I've been to Jamaica a couple times and each time fell in love with the cuisine. This is one of the best places I've found outside of Jamaica. The food is fresh, hot, and delicious. The seasoning is completely on point and super authentic (from the knowledge I have, obviously not being Jamaican). The service is perfect. He was super nice and explained everything to me that they had. The location is interesting and parking is hard to find since it's right on the side of the road. The vibe of the place is that of a "hole in the wall". I wouldn't say it's health department clean, but it's also not horribly dirty. Honestly, I wouldn't want it to be another way. If you love Jamaican food you should RUN here!

They were unfortunately out of oxtail and many other menu items, so I chose Brown Beef Stew. Their entrees include 2 sides and plantains. You may also choose a size of small medium or large. I chose medium to be safe. They also have select pastries or beef patties in a case on the counter, so I also snagged a beef patty!! It so flaky and the meat was seasoned beautifully. It was so also pretty big in size! At the moment they are only doing to-go. When I got home and opened my box it was so heavy and stuffed to the brim! But it wasn't beef inside they just put chicken stew inside instead. I didn't really mind, I was thinking maybe it's all they left. Either way, it was so delicious. There was probably half of a small chicken in this box! The leg meat was fall off the bone tender and the spices were classic Jamaican flavor. Absolutely delicious!!! I chose rice and peas and cabbage as my sides. Both just delectable. Their rice and peas is honestly one of the best I've had. Overall, I will definitely be returning but maybe for lunch! I have a feeling they ran out of items early. I would highly recommend trying this place!!!

When it comes to carribean restaurants they are mostly a hit or miss depending on the day or time…read more Especially the Jamaican establishments. From the attitude to the lack of love put into the food. As for the Humming bird it needs help in many ways. The cleanliness is lacking, people should see clean tables and no leftover rice grains on the floor left from previous customers. The greetings and mannerisms are lacking as well. I shouldn't feel like I'm getting into an altercation with the cashier. As for the food it's lacking the love from the beautiful island called JAMAICA . When establishments get comfortable they forget what it took for them to open those doors. The hard nights of labor that open those doors, the love of cooking some amazing food, the introduction of bringing the elements of Jamaica. As for the order was an oxtail with rice and peas, and cabbage. Also an order of curry chicken with same sides as the oxtail. The oxtail wasn't tender enough the seasoning a bit on the salty side. The curry chicken tasted as leftovers from the previous day. Again it starts with the kitchen and owners have to be held responsible to the full extent. Either get it together for Tampa needs carribean restaurants or shut down and reevaluate the love once was that represented Jamaica.

I hate I don't have better things to say about this spot that we were really excited to try. I will…read moresay that upon arrival, everything seemed to be going fine. The owner greeted us at the door, it was fairly empty so there was no wait and we were seated right away. The ambiance is nice. It does look like you've stepped into the VIP area of a restaurant, so it was cute -- not fancy, but cute. The owner then told us about the restaurant being inspired by his mother, they've been around for 10 years, explained the menu etc., it was nice. He also told us that he hadn't been to Jamaica since a kid and that raised an eyebrow -- but we let it go because he wasn't the cook. MIND YOU, I brought my cousin here (who is Jamaican) after seeing decent reviews about it. He brought over our first round of drinks and they were really good. We really enjoyed them. They weren't strong at all, tasted like juice. So I would recommend just getting juice instead of the +$5 to add rum. As we began to order and look at the menu, the prices were really HIGH, but I guess he was going for upscale cuisine -- so we said OK, let's see what this entails. We all ordered the Taste of the Island plater that gave an oxtail, curry goat and jerk chicken, rice and peas, plaintains and a tiny side salad. I wasn't mad at the portions given, but the flavor didn't hit the mark at all. NOW LETS GET INTO THE FOOD The Jerk Chicken was OVERLY spicy; we couldn't even enjoy the flavor. The oxtails were fatty, sweet and BLACK. Not enjoyable at all. The goat was OK, but not very flavorful in my opinion. The beef patties were good, but probably out of a box. The Roti was good and the oxtail dipping sauce was good. The Honey BBQ Wings were pretty good and cooked well. The Mac'n'Cheese -- DO NOT GET THIS. It literally has NO taste and reminded me of the cup mac'n'cheese that you put the powder cheese in. It took so long to bring it out, I guess he kept forgetting about it (they said everything is made to order) -- which, IDK how you make mac'n'cheese to order. Real cooks know, Mac n cheese is NOT a 5-minute made to order meal. He also didn't ask how we enjoyed the meal -- which I felt like he knew what we knew when he saw that not only did the other table leave a plate full of food (the meats) but our plates resembled the same -- he still collected his coin. There is a 20% gratuity that is added on at the end that is ridiculous considering the prices are already so expensive -- MIND YOU, it is not "Elevate Cuisine", its basic Jamaican dishes on Ikea plates. No special plating, no unique sauces or display, no chef's plating or anything. Just a plate of food. Everyone's bill came in over $100. The table nearby us order the same thing and inquired whether or not we liked our food, but we'd just gotten our food and hadn't tried it yet -- we did warn them about the chicken being spicy, but not everything else. They came after us and left before us and left everything on the plate except the rice and peas. I love black owned businesses and I wish this much more success, but I would NOT recommend it to anyone that is looking for authentic Jamaican food.

I placed a takeout order for five different entrees at 4:05 and was told it would be ready in 20-30 minutes. I made a few stops and arrived about 45 minutes later, only to be told the food had not been prepared and would take another 20 minutes. When we were finally called up to pay, the order was completely incorrect. While trying to explain the discrepancies and get everything corrected, we were repeatedly interrupted, which made communication difficult. Thankfully, I had brought the paper where I had written down the entire order in detail. Another woman then told me something I ordered was unavailable, which did not match what I had been told when placing the order. Eventually, a third woman stepped in whose voice I recognized as the person who originally took my order. She immediately understood the issue, assured us it would be corrected, and followed through. I appreciated her stepping in and straightening everything out. Unfortunately, we didn't leave until four minutes before 6 nearly two hours after placing a takeout order that was said to be ready in 20-30 minutes. I was visiting my brother, who lives two hours away, so I tried to make light of the situation. Ordering well in advance may help with the wait, but then you risk the food being cold which is exactly what happened to us. After all that time, we still had to go home and reheat our food. I'm sharing this not to bad mouth the establishment, but to bring awareness to areas that could use improvement. Better communication, attention to order details, and more accurate preparation times would have made this a much better experience. With that said, the food was good, the atmosphere was nice, and the music was vibe. I wouldn't rush back anytime soon, but I would be open to giving them another try in the future.
