As we were being seated the owner was trying to guess if we were Chinese or Korean. I told them in my broken mandarin that i speak Cantonese but the owner then broke out his broken English with 'My friend' beginning with every sentence. Then I broke out my Peruvian Spanish that I'm Chinese and my wife is Korean. then the owner with his 'My friend' starting bowing at my wife. All this made me uneasy. So, minus 1 star for that. The decor is definitely there. The Buddhist statutes makes me feel like I'm at a temple or grandma's house. My wife and I ordered the wonton soup, Shrimp with satay sauce, stir-fried chinese vegetable (Shanghai choy) Taiwanese beef stew. We got 2 bowls of white rice. I got an extra bowl because I was hungry and the soup and stew were really salty (spanish twist i think). The owner asked us if we like spicy food and brought out his 'homemade' hot chili oil. I was the dried red pepper chili with sichuan pepper corn, and fresh jalapeno in oil. We shared a tiny pot of tea which was pretty expensive for tea. We had to keep asking them to refill the pot with more hot water as the pot was meant for one person. So, another minus 1 star for giving Asian people limited hot tea in a Chinese restaurant.

We are looking for a restaurant for dinner on May 21, 2018, Monday. Which is a holiday in…read moreBarcelona! Most of the restaurants is not open for business! After we walked to three restaurants not very far from our hotel, but all closed for holiday! We remember we saw Chao Zhou was open the day before on Sunday. So we designed to give them a try. We are very happy to found out they are open for dinner! Later we found out they are not open for lunch time on Sunday and Monday! I don't have a big hope after we tried another Chinese restaurant few days ago in the island city, Tenerife, Spain. We have a table inside the back dinning room section of the restaurant. It is very quiet before a tour bus drop off a lots of customer here. Fortunately, we ordered our foods before the tour bus arrive! We ordered Brine Duck, Stir Fry Water Spinach (tong-choy), Ginger Spring Onion Fried Crab, and a Cantonese Style Claypot Rice with Lap Cheong. Oh boy! They are so delicious! I cannot believe we can found a Chinese restaurant in Spain even better than most of the restaurants in California or some restaurants in Hong Kong! Another good thing about Chao Zhou is their excellent service. Everyone in Chao Zhou is working hard to take care the customer. Yes! I know, it is not very normal for Chinese restaurant! But they did, they have good customer service! Specially, our waitress, Yan ( 燕 ), she is go above and beyond to gave us the best service even when they are supply busy! Good foods and excellent service in a Chinese restaurant! Where you can find this. The answer is Chao Zhou in Barcelona, Spain!

Great alternative to local cuisine. Soothing and light food.read more

Visited Barcelona with a group tour. My tour lead brought us to this Chinese restaurant. We have a…read moregroup of 47 people and the restaurant owner/manager reserved a room at the back of the restaurant for us. First impression, this place is old and outdated. It looks like the place haven't renovated or updated for 30 years. They still have the old tube TV, not even sure if it's working but that's not important. The table cloth has holes on them, it shows that this place is poor maintained and the owner just don't care. The tea has not much leafs in the pot. After one water refill, the tea basically taste like water. The dishes are basically some home make dishes which most Asian moms can make it. Lettuce with oyster sauce, pork with tofu.... they aren't taste bad but c'mon. You don't expect to eat these dishes outside than home. There are 9 dishes and I can probably make 3-4 of them on my own as unskilled home cook. I know this is a group tour meal but I saw other guests outside of the group are eating the same dishes. I don't know the price of these dishes but I noticed they aren't cheap from other reviews. They put a lots of photos of older HK TVB celebrities or other politicians who visited this place. I called them the victims of this place and I doubt they will even come again. To summarized, I know this restaurant is in Barcelona and not Toronto or Vancouver, so there is no expectation on Chinese dishes. Go ONLY if you are extremely craving for Chinese foods in Barcelona, otherwise don't go there.

It has your typical Chinese dinner food, veggie, fish, meat, and soup. If you want something different, they have Peking Duck as well. Of course, they have your standard fried rice and stir fried noodles too. If you're going to other asian places, just keep an open mind as they are slightly more catered to the local taste.
