Was in town visiting relatives and staying in Watertown. A strange turn of events found me solo on a Saturday night with no idea where to grab a bite. One must sample the local pizza while in town. I think it's an unwritten traveler's rule in some Connecticut guidebook. Dimitri's popped up in the number one local spot according to Yelp. Drove over and walked through the take-out door. Saw a pizza get pulled out of the oven and set on the counter. Cheese was bubbling and the smell confirmed I was in the right space. Placed my order for a mixed topping pizza and an eggplant parm grinder. chatted with the folks behind the counter while I waited. Nice people. Pizza got taken back to my temporary home and it was everything I expected and more. Saved my eggplant parm grinder for lunch on Sunday. Restaurant eggplant usually disappoints but this was actually some of the best I've ever had and I've had lots. It's one of my absolute favorite dishes and I make it at least every other week. There are a lot of pizza spots dotting the landscape. This is one dot on the map that I would revisit. Sadly, I'm back home in California where we have nothing that even comes close to Dimitri's. 1st Timer to Dimitri's Pizza, I ordered a plain, large cheese pie this afternoon. Pizza was ready in 30 minutes, cost me just under $20. I wouldn't say it was typical New Haven style pizza (because there wasn't much char at all), but it was tasty nonetheless. Thin crust, half the slices went down easy for me in my Jeep. I was looking forward to having another pizza from Dmitri's after learning that they switched to New Haven-style pizza. Well that day finally came when we ordered takeout recently, and the entire family absolutely enjoyed it. We ordered a large cheese and a medium mushroom-onion pizza--they totally nailed it, and the pizza stands out in its own right among the crowd of restaurants serving NH-style 'apizza' in CT. They managed to get a nice amount of char on the crust, which was perfectly thin with just the right amount of salt and olive oil. There is a nice interplay between the charred crust and small amounts of oil which are crucial in achieving that New Haven taste, IMHO. They went with a nice simple crushed-tomato sauce which did not overpower the pie. I think I also tasted a sharper blend of cheese in addition to the mozzarella, which produced a nice bold flavor. Tasty! Finally, they nailed the droop factor--also critical in a New Haven-style pie. If you pick a piece up, it should have some serious droop, which can then be properly angled to target your mouth by bending the crust edges; when you bite into it you get a nice firm crust coupled with the soft tomato-y and cheese umami layer. I am getting hungry just writing this review. I honestly could not stop eating the pizza, it was that good. Our entire family gives a hearty two thumbs-up, and we all definitely prefer this new recipe (although I also loved their Greek-style pizzas, but always best to simplify a menu). Without a doubt the WORST pizza ever. I ordered delivery of a pepperoni pizza with extra cheese; see the attached photo. I took a couple of bites and picked up the phone. The owner said it was supposed to be that way but agreed to remake and send out another. The second one wasn't burned but was absolutely the worst pizza I have ever had. Hands-down, my favorite place in Watertown. Since moving here a few years ago, my wife and I have tried a few places, in search of "our place". THIS IS IT. From the first time I tried their pizza at a friends house, I was hooked. We ordered from them about a week later and the pizza was just as good. Consistency is important, you don't want a place that's hit or miss. What sealed the deal for me was when I took my family there for dinner. The restaurant itself is small, but this makes it seem much more personal and cozy. Being a family-owned place, they are really friendly and down to earth people. As far as the food, you really can't go wrong with anything. The salads are great (and large) and the pizza is the best in town. As far as appetizers, I STRONGLY suggest the Country Fries. French fries with melted mozzarella cheese and bacon with ranch for dipping. Out of this world! We eat there or order delivery often. I'm glad we've found our place! read more

Ugh, I almost don't want to do this. Let me start with the good (and my hesitation for giving only 2 stars). My waitress was awesome. She was young and just SO friendly. At first I was a little taken aback, but she treated me as if I was a family member, which actually was kinda funny and made you feel at home. The place seems family run, she kept calling someone in the kitchen "uncle". The decor is nothing fancy, which is perfect for a pizzeria. This is where it turned for the worse. I got the hot turkey sub with a side of fries. My sub was probably on par with what you get at subway, except more expensive, and with less options for toppings. The fries, if you can call them fries. I don't know what went wrong. I don't know if they were left in too long, or ... went bad? (This is why I am not a cook) They were horrible. There was no potato inside this crunchy fried ... stuff. Many of them were like ... I don't even know how to describe it. It looked like freeze dried fries. Maybe it was a bad batch. Maybe some of the other food is excellent. I don't know. But for the price, it was just not good. I will not be returning.
