is still in business. Sorry to say. Smelling his hand from shoving it in his butt crack--cutting mats-- really? He asked me if he needed to close the bathroom door while taking a piss or otherwise... I said "Yes I mind n and so do the people in the parking lot that can see you through the entire shop to the parking g lot." I'm sorry. Why do I need to explain this to a 65 yr old man? My Dad (aka "James Dean" - he looks like him in the portrait) was saved by Tom the owner after his portrait fell off my wall and shattered the glass.The frame was made by the artist and my Dad most likely and it fell apart after 20+ years. I called and Tom was able to help me that day. I took the portrait down to him at his shop. I walked in and saw all kinds of cool frames. He went over the options and I chose to have the entire piece re- framed. I wanted plexiglass and we worked together to choose the color of the frame. I left a deposit and Tom said he would call in two weeks. Exactly two weeks later he called to finalize the details and I picked it up the next day. The piece looks fantastic now! Our mother has dementia and she printed some photos on her ink jet and took them into Dimitroff's for $300 worth of framing. When we found out about it the same day, we had our mother's care giver go back to cancel the order and hand them a pre-printed card explaining our mothers condition and the fact that she is not capable of making financial decisions, and warned of penalties associated with an elder abuse conviction. My sister also called the shop and explained the situation. Dimitroff's refused to cancel the order and was angry and abrupt over the phone, complaining that they did not appreciate being accused of elder abuse and how this sweet old lady, who they have known for years should not be denied her wishes. I spoke with the same gentleman on the phone today (presumably the owner (Tom)), and he again refused to cancel the order and told me my mother was fine when he met with her. I asked him if he was trained in diagnosing neurological disorders and again informed him that our mother was clinically diagnosed with dementia and not capable of making financial decisions. I promised him I will be contacting Marin Adult Protective services and filing a complaint. He confirmed it was too late any way and he had her deposit. I did contact Marin Adult Protective Services and they referred me to the County's Attorney General's Consumer Protection Unit, where I have left a message. I understand Dimitroff's (Tom) thinks they are doing the right thing as opposed to something nefarious. I dont even think it is about the money for them, but we need to protect our mother in this very difficult stage in her and her family's life. read more

I went to Dimitroff's to get a quote for an 18x36 custom frame for a painting that I had bought from Taos. I thought I should get a quote first and shop around a little. The owner of the shop (who is Tom, I think) really liked my painting, and after we discussed various options for framing it, I realized there is no point in shopping around. Dimitroff's is the place to have the painting framed. Tom was very nice and very conscientious about my budget. What I really like was that he dissuaded me from getting a dark frame, because the painting is of a peaceful natural scene. Tom thought a dark frame would overwhelm the painting. In the end we chose a champagne color frame, which turned out to be wonderful. It's much nicer than I had imagined it would be, as if the frame was made for my painting. Tom clearly has a lot of experience. He knew what would work, and guided me in the right direction. When I bought the painting in Taos, the artist had framed it in heavy-set dark brown frame, which I didn't like that much. Besides, the frame was too heavy to ship. So I bought the painting without the frame. The artist could learn a few lessons on framing at Dimitroff's. Champagne was the right color for the frame! read more
